I just spun some yarn for the first time yesterday! So I’m a long way to being ready for the next step but as another commented noted, it’s such a pleasure to watch others spin! My next acquisition will prob be a carder or something since my ultimate goal is to be able to mix & prep my own fibers and colors. I love your channel so I don’t care what you talk about, I love hearing about it all. ☺️
I love your videos. They keep getting better and better. Love seeing how all the different breeds spin up. I'm a Shetlander and really looking forward to seeing how you get on with your Shetland fleece
Thank you Leslie! The Shetland breed is fascinating and the sheep are super attractive , too. The one in this episode is of the ‘kindly’ type. Very bouncy and soft.
I just received this same book from a friend and will plan to read from cover to cover as suggested. Really enjoy you rpodcast. Am trying to go back and watch from the start. So much valuable information. Thank you
Thanks again for a wonderful session, Lisa! I enjoy my morning tea with you, and it inspires me to try things, revisit things, although I have been spinning for about 40 years!
Hi Andrea! I am finding so much to learn about. It’s a lot like knitting. So many techniques and patterns to try out. I bet you could teach me a thing or two about spinning 😉. I’ll never make 40 years of spinning!
I just discovered you today thanks to a recommendation from UA-cam and subscribed after the first 5 minutes. I love your easy going style and your topics are exactly what I'm interested in.
Love your podcast! Just discovered it. I am a self taught spinner who has a Lindrum wheel. Have been considering getting a e-spinner for a little while. There are so many different ones. I do like the natural wood housing for the ashford e-spinner amongst other criteria. I, too, am in love with shetland wool. A few years ago I bought some from a shepherdess at the Black Sheep Gathering here in Oregon. Now I get fiber from her every year. I call it my desert island fiber. If I were on a desert island and could only spin one kind of fiber it would be shetland wool from Joyce's flock. I will look forward to watching your other podcasts. Thank you!
I would have to agree with you. I could and will happily spin Shetland for as long as I can. It’s wonderful to have a relationship with a shepherdess and to have confidence in the quality of the wool. Plus it just feels good to support small producers. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment on my video. Happy spinning ❣️
I am making my way through all your videos - they are so great, on so many levels. Imagine my surprise, when today's choice includes someone from my local guild. I am lucky to be acquainted with Susan and Andrew and in fact, just last weekend, she held a workshop where we all got to try all her combs. So fabulous. She is an awesome teacher and they are very talented makers. 😊
Lisa, Thank you so much for sharing your Ashford E Spinner!! It is very helpful! I love watching all of your videos and I am learning so much!! The Combs are awesome too!! I also want to thank you for leading me to Jen at Whispering Pines Farm!! I am truly enjoying Spinning and Knitting the fiber from her Flock!🐏💗🐏
Thank you for your long videos. I use the time to spin (still on the drop spindle, inchworm-style). I love the different segments, and especially when you read. It was lovely. 💜
Thank you Lisa, your casts just keep getting better and better. I bought a copy of Elsie Davenports book in 1971 so it must have been when it was republished, I don't have it now. In those days I bought every book on spinning I could because I was teaching myself to spin and knew no one else who did. That was after I had assembled my kit set wheel from Ashfords. I also bought a drum carder at the time and still use it and have the original carton it came in.
I wish had discovered spinning much earlier in my life. Spinning would have helped me get through my more difficult periods I think. You are so kind to follow my little channel. 💕
Lisa, As you will see I haven't done much with my Instagram page so I will have to try harder. My Ravelry project page is also not up to date, I guess I am doing and watching others more than recording my own journey.
jenny wren Don’t be hard on yourself. I am really bad about Ravelry. And I don’t even want to talk about my lack of documentation. Spin, knit and take joy and comfort from our craft! 🤗
I have purchased an e-spinner, I have only used it once to ply what I spun on my Ashford traditional wheel. After watching your video, I will have a go at spinning on my electric wheel, I must admit I have felt apprehensive about spinning on it. I am self taught by watching UA-cam videos, so I'm not an expert spinner. I tend not to spin this time of year as I have so many jobs outside to do, watching your video makes me want to pick up my spinning right now. I enjoyed your video, this is the first time I have visited your channel and I look forward to seeing more, thank you
I have only one wheel and that is an Hanson e-spinner > I lpove it a lot > for the mobility and I spin outside a lot > just perfect ... No I do not think it is noisy . I only spin plant - based fibre and silk and sock-yarn ( linen Mix) ...for that it's ideal ...you need so much twist for plant fibre ....e-spinner makes it easy ...I have supported spindles as well ....but I use my Hanson plenty and it was the best buy I ever did ....bought it when I was still in Canada > so happy with it ... But Lisa you're spinning and wool prep. is amazing to watch ...I'm enjoying it .. I'm as well self -taught so any prof. input is beneficial for sure .
