How do you like the snare sound when it is overtaking everything else in the mix? The double time in st anger is the perfect example. The snare and the cymbals just swallow everything else.

@@icaanul That’s been a problem in every one of their albums since then, too. The drum sounds are atrocious, and the drums are way too loud in the mix.
I like the album...there are a few songs I'm not a fan of but there are some killer tunes on it and some great riffs although not their best song writing. I never really thought the drums sounded bad just different.

As far as the snare drum sound goes, I always thought it was the snare turned off and with the knob on it loosen so much, that it rings as it does. It sounds that way on most songs such as: Some Kind Of Monster, Invisible Kid, My World, Shoot Me Again, The Unnamed Feeling and Purify, as well as All Within My Hands. Even the ending of Frantic sounds like that, with the rest of the songs having the snare turned on and that same ring to it, which I mentioned before.

There is a little more to it than that...as I recall Jason didn't show up to pre-production so yes Bob played Bass to rehearse it. Newsted recorded it I am quite sure of that!
Jason played bass on the recording. It was his last studio appearance with Metallica.

People love to hate on Metallica, I've done it myself, Load and Reload era, but I love those records now.
Some people just don't "get " St Anger.
It's not a happy record, it's not what you'd listen to on a sunny day, with no worries in the world.
When you're going through a shit storm, your world's falling apart, then, listen to St Anger, it makes perfect sense!
It's about indifference, it's about recovery, it's about personal issues, relationships between friends, family falling apart.
It's about the hard side of life, the side no one wants to experience!

Like almost everyone, I’ve always hated the sound of St. Anger. But those songs are fucking killer! And the sort of “re-imagining” they’ve done with live versions of a few of the songs just makes me really appreciate that they’re still a band to this day.
I thought the snare sound would have been effective if it was used on only one or two songs, not a whole album. Or even used in sections of a song to be used as an emphasis effect. Kinda like how Slipnot uses different percussions as an effect. They don't drown a whole song or album with it. They'll use them sparingly for emphasis of a part or section

That's what some of us have tried to say over and over since the release of St Anger. Glad to hear it from someone who is so deeply involved in Metallica's development.
I rewatched Some Kind of Monster recently and the one thing that really struck me was how all their initial ideas for songs (for the St Anger LP) were utter dogshit. It's an interesting contrast to watch Peter Jackson's Get Back doc where you also see The Beatles start sketching out new songs but here you recognize that they're working w something that can be refined/shaped into good songs.
It's the only time sitting in the studio was good for these guys.

You'd think a band as big as they were back then had the leverage to take a hiatus to get their sh!t sorted... almost seems they were under the gun to make an album regardless of where they were at and with no-one steering the ship. Where was management in all this??

It baffles me how many huge band can release a bad album. You can't have people listen to it and tell you it sucks? Even if you don't write anything good you could afford to hire people to help you. It's just greed and laziness. Like let's slap something together in a couple months and make another two million. They have no incentive to work hard when they are already rich.
I always appreciated bob for his dedication to Metallica and I understand the snare it’s like full distortion from everywhere and why ST.Anger wasn’t my favorite album there’s some good songs in it just riffs and I did miss Kirks solos but thanks bob for your dedication and keeping Metallica going miss you bro

I love the production on this record and the drum sound. It was an absolute breath of fresh air from all the triggered drums that EVERY metal band has done or tried to copy since and justice for all came out. It was as close to bare wire as you could possibly get. It's like sitting in an old sweaty jam room with them. The same kind of vibe that they got off of the garage days re-revisited. I think this record and the two load records will grow legs later when a lot of the people get older and understand what they were doing. They took a couple of different turns and most metal heads do not like any kind of change. You can't just keep putting the same record out every year the only two bands that works for is AC/DC and Motorhead. This is just my opinion though.

