    Honestly mate you’ve got away lightly! It’s a pain but could be far worse than a £600 plate. I work in the plate industry and we’ve seen people lose out on hundreds of thousands many times - typically due to scam transactions with fake docs rather than fraudulent purchases. I suppose the only positive is that this was through no fault of your own and you didn’t make a mistake that led to being scammed etc. Hopefully smooth sailing from here on out 🙏

      I don't understand why the DVLA didn't just say. The only way you can keep it is to pay them the amount that should have been paid to them initially by the fraudster who got their payment cancelled. That would have been the smartest response from them and leaving both parties happy.
      Lastly, though from another angle. You were knowingly driving illegally anyway with the number spacing you mentioned. What was wrong with driving it legally spaced anyway? We all know what the reg was trying to say. I'm an older guy, so I don't understand why the younger generation do this to their number plates. If it's an illegal plate, then the car is not insured. So becomes another issue when driving around the streets. Better safe than sorry and drive legally and insured.

    • @mikey_bb
      @mikey_bb 9 місяців тому

      @@obicoke1810 because the DVLA cannot be shown to support fraud - any element of fraud & the reg is revoked 🤷🏽‍♂️ that is the correct course of action to take, as it deals with the fraud in about the most serious way.
      Having an illegally spaced numberplate doesn't invalidate your insurance 🤣 at worst your insurer may refuse to pay out for your claim due to an undisclosed modification (realistically they wouldn't as the plate is still very much legible & that alone wouldn't be sufficient to cancel cover), however they would still pay 3rd party claims as they are legally bound to - that means you have the legal minimum of 3rd party insurance, so you couldn't be prosecuted for no insurance either

    • @K26650
      @K26650 9 місяців тому +2

      @@obicoke1810I'm a younger guy and can't understand why people do it either. Lots of people I know don't technically have valid insurance, Probably why an 'old mans' 2 seater sports car was cheaper to insure for me than a 320d.

    To be honest i'm glad you shared it. Thanks..If the price wasn't a massive amount between the private seller and similar plate from DVLA, then i'd go to the DVLA directly now just for the added security and lack of potential hassle.
    It's good to see enough time has passed since then as well, that you're able to stay composed and smile when talking about it, because regardless of how much money is involved, the thought of potentially being scammed is always going to be enraging in the beginning.

    • @sen5908

      Of course you own it whilst it remains on your car, and while you keep your V5 safe, people only loose them when they sell the car before the removal of the plate online, you need to put the plate on retention in your name, it's people who don't know the system, that's why they loose them, never ever sell your vehicle before you put the plate on retention!

    A further heads up for everyone. The Plate regulations have been relatively recently changed, so I'm expecting a crackdown on the non-compliant ones out there any time soon
    Plates need, to use the official font and size lettering, reflective background with a BS number and makers postcode, correct spacing, black letters (3D letters are now legal but 3D effect ones are not) and a minimum of 11mm of background around the letters (no requirements on shape though so that could be fun)

Anything that’s joined up or miss placed to make a name is pretty worthless. One of my plates had 2 digits very slightly closer together, I got a police letter and a DVLA letter telling me if I didn’t change it the DVLA would confiscate the plate if I didn’t get a BS standard plate, I changed it I don’t need the agro and the plate is worth around 25k-40k. You should take it to the small claims court as I'm sure you'd win the case easily. Also, I find it strange that the DVLA didn't allow you the opportunity to pay for the plate directly from them. Why the need to scrap it completely?.... that's bizarre!

    One of the reasons why I got mine via the DVLA website, in case anything ever happened, there would be proof on their systems that I paid for it etc. This is the problem with 3rd party sites that can arrange the plates for you (which in turn always end up more expensive than just going via the DVLA site directly!). I've never trusted buying a plate from someone, too many scammers and scum around for this sort of thing to take place! Decent video though showing what can and does happen Jamie, just gutting it happened in the first place!

    Good on you Jamie for putting this out there, no matter how streetwise we are, it shows anyone can be scammed. If this stops one person from making the same mistake then you’ve done your job. Legally you do have the right to appeal (regardless of the statement on the letter) and I’m sure a barrister would help you with that, however the cost to do so would far out way the cost of the plate. For DVLA to scrap the plate rather than return it to its original owner would suggest that the plate was never issued in the first place and this is an internal breach rather than external. If it was a a false credit card payment or fake bank transfer then it would have to be returned to the original owner in the same way a car that has been sold on whilst still under finance (without the finance being cleared) means it’s returned to the finance company as the actual owners of the vehicle. Either way you haven’t taken an L you’ve shown the rest of us the pitfalls to avoid and that’s a win in anyone’s book. 👍🇬🇧

    • @mikey_bb
      @mikey_bb 9 місяців тому

      Actually, the registration numbers are all owned by the DVLA - no-one owns their personalized registration number, they merely buy the right to use/display it. This is the most likely reason why they can't return it to the original 'owner' & if there is any fraud element, then it will be revoked. There is no option to appeal the decision as it's been quite clearly investigated as fraud 🤷🏽‍♂️
      The only legal recourse Jamie has is against the person he bought it from, but that could turn out messy/expensive...

    • @stevee8920
      @stevee8920 9 місяців тому

      @@mikey_bb Correct, you are only paying for the right to display the plate on your vehicle or hold the plate on retention, however unless you break the law the DVLA can not legally take that plate from you (by breaking the law however can be as simple as not displaying the plate as it should be, correct spacing etc) people don’t realise that if you have been stopped by the police for your number plate they can report that to the DVLA if you reoffend and it is reported to the DVLA they can revoke the number plate. In this case however none of those applied, Jamie would have needed the necessary documentation, retention certificate etc from the seller for him to be able to register the plate to his vehicle. For the DVLA to then issue a new V5 to Jamie with the GA55 EED for his vehicle, all checks should have been carried out by the DVLA before issuing it, this is not an overnight process and therefore had it been a fake bank transfer or a stolen credit card that purchased the registration prior to Jamie then this would have come to light. For the DVLA to carry out the investigation over a 2 year period and not the Police then this would appear to be an internal issue, any element of fraud would by law result in a Police investigation. A way to dissuade the general public from perusing the matter further though is to state that they have no right to appeal, this however is not fact and should Jamie have wished to contest it a lawyer would be able to challenge the decision in court (the cost to Jamie would far out weigh the cost of the plate, however had it been the number plate F1 for instance, I guarantee it would be challenged and the DVLA would lose as there had been no Police involvement and Jamie had not committed any illegal act enabling the DVLA to revoke the number plate

    • @mikey_bb
      @mikey_bb 9 місяців тому

      @@stevee8920 as I've said, there is no right to appeal 🤷🏽‍♂️ you could try to take them to court but you'd lose...hard. DVLA would revoke the plate F1 too if it had been got via fraudulent means (police involvement or not). The DVLA investigate & have a power to take people to court re enforcement - they don't need the police to be involved.
      The only legal recourse he would have is to take the seller of the right to display the plate to court to get his money back.
