Firstly thank for doing justice to the best left fullback of all time. One cannot compare to Roberto Carlos his the perfect example for coaches to teach their players of the perfect fullback. Defensely sound and smart in joining the attack. Flawless

in 1998 real madrid reberto carlos was like cr7 in atk and a full back. teams were baffled as to why a full back has the most shots on target against them. he was a one man offence. he cud penetrate lines easily with his movement off the ball and he cud punish teams with low defensive lines with his shots from out side the box you had to close him down and open your defense or he wil shoot. He is one of reasons real madrid won all those titles in the 90s

Then he left Thierry Henry alone to score the classification gol against the best Brasil Selection of all time... in his defense Ronaldinho doesn't show for the game and Ronaldo against France is a Bronze player, meanwhile Zidane agains Brasil is the GOAT... Sad year to us brazilians....

Some fun facts relating this position to the history of Brazilian football:
The way Roberto Carlos played, helping in the attack, it wasn't revolutionary in Brazil. I remember discovering in the 90s that English full-backs were like defenders on the side, who didn't advance, and I was surprised by the difference.
But in Brazil, full-backs do not have this name, the position is called "lateral" - it's about the side of the field, without words about being back or moving forward. Despite the "lateral" being part of the defensive starting line, helping the attack was just the traditional way of playing.
Until the 80s, when football was less physical than today, there were skilled players in this position. An example was Júnior, Brazil's left back in the '82 World Cup. He ended his career playing as number 10 (since he was a skillful player but no longer had the physicality of his youth).
As Brazil was unable to win the World Cup with Zico and company's generation of the 1980s, the new idea was to abolish what was called "art football" and adopt the so-called "football of results". It worked in 1994, when Brazil won the World Cup. But it started in 1990, when Brazil played in a style trying to imitate European football, playing for the first time with 3 defenders and wingers, which were part of the midfield line. Of the 24 teams that played in the 1990 World Cup, 19 played with three defenders.
It was a huge controversy, because no team played like that in Brazil. It was also the first time that Brazil played in a World Cup with a majority of players who moved to Europe. A time of transition and identity crisis. In 1990 Brazil was eliminated in the round of 16.
What happened with Roberto Carlos' case, a full-back helping the attack, is that the 1990s was the time when the best South American players started moving to Europe. So European football became more exposed to this type of player (Roberto Carlos moved to Europe in 1995).
The best I saw was Leandro (he played for the Braziian team in the '82 World Cup), who played on the right and was much better than Cafu, for example. But he is not known in Europe because he was playing in Brazilian league in the 1980s.

Nice video but I think you should mention one more goal. I don't really remember against who he scored it but Roberto Carlos scored goal from almost 0 angle while running. I mean he scored many amazing goals he's for sure one of my favorite players overall.

I know that's a controversial take but i can't stand Roberto Carlos, never could, i blame him for ruining the fullback position, they used to be a mix of defending and attacking, after Roberto Carlos they all became poor men wingers who barely even know to defend and are only judged on dribbling and assisting... I hate moder fullbacks (sorry, "wingbacks"...) so much and how overrated they are.