Thank you so much for watching. I’ll have to give a Hansen a spin someday. It sounds like it’s the best of its type in the market and has a loyal following. I hope you have a great week 💕.
So soothing to listen to while combing/carding/spinning! I'm glad to see another spinner with a sheep-like pup. :D I have three Bichons that are currently employed as my personal fleece inspectors.
I am especially interested in working from start to finish with the wool I want to spin. I have been gifted alpaca fleeces to work with so I haven't purchased any sheep fleece yet. Not sure of types that are here in Australia other than merino but with the information you have given I will have plenty to search for. Thank you so very very much Lisa
I love your videos Lisa. Been spinning and knitting forever. But I still love watching and listening to your videos. There’s always something new to learn.
Thank you for another wonderful episode! You include so many layers of information, and I always learn something. I also find myself looking up tool manufacturers, spindle makers, dyers, fiber farmers, etc. as I'm watching. You are a wealth of information ❤️
Could you show how you take the yarn off the spindle to put onto a bobbin and then how you ply the yarn from bobbins? Nobody ever shows what you do after spinning on a spindle. Love, love, love watching you spin. Thank you Lisa!
That’s an excellent idea. I’ve had the same question from a few viewers. I will record a short video on this. When I searched for videos in this on you tube I came up short. Thank you for watching!
Another wonderful episode Lisa. I appreciate the variety of interesting and thoughtful content. It’s my go to for Sunday morning tea and knitting. I took lessons to learn basic spinning probably 15 years ago but have not consistently worked in any of the fiber arts until the last year or so. Now I am deeply down the spinning, dyeing, weaving and knitting rabbit holes! Your really providing some great inspiration to hone my spinning skill. I am processing my first fleece - a Jacob- with a to spin it up to weave/knit a Hap shawl. Of course I have lots of fiber I can practice on in the meantime! Definitely look forward to hearing how you find the Davenport Spinning book. May have to add that to my wish list!
Jacob wool is a great choice. You should be able to get the gradient you want for your hap. I would love to hear about your progress on that project. I am really wanting to knit a hap made out of Shetland handspun. It is a rabbit hope indeed but one I was (am) happy to jump in 😀. It’s so nice to know we are keeping company on a Sunday morning ☕️ !
I have the Ashford e spinner 3 and loving it. Also have the Matchless, that wheel also spinns so nice. Before the e spinner I had the Louet Victoria, but we were not a successful pair. What I love of the e spinner is that it is so relaxed, i find it quit silent despite the zooming noise. With the Victoria Iossed my mojo but it is back with the e spinner. Please understand me, the Victoria is a very good wheel , but I could not get used to it. It is all me. Thank you for your podcast.
You mentioned the name of the lazy kate but could you please give me the name once more because I did not quite heard what the name was. Thank you in advance.
I love your podcast. You have such a calming way. I may even try and comb my cormo fleece. I have been putting it off because I don’t want to ruin it..ha ha. I too love akerworks bobbins. I like how you can see through the bobbin as you spin. I have a Hanson electric spinner and I love it. Originally I had a single treadle ash ford traditional which I sold because I couldn’t make it work. Maybe if I had a double treadle, it would have been easier. Be safe
I really enjoyed & learned a lot from your demonstration of the e-spinner. I only have 2 very poor quality spindles that were given to me. I hope to have a Turkish and support spindle soon. After that, my goal is to have an e-spinner. Going with the e-spinner because I have hip and knee issues. I've had good success with the spindles I have. Made some decent yarn from wool and alpaca. Man, is that alpaca a pain!! It has a very short staple (1-1.5 inch). I've spun about 1/4 of a sock worth LOL. My pound of wool is all spun up & just needs it's bath and thwacking before it becomes something knitted. Love your channel ... keep it going!
