The Used On 'Heartwork,' Throwback To Their First Three Records and MCR Tour Rumors

Happy birthday (Feb 25) to the captain of the Used, Bert McCracken! To further commemorate this day of excitement and double-lividness, the mighty Gunz got down with the singer in the lobby of NYC's Gramercy Theater. The band were out on some dates prior to the release of their fifth album, Heartwork.
"We wanted to make a record that sounded like a throwback to the first three records," McCracken tells Gunz. "We had the most fun in the studio from 2002 to 2006. So we wanted to recreate that." he adds that Heartwork has "the heaviest songs we've ever produced and the poppiest ones we've ever produced."
In this interview, McCracken's positivity and infectious enthusiasm is in top form. He discusses the direct connections between his love of literature and how making music feeds into that.
But now more than ever, positivity is the key motivating factor in Used World 2020. From the special guests on the album all the way to McCracken's daughter asking him to change some lyrics, there are definitely sparks of joy flying. It's definitely a far cry from the darkness exuded on the Used's previous album, 2017's The Canyon. "This new record couldn't be forced into the negative space that we occupied in the past."
Gunz is quick to remind McCracken about Used shows he witnessed early on where the band may have developed a particular reputation. Some of that patented McCracken snark does come out when Gunz asks the singer the Used will be touring with this year. No spoilers from us, dude: Gunz sets it up for Bert to make the lay-up.
The important thing here is that Gunz had a moment with a scene personality that's had his own personal and artistic ups and downs.
"There's this urgency to feel things in a real way again," says the singer. "People want to feel like little kids at shows. I see more people putting their phones away. Totally cool."
"Even on our bad days, there's a fire burning."

@wormgermz it is just a rumor, but they start to act weard to each others after gerard went to rehab. There are plenty of songs from the used in which bert make fool of gerard or mcr, like pretty handsome awark is for him, the lyrics in 1984 or Take it Away.... but Bert is an horrible person. The throw branden and quinn out of the band, he dodged question about quinn's leavjng and a year after quinn and Brander had a podcast in wich they told us that they were knocked out unfairly..... and now he just want some visibility for the used bcs their last albums (without quinn as songwriter) are shitty

From what I’ve gathered, Gerard Way (from MCR) got sober, but Bert didn’t. That caused some tension or something, and in 2005 (iirc) The Used or Bert held up a sign (or Bert had a megaphone) on a MCR concert to not go to their shows. The Used also added their recording of ”Under Pressure” to an album, even if they had come to an agreement to not use it for profit. Later, MCR and The Used each made a song referencing each other. Supposedly, it was only Bert and Gerard who had a falling out, and the other members were still friends.
It’s difficult to fact check all of this, so take it with a grain of salt.
However, I’ve seen rumors of them being friends again, which could be true based on this interview.

I've been listening since I was a child and Heartwork is the best album of 2020. Every song on it was amazing. Underrated like imaginary enemy.

If the whole album is as good as the two songs released so far off of it then it's gonna be a frickin great album
I love what bert said about every album of theirs taking at least a year or so of reflection to REALLY hit listeners. I know that definitely has been the case for me for at least the past several releases and actually I grow to love each and every album of theirs even more as time goes on

I'm so stoked for the used come back! I became a fan after canyons dropped. So I guess I'm a newer fan but I'm so excited to be in the moment when the album drops and really get into it and find all the hidden gems :)))

Heartwork is their best album since Artwork in terms of accessibility and songwriting. The Canyon is a fantastic piece of art but Bert has always stated that it was made because of his personal reasons so it wasn’t an album that was necessarily meant to be easy listening.
They definitely teased the MCR tour super hard

The interviewer is so clearly bullshitting his way through this interview it’s so uncomfortable to watch, and also really disrespectful to the artist he’s interviewing by mindlessly agreeing to shit he doesn’t know about. If I were an artist being interviewed by him I’d be fully annoyed for its entirety.

Why would they use the title “Heartwork”? Not original and the dudes who invented it (UK band Carcass) did a lot for heavy and dark music who found beauty in death and the macabre. I’m just a random fan of music but I lost a lot of respect for them after seeing that.
I figured it was a throw back to their artwork album. And kinda the evolution of them and their music idk. I think no offense but ur just trying to find a reason to be upset. The used has always referenced other artists, style, lyrics, books. Just as any other artist would. Art doesnt have to be completly mind bogglingly original for it to come from a good place! :))
Stella I doubt Bert likes Carcass. Heartwork is a clever play on words but Used fans are now going to think Bert came up with it. I think no offense you’re a super fan who will defend anything they do and that’s lame. I’d like to see what you’ve created since you know about “art”.

@@briandesmond9003 I'm not a super fan of whatever, I listen to them occasionally. So many other artists use references in their album art, titles, and lyrics. Are u pressed that bert used the phrase "kiss kiss Molly's lips" which is pulled directly from nirvana? If not why. What's the difference? People who have never heard nirvana are gonna think bert came up with it