I liked it in parts, but the whole album, it was a bit too much.
I understand they were going through a lot of tough shit. And I'm glad they survived. But with the talent and status Metallica has, they couldn't find a decent temporary bass player better than Bob Rock? I purchased this album when it came out and wished I hadn't. It was released too soon - needed more work.
They ran out of time for "more work." I believe Time Warner was the label for this record... they already blew past their time limit with them when James was in rehab. When James came back, it was uncharted territory at that point, and the band was burning money. It became an exercise in transparency with the documentary more that it was a real album at that point.
You’re forgetting that Metallica are very stuck up in their ways lol and Jason quit right before production of St. Anger and they didn’t want to waste time to find a new bass player during the middle of recording a new album as it would add way more stress to the situation they were in (good thing they didn’t cuz if they did hire a new bass player it could have possibly caused too much tension between the members and lead to permanent disbandment and/or that new bass player leaving the band)

'I Disappear' is a killer song and vastly under-rated.
It was Metallica very successfully trying to meld what they do with aspects of the current rock sound, which was Limp Biskit and all that stuff.
I wish it would go into the set as a staple instead of crap like 'Cyanide'.

@@metallurgico I've seen every Metallica anything out there. I've seen them multiple times live, toured with ppl who are friends of the band and I'm just an all around fan of the band. Bob Rock takes credit for saving the band. Yet as a fellow band member I know for a fact that he was nothing more than a plant by the record label to make sure they fulfilled their debt obligations. Metallica could have used a break from music, instead this guy comes in and puts them on TV airing their private life for all to see while he gets credit and don't have anything to worry about. Bob Rock is a hack. If you listen to the band's interviews prior to Rock you will see what I'm saying. They will never admit it, because they are owned by the label.

I like the "St. Anger" album, it took a while to come to this conclusion but I did. For one, it's not as compressed as Death Magnetic or Hardwired. It has an amazing "HEAVY" sound and a beefy bass tone. After listening to the album all the way through, the snare sound just becomes part of the mix and I did not find it annoying; I found it added to the "anger" of the album. I like it and what Metallica albums have taught me over the years is to not compare any of them against each other, take each on it's own and enjoy.

It's kinda funny he mentions the Fucking Champs, as IMO AJFA was a big influence on their sound, so in a way it kinda went in a full circle.

There’s a really funny video somewhere on UA-cam I saw years back where a fan meet and greets bringing a snare for Lars to sign, and this topic comes up and Lars makes fun of himself, unlocking this clasp on the snare or whatever that makes it sound way different, and he laughs and says like “Fame and glory, screaming fans!” (unlocks snare) “Misery, disaster, loss of records sales!” 🤪

I’m just so confused as to why Jason would not attend the recording of I Disappear, yet gladly participated in the music video, and performances after that. Yet nobody in the band batted an eye, or asked what was up. I’m glad they finally figured out what was going on later on, but Jesus christ how were they so clueless as to unhappy he was

Why was Kirk not on the record?
Because at the time (early 2000s), Nu Metal dominated the mainstream and most Nu Metal Bands (think Korn) didn't play any guitar solos. Metallica minus Kirk and Bob Rock thought times were changing and solos were a thing of the past. But it turns out that Nu Metal was a fad and solos came back 5 years later. Basically, Kirk's main role is essentially to play guitar solos. St. Anger was a weird and bad record to be honest. Personally I like the Load/Re-Load era including I Disappear (great song) than St. Anger.
He was, he contributed riffs and lyrics for the songs. He did rhythm for every song as well. Like he did for Load and ReLoad. He went back to solos only with a riff here and there during Death Magnetic and stayed that way since.

Also - anyone feel like, where production is concerned, Lars is Bababooey? Justice, St. Anger, etc? Anytime he gets behind the mixing board it ends in disaster. I mean, when they’re setting up the mics or mixing it down later, someone should just pull him aside and ask him to run out for beer. I hold Bob a little bit responsible for the snare. He knows better. Bob may may have been in the Payolas, but he’s got the ears and the production cache. He could have done “yeah yeah, Lars, ‘raw’, I got it” and then just gotten a good drum sound after he went home in the Porsche. Maybe it was morbid curiosity, just to see what he would actually do. Whenever Lars goes into the mixing booth or tries to tamper with anything, they should play a Bababooey song over the monitors. Like ‘The Price Is Right’ loser music, or Carmina Booey. Maybe customize it for Lars.
If you listen to the Slipknot Subliminal versus album it’s a similar type vibe man just raw ugliness and anti metal polished production. There’s definitely something to be said for that when it’s done well. I think the snare has become the lightning rod for peoples disapproval at a record that was a total mould breaker in every respect… it couldn’t possibly BE any more of a departure from the previous three records… I think it’s a pivotal point in their evolution
You may be right, but I have zero interest in Slipknot, there is literally too much music out there and not enough time. I am just getting into The Grateful Dead and Modern Jazz, so bands with turntables and rap style lyrics aren't interest enough for me to check out. Maybe in the futures I will.

