Sola Scriptura is that Scripture alone is infallible (final authority for faith and practice), so that alone we can trust. What can we know about doctrine? Comes from Scripture. What are held accountable to? Scripture. Scripture is the foundation of the Christian faith, it's where we find the source of truth, it all comes down to Scripture.

@Thinking-Biblically the part where a church was quite literally functioning and propagating the gospel under the new covenant before even one word of the New Testament was written. The part where the understanding of New Testament was the blood and body of Christ, before there was again, even one word of New Testament scripture to uphold it. The old Testament prophecies and points to but in no way describes the doctrine that we as Christians live under. 20 years between Pentecost and the first book of the new Testament even being written, let alone available to mostly anyone within the community of believers. So who was running the ball in those decades before there even existed a Canon of new Testament scripture? Ah yes, a church was.

My contention is simply this. Even if Jesus and the Apostles promoted tradition, it would be asinine to believe that the traditions that they passed on would contradict their writings. That would make them hypocritical and we would have no infallible source to trust. So the best source we have is what is written and based on what is written we can surmise what the traditions that the Apostles and/or Jesus would have passed on. The scripture is the only thing referred to as God-breathed.

These traditions or beliefs can be valuable, but I think there is a big difference between looking at what the very early church fathers said compared to what a church father said 1500 years later that isn't confirmed by scripture or early church writings or that even contradicts early church writings or scripture. For example, neither in the bible nor in the early church fathers, lets say before 250 AD, they were not praying to Mary nor elevating her closer and closer to divinity. Let's break down how bad your argument is. First, we have the historical fact that the Jews were able to recognize Scripture without an infallible Magisterium. Secondly, that Rome didn't infallibly define her own canon until 1546. These two things combined completely shred your argument.
Unless of course your arguing for us to become Orthodox Jews or something but that would involve a consistency I've never seen from a Catholic apologist. Arguments aren't crafted but picked to achieve a pre-determined end. Don't worry about consistency.
But then you assume that the church of today has the same authority as the church that recognized what was Scripture so many centuries ago. OK. Well, we can see that Rome has diverged from traditional Catholicism, let alone all its heretical divergences from Scripture. So if that's the case, you establish so much.

James White pretending he knows what other Catholics actually believe, lol that’s rich. Richer still when he claims that even priests don’t believe it… He’s atrociously wrong on that front. And unfortunately he has his own set of “de fide” beliefs, such as double predestination. In other words, God condemns some to hell before they’ve ever had the chance to be born and live on earth. Please don’t get it twisted folks, White isn’t just “another Protestant” he’s a Calvinist as well. And Protestantism is built on the spirit of division, and not of unity. What most of you miss the mark on is that Jesus did NOT leave a set of scriptures behind, as did Moses. Moses did indeed write down scripture for the people of God. But this is why we know in the NT there were disagreements among the Jews about the afterlife or even the cannon of scripture, some believing that scripture only consisted of the Torah, the mosaic books. Christ went a different direction and left behind a Church, with his authority to discern his teachings and share His Gospel and Grace to the world. And inevitably, the question that Protestantism can’t answer (and certainly not James White), is who or what had the final say as to what is the cannon of scripture. Anyone who knows even some of the history of how the Bible came to be, knows there was much discussion on the matter. And it’s cute to say “Holy Spirit guided me to the Truth.” But again, the spirit of division is so awesome in Protestantism that it cannot conclusively agree on who is ultimately correct, and who has correctly discerned what Holy Spirit is communicating, even apparently that “same” Holy Spirit has told each individual leader of a denomination, a uniquely different answer. There are no real answers to behold apparently, because each individual has the ability to discern “correctly” even when the answers are never in agreement.

The rock is Jesus, not Peter. Eph 5:23 NKJV -
23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.
I came from a roman Catholic background in Northern Ireland and was taught from an early age that the roman Catholic Church was the only true church. It wasn't until I started to read God's word for myself that I discovered so many problems with the interpretation that Rome puts on scripture. I was never encouraged to read God's word. All I had to do was accept the churches authority on matters of Doctrine. I remember as a young boy my brother and I used to go to midnight Mass at Christmas time. In those days, the mass was said in latin. I said to my brother I don't understand a word that man was saying, but he's the man of God, so I just blindly accepted it as the truth with no actual reference to what the word of God actually says in a language that I could understand. I now go to a reformed baptist church where the emphasis is put on the word of God, and you are taught in a language that you understand. I must say I have no bitterness towards roman Catholic people after all most of my family are roman catholics. But I do have a serious problem with some of the teachings of the roman Catholic Church. I remember talking to a young roman Catholic man one day, and he was quite adamant that the pope was the head of the church. I pointed him to Eph 5:23, and his response was, well obviously the bible is wrong then." I find that very sad. My prayer is that Catholic people will have a greater desire to read and search the bible for themselves because it is the only source of truth. We must take the attitude that the Bereans did in the apostle Paul’s time, Acts 17:11 - Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. True Christianity is based on what the word of God says not the word of man.

