Ed and Jim get a lot of questions about the templates they used when drawing X-Men: Grand Design, the PLAIN Janes, and Street Angel Goes to Juvie. They answer those questions and walk through some of their process when it comes to drawing a page of comics.

Years I’ve been casually but loyally watching you guys and the farkin algo only now decides to suggest this? I mean I watch Lee and Finch and Sienkiewicz (Ive even watched most of the Manben eps) and basically anything I can find on process, and only now does YT deem this important episode of Kayfabe worth my attention! Should’ve hit the bloody bell button a long time ago! Thank you for showing this, I would’ve never thought of doing this to save time, and thank you YT for NOTHING! SMH You all should do a Gumroad or something with a package for cartoonists man, I would totally buy that shit. You boys are legends.

It's refreshing to see there are other cartoonists as crazy as I am when it comes to templates and composition theory. Jim, I'm sending everyone that asks me what all the crazy lines are behind my WIP panels to this video now. I use a very similar pattern inspired by the golden ratio. I've also found that I tend to get the same results (though maybe not as precise) when i don't use it too. I think you're right about it just sort of being intrinsic, but I like having it there to nudge me toward a better comp if something isn't working. Ed, I really dig your line template for lettering! Mind blown! I'm definitely adopting that for future comics.
Great show, you guys! A friend of mine just introduced me to the channel and now I'm wondering how the hell I've missed it before now!

Never realized how important grids were until I read Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics". So much thought goes behind page layout, and when done right, the reader won't even notice because they will be lost in the story. Just like how a good editor for film doesn't needlessly draw attention to the editing, unless there's a reason to do so.

I appreciate this kind of process video. When I first started drawing comics to show at conventions around 2015 I still had a very limited understanding of how comics were made... in the past 50 or so years. It was hard to find decent info about how people were integrating digital drawing technology into their workflow. Right now I draw almost entirely digitally, but I’m always looking for ways to simplify the nuts and bolts of laying out a page, lettering etc... so I can focus more energy on the actual drawing and story telling.

This was really helpful and insightful. I'm mostly a writer, but I've been thinking of drawing a full comic at some point, so things like this are incredibly helpful for the learning process.

Incredible video! You guys should make more like this! I love discovering the process of how professionals do their work. I have a simple template for my daily strips and Sunday strips. You guys took took it to a whole other level....MIND..BLOWN. I discovered the MANBEN series a few years ago. Can't believe the amount of work the Japanese cartoonist have to produce each month.

Love this - thank you so much. I hope I remember this when I start my big project.
Can you tell us how you use the last template grid in every piece - right now I only know how to use a "picture" as template layer, is it possible to copy multiple layers?
Or are you just starting every page in the "template document" and safe it seperately later?

What kind of printer scanner do you all use? I don’t have either but now thinking of the time saved and having a cleaner page I definitely would like to plug this into my process.

What do you use for word balloons? Is it a non-digital circle template? Or do you make in the computer?