As a guy who's been into all types of metal for 30 plus years, I remember a friend told me about St. Anger and said the band is heavy again and I will like it......
To me it is absolutely unbearable and one of the worst albums I've ever heard!! It's ok to like it but I personally don't 💀
i got into metal when this album was coming out. i was 14 at the time and I heard the song on tv for some wrestling PPV. i thought it was great. then i found the rest of their music and it blew st anger out of the water lol. that said, the album is good for what it is. the remastered version of the album is better though, it sounds more digitalized but the snare sound is at least right.
Agreed! I am 50 now and got into metal and Metallica right after And Justice For All was released. There was Megadeth, Testament, Kreator, Exodius and Iron Maiden (to name a few).After the untitled Black album was released I had lost interest in later Metallica albums.

Slipknot is tighter as a band then Metallica will ever be, putting Lars in there would only ruin them. Watch some of Metallica's newer live performances, Lars would never keep up with Slipknot and I say that as a HUGE Metallica fan ... sometimes Lars doesn't even know what song he is playing ....

In other words, they were using the snare ringing sound to wake them up during the making of a boring and bad album. I imagine one of them will wake up nightly haunted by that snare sound. Or they wake up to the sound of the garbage truck and say, "FUCK! OH FUCK!"
It's not the snare sound itself that is so bad, though it does sound like dogsh*t, it's just the fact that it's way too loud in the mix and drowns the other instruments out. As a lifelong musician, I'll tell you that you can fix that issue even recording for dirt cheap in a garage. It's not rocket science. Muffle that POS snare down! It shouldn't ring like a damn bell lol!

If Jason didn’t play on “I Disappear”, then it sounds like he left the band a lot earlier than I thought. It sounds like there was trouble brewing for a long time and he was out of contact with the band, but he didn’t make it official until it came time to regroup for a new album. I’m sure they all knew it was coming. For him not to show for a recording session, that’s basically like quitting right there. I also think it’s totally passive-aggressive, just to not show up. I know Jason was pissed and he felt creatively repressed, but when you handle it in that way you’re putting it on everyone else to resolve it. Kirk had issues I’m sure with Lars giving a “no solos” edict when that’s the only domain James allows for Kirk. That’s like Kirk saying, “I’ve been listening to a lot of Ministry lately - so for this album Lars, we’re going to use a drum machine.”
Also, Jason’s main issue (the side project issue) was with James, but blowing off a recording session screws the whole band. So suddenly Jason not being happy with James puts the whole band in turmoil, and the problem changes from one person being unhappy about a side project to the entire band being held hostage and having their future put in question. I think I know why the song is called ‘I Disappear’ too. That sheds a lot of light on the subject.
I like Jason, and I know there were issues in the band, but I often thought his personality wasn’t loose enough to survive in the band. I know he took a ton of abuse, and maybe he never really got free of the legacy of being “the guy that replaced Cliff”. But he didn’t leave the rest of the guys very much choice. And he knew it was a mistake. It was rough seeing the call come in later saying he wanted to rejoin, and being rejected. And then in interviews going back to “I’d quit all over again if I had the chance” to “I’d join the band again if they called” and “I’d be dead if he didn’t leave”. The article about him keeping his chops up to be ready for “The Call”, it’s sad because you can’t help but read between the lines. Great musician though, Amherst Feb ‘93 was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

Leading up to that there is a quiet mention about Jason having called and saying he wanted to take back his decision and rejoin the band. I’m pretty sure Bob is there and there’s some muttering when it’s mentioned, which then inspires Lars’ rant. The rant was about why they were saying ‘no’ to Jason’s request.
So Bob Rock is to blame for the snare sound not Lars. It all makes sense now.

It seems to me that history is showing that Jason leaving the band was the "beginning of the end", so to speak.
Don't get me wrong, I think Rob is a phenomenal bassist and I know that Metallica is still touring and making craploads of money, but it feels like they're just cashing in on former glory.
Name one "significant" album since Jason left. I mean one that's gone down as a "classic" or otherwise historically significant. There are none. The most that can be said is that St. Anger was "memorable", but it was for all the wrong reasons.