  • @GizmoFromPizmo
    @GizmoFromPizmo Рік тому

Jesus had a problem with the traditions trumping the word of God. I used to be a member of a church that traditionally takes the Lord's Supper every Sunday but that's not anything that's in contradiction with the written word of God. There's nothing wrong with keeping a tradition of faith and obedience to the word of God and, in fact, it is desirable.
Jesus said, "Call no man your father upon the earth, for one is your Father, which is in heaven." He's speaking about religious titles in this context and not about your daddy. A tradition that would be in conflict with that commandment would be an example of something Jesus would object to.
2 John 9 - Whosoever transgresseth (i.e. goes beyond) and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ hath not God. He that abideth by the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
So, as long as the tradition does not violate prior revelation (all scripture is given by inspiration of God, don't forget) then there's nothing wrong with it.

Once again, James's expertise in Straw Man creation comes to the forefront. Newsflash: this is a human problem. There is no evidence to support this, and in fact the very premise of this argument undermines Protestantism as a whole.
Comparing Roman Catholic laity to educated Protestants is, by definition, a Straw Man. And the argument here undoes itself -- if Protestants were naturally better at studying Holy Scripture than were Catholics, then there would be some sort of consensus among Protestants regarding theological basics. I think the protestant laity know their scriptures better than the Catholic laity do. I live in India. Once, I shifted to new place and was not aware where I can find a church that agrees with the same core doctrines as I do, so I went to a nearby Catholic church in the first week. To my surprise, only a very few of those in congregation carried their Bibles. I barely got any need to open up my Bible & refer. I had a friendly debate with a young catholic of my age after the service was over. What I observed from my Catholic friends was that they rarely open up their Bibles to read it for themselves. I don't know if it's because I never got to encounter a devout Catholic in my life or Catholics are by & large like that. But to give credit where it's due, I think Catholic laity are more familiar with the church history than the protestant laity.

9 And he said to them: Well do you make void the commandment of God, that you may keep your own tradition.
10 For Moses said: Honour thy father and thy mother; and He that shall curse father or mother, dying let him die.
11 But you say: If a man shall say to his father or mother, Corban, (which is a gift,) whatsoever is from me, shall profit thee.

15 There is nothing from without a man that entering into him, can defile him. But the things which come from a man, those are they that defile a man.

In every conceivable way possible Reformed Theology is completely outside Traditional Christianity. While the basic concept of Sola Scriptura is true Reformed Theology has proven itself incapable of understanding a single thing that is taught in the Bible. Sola Scriptura as a driving concept has its place. Unfortunately, the RCC, and the Orthodox Church, have fallen into their own traps; just not as badly as Reformed Theology did.

Notice, James White rests his entire argument on an apocryphal book (the Mishna) written by those who rejected the divinity of Christ, and reject every book of the new testament, to show that MAYBE the Jewish "magisterium" had the Korban rule in effect in the time of Jesus, 250 years prior.
Jesus condemned a tradition that contradicted the word of God. Amen. Jesus did not say, "The written word of God is all you should appeal to as an authority." Because then Jesus would be commanding his disciples to reject his own words, the oral word of God.
Catholics would agree that any tradition that exists should not be in contradiction with scripture because if it is, it is not the infallible word of God.
The Korban rule was not a matter of the divine oral tradition from Moses because if it was, then Jesus wouldn't condemn the practice. It was, rather, a practice that the elders held to against what was divinely revealed by God.
Sacred Scripture and Sacred tradition, with the living Holy Magisterium, are never in conflict, and they never have been. Any authorities in the Church's past who deviated from the truth of either the Tradition or Scripture are those we call Heretics. Plentiful examples all the way down to the early church.
The Catholic Church does not hold that the Tradition is "Supreme" over the Scripture. It holds that these two can never be in conflict because both are divine revelation that was passed down from the Apostles (or Apostolic men).
James, if you want to test everything by Scripture, you have to have an exact perfect interpretation of the entire Bible, and that would make you infallible. Since you wish to be your own Pope, show me your line of succession that leads back to Peter, then I can take your word for what Jesus is or isn't teaching.
