    I enjoyed seeing Miss Hokusai. It's got the element of wonder/super natural and it portrays an imperfect artistic life-style/family situation that no Japanese person of the time would have celebrated.
    I find it fascinating that the most uncelebrated people of their time were always the artists, and yet it's not the prissy, fancy, wealthy nobles and their impact on history that we think about when looking back on history. Instead it's the creations of artists that define those periods, who we often think of most often and not any of the wealthy families. As an artist myself I appreciate the irony of who 'proper society' celebrates versus who history celebrates in the end.

    • @PaszerDye
      @PaszerDye 7 років тому +8

      Quite so. Even if the movie has no grand ambition or ending, the personalities of the characters are very much real. Salt of the earth type of folk are everywhere, commonplace in the here and now. But they are also more fondly remembered and looked back upon more than any other.

    • @ouji4927
      @ouji4927 7 років тому +14

      That's not necessarily true tho. The first novel ever written was Lady Murasaki Shikibu's 'The Tales of Genji' which set up the guidelines by which we now consider modern literature by, and even not so modern literature such as Shakespeare.
      When she wrote The Tales of Genji, it had such a huge impact on Japanese society that it was given to girls as a present for coming of age, meaning receiving this was a symbol of a girl achieving womanhood.
      It is good to look for art from underrated sources, but please, do not discredit those who've had the biggest impact, to do so, because you're losing the most important part of this.
      the Heian Era of Japan was one of the only times and places in all of the world's history where the culture was dominated by women, that is something to look into and celebrate, no matter creator's specific backgrounds.

    • @sebakisniesebakisnie6109
      @sebakisniesebakisnie6109 4 роки тому +4

      There's actually been a lot of great artists who came from wealthy families, as usually they could afford resources and education. The 'proper society' norms we know today would come from middle class people.

    • @nickkraw1
      @nickkraw1 2 роки тому +2

      A fine sentiment, but not necessarily true. The incredibly vast majority of history that is studied and remembered is not art history but rather most often the history of war, politics, religion, sociology, and technology. The history of science, art, literature, philosophy, and other specific sub disciplines are more niche. Aside from DaVinci, Michael Angelo, and greats like that, most people are more likely to know about a historical war, geopolitical entity, or technology as characterized by films than anything else in the past.
      That being said, some art endures, which is why the best art can have a great impact and be remembered later. It is a legacy. But so are states, social structures, laws, military victories, theologies, and their consequences. All affect the future.

    In 1995 a friend in Japan sent me the manga "Sarusuberi" by Hinako Sugiura, which this animation is based on.
    The trailer looks very faithful to Suigiura's manga, the animation team here really looks like they followed her vision; I'm sad she didn't see her work come to the big screen (she died quite young and suddenly from cancer in 2005) but am moved to tears that one of my most cherished manga is now an animation with subtitles I can share with non-Japanese speaking friends.

    I've seen this movie, and it's an odd mix of incredibly tender, well written, subtle human relationships and some out of place surrealist scenes that don't contribute much to the plot or discourse - not all of the preternatural elements, just some. Her relationship with her sister is riveting, the animation is lovely, the unpatronising script writing is fantastic - but I was left with this feeling of inconclusiveness, and wondered why I watched it. Worth a one time watch, certainly, for the sake of a very novel premise and the moments when it does shine.

      I know exactly what you mean. as gorgeous and engaging as the movie was, it fizzled out towards end, the supernatural elements did not add much interest, and the plot was a bit disappointing. Even as a semi historical "slice of life" genre, I feel this had the potential to be so much better.

    I only learned of Hokusai for the first time when I visited Japan last November and without expectation ended up visiting the Hokusai Art Exhibition Museum on the very day they were first exhibiting his works. There was a long queue I remember and it looked like a celebration at the same time an exhibition. Entry was pricey but reasonable as this artist was a legend and also being a traveller I didn't mind. I was worried I will be stuck with the whole thing being in Japanese but luckily there were areas where they had English written on them. Not only was it very interactive (for both old and young), but educational and had learnt and felt captivated by the talent of this man, in his own time, in his own environment and even in his own age. He drew thousands and thousands of sketchbooks in his lifetime, capturing that Edo period as vividly as he could, and his love for Mount Fuji is just spectacular. I cannot wait to watch this movie. The world needs to know of him

    The whole idea that you have to experience something before you can make art out of it is very modern thinking. Yeah it certainly helps but throughout the ages some of the greatest works in history are from people who simply speculated.

    I watched this and if i had to rate it, I would give it a B-, It was a good story and the animation was beautiful but I feel like it was trying to do too much but not enough at the same time. For example some fantasy elements were brought up but not explained or fleshed out,
    Then some personal events were brought up but were ignored a few moments later, and just when you think you've gotten a handle on the story, it's over.
    I think if movie had another half an hour to 45 minutes it could've been a great masterpiece but like the master said to his daughter "the work is good but it's always unfinished"
    I fell that statement matches my feelings about this movie.

      I think these stories are not the usual films with the clear endings and solutions for every bit of their problems. Like a real life, some problems are resolved, some mysteries staying un solved, some relationships not developing more. The original manga by late Hinako Sugiura is just like the film, some different episodes about people around Hokusai's daughter and her daily life.

    They did, I watched at Sunset Place in South Miami at AMC 24. It was a well drawn, excellently animated one. I loved the characters, and the story too. The symbolic elements were great, the Dragon coming out of the clouds as she painted the White Dragon Painting in the night. The4 wide scenery shots of the locals in the different seasons, Specially the one in the snow where her blind little sister plays with a boy in the snow was very moving. The wing blowing through and depositing the beautiful flower (Carmenia, I think that was the one, beautiful contrast of the full color flowers with the rest of the colors too) ) that she had given to her before her death. And the painting she does of her sister in the end made me cry so hard, damn it was beautiful .

      You do realise that ghibli has literally more realistic movies than Miss Hokusai, right? Stuff like Only me, Up from poppy hill, Grave of fireflies, The wind rises etc.
      All of them had no magic. Miss Hokusai has magic, it clearly shows depictions from japanese mythology coming to life in the trailer.

    I hope that they show in theaters close to Miami. Otherwise, I have to wait for the DVD or Cable to buy it or see it.

    I only watched the movie bc I heard irino miyu's voice (btw he's my fav seiyuu) in the guy who kissed the girl , plus the animation is pretty and has studio ghibli vibes to it

    If you like this work, please remember the name Hinoko Sugiura.
    if you are seeking alternative paths, this will be a wonderful encounter for you.
    And you will also understand what you Westerners mean when you call Japan's Edo period a "miracle piece".

    El diseño artístico es admirable pero la historia demasiado localista. Eso merma las posibilidades para el mercado internacional.
