This was recorded when Brian O'Donnell of Dublin, was a young street singer, that is why it's sounds so raw. The instrumental was added later for the movie "Veronica Guerin" with Cate Blanchette. It was meant to sound "raw" as it was a death scene in the movie. Do yourself a favor an rent the movie, it truly was a great movie!
Kpex, only one I know of is one that was on youtube several years ago after the movie came out. Then for some unknow reason it was taken down by the person that posted it and this one is now the only one I can find. I've combed record stores, but I'm not very sophisticated in the music business, so I don't know where to look for the original recording. Sorry, as it was a very haunting melody that he sang and who know if he is still alive. The preciousness of the song was his young untrained voice with no background. Just a "street urchin" (as he was called then} that the sound director heard and recorded.
I'm a Brit I'm ashamed today at the moment , it the song and story is brilliant, veronica guerin, u are an inspiration to all, god keep u safe, ,,,drugs kill and anyone who deals in them should get life without parole , were to fucking soft on the monsters , pardon my french xxxx
I remember young Brian he was a great young boxer, he was also in corinthians boxing club at the time, and when the film was released Gerry Hutch brought Brian and his parents to the Premier of Veronica in his Limo, he's still a great singer.
September 24, 2013 A most wonderful song! I love Ireland, the people of Ireland. A wonderful film. A wonderful talent. To Brian, I hope life has changed for the better for you! I hope you have continued with your music!
But a lonely prison wall, I heard a young girl calling Michael they have taken you away, For you stole trevelyn's corn So the young might see the morn, Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay Low lie, The Fields Of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly Our love was on the wing We had dreams and songs to sing, Its so lonely round the Fields of Athenry By a lonely prison wall I heard a young man calling 'Nothing matters Mary, when you're free' Against the famine and the crown, I rebelled, they brought me down Now its lonely round the Fields of Athenry By a lonely harbour wall She watched the last star falling As the prison ship sailed out against the sky Sure she'll live in hope and pray For her love in Botney Bay Its so lonely round the Fields Of Athenry
So emotive in the movie this moves me to tears when watching. What a waste of a great journalist and campaigner against scumbag John Gilligan and his cohorts.Rest in Peace Veronica 🙏
+Matthew Morrissey What the fuck is wrong with you? You must have shit for brains. I Would advise you to keep those sick opinions to yourself. IF you said something like that in decent company, you'll et your head handed to you.
Only just watched veronica geurien and wow I just had to come to UA-cam to find comments on this song. Amazing. So memorable - you just need to know more about this song once you've heard it. Brian wherever you are, that's kudos to you young man.
Actually, she was trying to prevent drug distribution in Dublin, which was in contact with children as young as 12. Don't think someone with no soul would bother to risk her life to do that. What Veronica did was inspirational, it was so unfortunate that she had to pay the ultimate price. And because of her, the Criminal Assets Bureau was established in her honour which is used to recover the proceeds of organised crime. She wasn't just a journalist. Rant over. RIP Veronica Guerin!
By a lonely prison wall I heard a young man calling "Nothing matters Mary when your free" Against the famine and the crown I rebelled, they brought me down Now you must raise our child with dignity Low, lie the Fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free bird fly Our love was on the wing We had dreams and songs to sing It's so lonely, round the Fields Of Athenry Such a sad meaning behind this song 🇮🇪
i actually no the boy who sang this song but hes no longer a boy :) WELL DONE BRAIN O'DONNEL :D amazing voice buddy and F**K anyone who tries putting you down !! this is proper music from the heart of ireland and shes the qualitys are country has !! TIOCFAIGH AR LA !!!!
the young boy was Brian Odonnell he is now 26 i think he's married and has 5 kids he lives in blanchardstown Dublin and yes he is a member of the traveller community
Absolutely taken by this song - and in particular this version. Sickening to think how us English treated the Irish - amongst others. Brian's haunting vocal compliments Pete St. John's moving lyrics.
Gregson-Williams heard young O'Donnell singing for money on the streets of Dublin and subsequently sent a friend of his brother Rupert's to go back to Dublin and record this lad's unnatural talent. Gregson-Williams's music surrounds and envelops O'Donnell's lisping voice, giving it depth and strength, and the inclusion of a choir gives it a moving, almost epic feel.

Where once we watched the free birds fly (hay baby let the free birds fly) Our love was on the wing (sinn fein) We had dreams and song to sing (IRA) Few details missing
Beautiful, emotional, and inspiring. I had heard that Brian O'Donnell was a boy singing for coin on the streets of Ireland as the crew was filming and Harry Gregson-Williams recorded him in a back alley without any background music. The boy did an amazing job. Ten thumbs up!
i was 15 years old living in the DR when this beautiful song came out from the ending of the movie it took me years and years to finally find it i didnt know the mame of the movie or the song
Brian takes singing to a whole other level!! I just listened to Sinatra and he was a class of his own - but Brian my boy, this is of Jungian character...
Haunting and how well it was used in veronica guerin. Even Cate Blanchett knew that song perfected the scene. Veronica probably had her own fair well song. But I think this version of a fantastic tune would have been very fitting. I hope I dont do her family a disjustice by saying this
I love this version, the kids a fair singer! I think it's him I remember singing in town. He must be in his 20's by now, wonder where he is/what he's doing
@JKProOnPlayStation : i havent seen him in a good while, but in the early 2000's he was around dublin town every weekend, before he performed the song for the film i used to stand and listen for a while, he looks as he sounds lol, small poor rough looking kid, trying to make a few bob. wonder what hes doing
Does anyone know where I can locate a video of Brian singing this song or at least a photo of him? Also, how old was he when this song was recorded? I always get such a terrible headache after listening to this song from crying so much. His voice is just so pure and innocent.
What's your point fella? I personally think its a very good version and well done to the kid No before anybody asks I am not Irish I am British, have no interests in the politics of this song or between the Brits and Irish. I simply like the music and thats it. Shame that more people can't watch these videos to simply enjoy them rather than argue constantly.
Goosebumps watching that movie when this came on... especially when the choir comes in. R.I.P. Veronica Guerin
Choir ruined it for me, but I hear you with the goosbumps
Brings tears to me eyes hearing this...
I actually sang that song back in 2001
Veronica gueerin rip
I was born in England
When I moved to Ireland
I was called a British pig
Still sticks with me
I wish I’d been given a chance

Is there a version without the instrumental and just him singing?

This is the best version of this song I've heard by far. Such an amazing voice. It gives me goosebumps!

A most wonderful song! I love Ireland, the people of Ireland. A wonderful film. A wonderful talent. To Brian, I hope life has changed for the better for you! I hope you have continued with your music!
He did not
so innocent and so naive and so pure, this voice is so powerful, god bless
Very emotional part of the movie when this song was played! :'-(
But a lonely prison wall,
I heard a young girl calling
Michael they have taken you away,
For you stole trevelyn's corn
So the young might see the morn,
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay
Low lie, The Fields Of Athenry

As the prison ship sailed out against the sky

As a Belfast loyalist....I have always liked this song, especially this version with the young lad singing it...
No one cares. You're still no better than the Nazis.
So emotive in the movie this moves me to tears when watching. What a waste of a great journalist and campaigner against scumbag John Gilligan and his cohorts.Rest in Peace Veronica 🙏

Harry Gregson-Williams, you're a legend!
