How to Tell Your Parents You're Not Going to University

  • Why am I talking about Skilled Trades? Because a bunch of friends of mine are having an incredibly hard time telling their parents they don’t want to go to university. Despite the good pay, great career opportunities, and a desperate need for skilled trades workers right now, a lot of parents are incredibly resistant to the idea. When did trades become a non-starter for parents? Where did the stigma come from? How do we change it?
I talk to two siblings facing this problem right now. Tamrin, who enrolled in university to study a subject she doesn’t like because her parents insisted and her younger brother Neyamul, who had to campaign for months and enlist the help of a respected professional to finally convince his parents to allow him to study HVAC at a technical college.
And being funnelled directly into university is costing some students a lot of time and money. 47 percent of skilled trades students have already attended another post-secondary institution. So, what used to be four years of tertiary education is now quickly becoming 5,6,7 years.
It’s a shame because there are so many skilled trades jobs out there right now, and with about 700,000 tradespeople set to retire by 2030, there’s going to be a lot more. Canada’s so desperate to fill spots that federal and provincial governments are pouring money into recruitment, training, grants, and apprenticeships.
That means people are often paid to learn. And a lot of these jobs pay well, working their way up to 6 figures. Good unions, pensions, benefits, little-to-no student debt and almost guaranteed employment. It’s all there for the taking. Parents just need to get over the undeserved stigma first.

You're right, a bachelors degree shouldn't be the new high school diploma. Too expensive. Not sustainable for most

3:46 It’s not prestigious, what will the extended family say, they’ll spread nasty rumours behind his back which will take a mental toll/doesn’t count as harassment-harassment against their parents!

My job has nothing to do with my University degree but, if you can afford it, there's nothing wrong with partying and broadening your mind for 4 years.