Thank you Lisa for this wonderful podcast. So packed full of relevant and interesting content for me! My husband is making me my first wool combs (!) and so we have been revisiting your previous video. I love your new mini combs - mine will not be as elegant 🙊but I am looking forward to combing some of the beautiful locks from my mule fleece. The E spinner was interesting - I guess it makes the kind of noise that might be annoying for those (like your sister?) who are in the vicinity but are not actually doing the spinning... I am intrigued to know the reason you wanted to own/use and e-spinner ... (I am a newbie spinner on an Ashford Kiwi). Thanks again for a thoroughly enjoyable video.
How lovely your husband is handy and can make you your combs. And to process your own sheep’s wool, too! I purchased my electric spinner for its speed , lightness , and especially for plying. Also when my ankles are complaining with my treadle wheel.
Thanks I’m just watching your podcasts. I have an Ashford e spinner, but it’s their first one! It’s still going well. It’s a much bigger model, no foot pedal, but still great especially for plying. Thanks for your videos, I’m enjoying them.
I like the E-spinner and am going to investigate. I have a wonderful Elizabeth II signature but have not been using it as it is really two big for my little house and I like to spin while I watch podcasts etc. The E-spinner looks like it would fit my space sooooo much better. Additionally I primarily make socks and from your video looks like that is a great option.
Those two skeins of Jacob's wool are really pretty. They are my favorite colors of wool. I enjoy watching you so much. I will email you and let you know about me a little.
I bought my Ashford E-Spinner 3 in December 2019 and I love it. I was actually using it while watching this! You made a really good point about the ease of achieving thinner fiber diameter with the E-Spinner that I hadn't considered. I'm currently spinning for a 3 ply sock yarn. I also love it for plying. My other wheel is a Schacht Sidekick which I also love.
Hello I bought a new ESP2 from a shop. It came from their show room and was sold to a nice price. I need an e-spinner due to my health not for portability. First looked for all information for the e-spinner and I heard much about noise. Theretrfor I compared your spinner with mine. I noticed that mine got louder from the time I got it and I remembered that I didn´t oil it in the meantime. So I dropped some oil. Instantly it is quiet. I notice only something from the original nylon drive band. That should be changed to a waxed cotton band. I will try out. The louder noise Klock Klock which appears on high speed depends on the spool which has a clearance and should be treated with a feltplate in front of the spool. This information I got from UA-cam. But the effect of a drop of oil is astonishing.
I'm glad you mentioned where you picked up your blouse, I was wondering myself. I just turned 50 last summer so I completely understood your comment. :) My Hansen spinner doesn't make quite that much noise, although I've noticed that it is louder with the Woolee Winder than without it.
Hi Christine.y favorite shop for linen clothes is linenwoman.com The pieces wear really well and last forever. So I see them as kind of investment pieces. It sounds like the Hansen is a superior wheel. Thank you so much for taking the time to say, “hello” 🌸
hi Lisa, just finished watching the podcast as I finished knitting a quick fingerless mitten. As you have probably seen, I also have the ashford e-spinner which I now find myself using more as my main wheel. I tend to have it set at 12-1 or so and use headphones to listen to audiobooks whilst using it. Like any wheel, I have one bobbin that rattles around on it !You have reminded me to hunt out the spinning book that I bought whilst on Orkney a couple of years ago. It shows around 5 breed then tells how to spin the and gives a knitting pattern for each one. Must date back to the 60's maybe. I'll pop it on Insta when I find it. BTW, Love the small combs x
Yes, my e-spinner seems to works comfortably for me in that same range. It sure is fast. I’m going to make an effort to spin more on it. I am loving my little combs, so light and makes just the right amount of top for a quick spindle spin. I hope you’re having a good week 💕.
Hi Gail (that’s my middle name 😊). The e-spinner is so versatile and with those huge bobbins great for art yarn. Are you in Instagram? I’d love to give you a follow and see your yarn!
I have the first Eel Wheel Mini that came out thru a Kickstarter campaign in 2017, I was backer #202, so I was among the first to receive my spinner. It’s really cute! The footprint is no bigger than a paperback book. In fact I secure the spinner to a THICK paperback book to give it some weight and substance. I used it a bit when I first got it and loved it! But I haven’t been back to it. The maker has since upgraded and updated his models (I think he is on #6) my plan is to transport the spinner to our northwoods place as it’s permanent home so that I can choose to use it there when I am in the mood. I also plan to take one of my older wheels up there, too, but I’m sure that won’t happen for a few years.