Agreed! I started losing interest in Metallica before Jason left (I love Jason and his playing), and there was and is too much other genres, music, bands and albums competing for my time that if I am not impressed on the first listening, it won't get listened to again because I moved on to something else.

Who else can never think of I Disappear without instantly hearing those god-awful, horribly washed out cymbals at the very beginning from fuckin first-gen 112kbps .MP3 compression? Been a Metallica fan since the inception! After the creation of the “Black Album” where do you go??? It was and still is the most incredible/rock/metal album of all time IMO. Yeah wish Metallica would of just took time off vs making St. Anger it’s just not my cup of tea and no one else I know. I guess when you can make a million taking a dump and putting your name on it I’d do it as well. Ha!

There must be some people with ears that are more sensitive to that snare sound. It didn't bother me at all.
Anyone who doesn't like the snare on St. Anger have probably never listened to any metal heavier than thrash. Those type of boingy, obnoxious snare sounds are all over grindcore, powerviolence, noisecore and certain kinds of death metal. Hell, even some Alt Rock/ Alt Metal bands around that time had snares like that, like Placebo, Rammstein, Portishead and Our Lady Peace (*super* ringy snare on their early albums). For some reason (probably because it's Metallica, the most successful band in their genre) nobody ever mentions those ones.
I understand what you are saying and get your point, but I shouldn't have to listen to another band to see how similar the sounds are on a Metallica song. It is like if someone complains about John Mayer's guitar sound in Dead and Company's live music and someone telling them to listen to SRV or Eric Johnson, in my opinion.
@@MrChopsticktech That's fair, I just mean it's likely that someone who finds that snare unpalatable probably hasn't listened to very much metal/punk music.
@@matturner6890 dude i get what you are saying but that really isnt the isssue, yes those artists/bands/genres are abrasive, but for example compare a death metal record to st anger and tell me the st anger snare is a good execution of that sound. I listen to hardcore punk and grindcore and those are well more listenable because of the production, like its not just the st anger snare that's the problem the record is mixed awfully. As a fan of abrasive music, st anger is not it.

All i hear is "Lars said, Lars said, Lars said..." I guess we've spotted the problem. To me the St. Anger sound approach was 1. a failed copy or imitation of the new metal sound, which had no solos either and was defining at this time and 2. a failed attempt to sound unique among these new metal bands. But you simply can not allow this kind of quality level as a producer, sorry Bob. Someone had to tell them: "It sounds like ****!" And it did not happen because of the conflicts going on, is this the message? This band has definitely a persisting issue with production, mixing, mastering on several other albums as well. The reason why many were or are upset about it is that St. Anger was a really good album, but it just sounded like shit. Thats not something to argue about, thats a fact. I never listened to St . Anger. I was still disapointed from when Load came out.
I cannot pass the 2nd song just because of the snare sound.

Lars likes to say F it and blow things up occasionally, despite the negative reaction he knows he’s gonna get.
@@deazl666 That doesn’t mean his decisions aren’t bad. Solos aren’t a key component of music, or even metal music. But to just decide that someone else’s contributions aren’t important is an incredibly selfish and arrogant thing to do.
It’s made so much worse by the fact that of all the members in the group, he’s the only one who’s regressed the most. His drumming was creative, and at the very least fit the tracks, through the 80s and 90s. The guy sounds like he has trouble playing even basic stuff now, and you can hear it in the songs. It sounds like he doesn’t allow them to quantize his playing. Normally that would be a good thing, but for Lars it very much isn’t.
I’d like to see what he’d say if Kirk blurted out “no conventional drums”. Then Bob Rock had to talk Kirk into allowing Lars to see how drums sounded on each track. Then going through each performance and agreeing as a band that they weren’t every single time. Fuck him, and fuck his ego. It’s not eccentric or creative.

That album was an embarrassment ,start to finish.
What happened was terrible, shameless trend chasing.
I try to get through that album but can’t. The snare drum is just too awful. They Shoulda called Vinnie Paul and asked how to get his snare sound. That’s what metal snare should be.
I'll never understand the complaints for the album. Every criticism (minus Kirk's absence) is the most entitled, whiny surface level complaints.