Laura Wijkowski my husband and I are wanting a place ‘up north’. We are not too far away from retirement. Sounds perfect to have your little wheel up there. I think at this point I prefer my spindles and traditional wheels, but it sure is nice to have options. I am so so lucky to have a variety of wheels and spindles to choose from. Have a great week, Laura!
Thank you for your beautiful podcast, Lisa. I have an e-spinner, The Device. They were made by Abby Franquemont and her husband, but they no longer make them. It is actually my first and so far only wheel; I was only using spindles before this spinner. I have had it several years. I bought it because I knew that within a few years (which has now passed) I would be retiring and my husband and I would be traveling for a few years in our RV, so I was looking for portability and a small size. Though COVID has delayed our leaving in the RV for the moment, we are still planning on departing maybe by the end of the summer, and The Device will be just perfect. I quite like it and so far can make any of the yarns that I want on it. I am not a fancy spinner, so I stick to the basics. I use Akerworks bobbins on it as well and quite like them. Currently I am combing a fleece from my sheep (that I no longer have): a BFLxFinnxCheviot wether. I am spinning it into sweater yarn. Cheers!
Hello Alison. My hubby and I are talking about doing something similar in our retirement. Your e-spinner will be perfect for that. I have an external battery pack for my wheel and will come in handy on the road, too. Thank you for watching!
Thank you for such a great video.... in the future could you make sure that the volume is turned up? I had a really hard time hearing you even with video and laptop sound at 100%.... Really great video, I enjoyed it very much and am delighted to have found your channel.... subscribing.....
Thank you Eve! I just watched your tutorial on using your wheel for the first time. So many good tips and your teaching style is so fun and encouraging.
Great video! I have an Electric Eel Wheel Nano (the smallest e-spinner there is I think lol!), and I also own a regular Ashford Kiwi. Have you tried Woolery.com for a replacement spring? I know they carry a lot of spare parts for wheels and I was able to get a spring for my Kiwi a few months ago when I got a bunch of yarn caught and bent it up .
When putting the fiber in the Diz, do you start more to one side or the other or in the middle of the comb? Love your calm & easy manner, you are a wonderful teacher!!! Now to buy my first spindle!!!!! Thank you so much!!!
Hi Lisa, found your videos and have been catching up. You provide so much information on spinning/fiber and have made me want to get back into spinning. I have a collection of all types of spindles and wanted to ask you about the expert you mentioned on spindles. I would love to get more proficient on spinning with my spindles! In the meantime, I subscribed and will continue catching up on your wonderful videos.
Knitterchic Hi there and thank you! Have you seen Abby Franquemknt’s book, Respect the Spindle? That’s a great resource. For supported spinning I recommend ‘Fleegle Spins Supported’. you can purchase anne copy from The Gossamer Web, on Etsy. www.etsy.com/listing/162352250/fleegle-spins-supported-ebook-with-25. Also, Josefin Waltin has some amazing videos here in UA-cam and an online course too I think. Have fun and I am so happy you are inspired to dust off your spindles!
I love your channel . You give me so much motivation and inspiration. May I ask what breed is that sweet dog (that blends in so a surprisingly with the fiber)? Maybe you would like to introduce Him/Her next time? Just a thought... any case I'm a novice to the fiber world and always looking forward to the next episode in your channel. 💝💝💝💝
I’m watching you spin and have a question. When I’m spinning, if I don’t keep my left hand close to the fiber supply triangle I get twist going into the fiber. I have fibromyalgia and get a lot of pain in my fingers and wrist from pulling and tugging on the fiber. There are no fiber spinners anywhere around me, so I’m watching U-Tube and trying to learn. Any suggestions for me? I enjoy your videos very much. Thank you, in advance, for any suggestions you may have.
Make sure your prep is open and fluffy. You may need to draft faster or use a slower spinning spindle or ratio. It may be the twist is moving into the fiber too soon and locking up the wool. It’s difficult to diagnose the problem and I am by no means an expert. I’d check out a few UA-camrs to watch. Jillian Eve, Rachel from wool n spinning and Josefin Waltin are all good ones to start. I also made a drop spinning tutorial a while back. Good luck and I hope you find a comfortable way to spin. It should not be painful.
i've been spinning with the hansen craft espinner for the last 7 years... and i absolutely love it. it's nice and quiet and can go super fast. i have a louetS10 but never use it. i find i can spin tons of fibre in a shorter period of time with the espinner.... when you have a ton of fleece i find being able to spin huge amounts of fibre is so much more convenient with an espinner. if i want a quieter, slower, more mindful spin, i normally use one of my drop spindles. i do have a question for you, how do you count your yardage of spun yarn? have you tried any of those gadgets out there that counts it for you when you're skeining the yarn? i'm very tempted to try one of them. happy spinning. xo
I have heard such good things about the Hansen. It’s a very beautiful wheel and it sounds like it is quieter than my Ashford. It is amazing how much faster I can spin on the e-spinner though. In regard to you yardage counter question. I do not have any special gadget. I wish I did. When I want to count I lay the hank out and measure the length and count the strands. But in all honesty I do not usually count my yardage (gasp!). I do weigh it though and can get an estimate. Do you have any easy method?
@@SoulfulSpinning i count yardage the same way, measure and then count the strands... such a time sucker though. i've been looking into a skein winder with a yardage counter to make things easier. thanks for a fantastic podcast... you're one of the few spinning podcasts i love to watch.
Breeds vary so much. Fine wool breeds tend to have a shorter staple length but it is not a direct correlation. If you have library nearby, I highly recommend you checking out, 'The Fleece and Fiber Source Book', for tons of information and various breeds. Or check out this website for an over view of the categories. www.sheep101.info/201/breedselection.htm "Fine-wool sheep grow wool fibers with the smallest fiber diameter (usually less than 22 microns). Their fleeces tend to be shorter in length and contain the most lanolin (wool wax or grease). " Thanks for watching!
How heavy is your spindle? I find a heavy spindle is great for thicker singles. You might try a very lightweight rim weighted spindle so you get lots of twist very fast. Do you spin thin on a wheel but not a spindle? Draft very fast and watch your drafting triangle, draft out fewer fibers, you’ll get thinner yarn. Happy spinning!
@@SoulfulSpinning I made my own Spindle out of a dowle and a cutting wheel for a grinder. The spindle is pretty heavy but I noticed the type of fiber makes a difference. I am so used to using my spinning wheel and I forgot how to use a drop spindle! :) I am honestly not very fast with my drafting, my spinning wheel has a slower ratio.
It's funny that I spend so much time spinning myself, but I still like to watch other people spin too!

lovin' your video's lisa, lovin' that you relish wooly fibres as much as me, everyone else thinks i'm odd, but clearly, you get it too! ❤

2020 had been crazy indeed! Hopefully 2021 will be better. Thank you for watching 😊.
Be safe
Lisa, I love your channel. Your episodes are always packed with great information. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much, Chris!
Wow! While pound of wool on your spindles is quite an a accomplishment. You will love an e-spinner! Happy new year to you and happy spinning!
Thanks for watching Caroline. I really enjoy the E-spinner and like you love it for plying!
The e-spinner sounds perfect for you and there are so many good options available out there. Let me know if you get one and what you think!
Always look forward to watch and learn different tips, thanks fiber friend!
Thank you dear friend 💟
Thank you for the tips! I changed to a waxed cotton thread a while back and yes, a drop of oil makes a big difference for most wheels.
Hi Lisa, th Woolery has replacement springs!
Glad to see you use the espinner! I am new to spinning but the espinner 3 is my 1st spinner. I make art yarn on mine!
Hi Gail (that’s my middle name 😊). The e-spinner is so versatile and with those huge bobbins great for art yarn. Are you in Instagram? I’d love to give you a follow and see your yarn!
I love your videos every time!!! ❤️
Thank you so much. I enjoy following your fiber adventures too!
Great video 😃
I was wondering the same thing about your linen wear.
Lovely video! 💕
Thank you Eve! I just watched your tutorial on using your wheel for the first time. So many good tips and your teaching style is so fun and encouraging.
@@SoulfulSpinning Thank you so much! 🥰 I love your style too! I feel like I'm hanging out with my wise friend surrounded by lovely flowers! 💕
So lovely as always. I will look forward to your Shetland episode, having recently acquired two fleeces...oops!
Can’t wait to see your fleeces.
I would love an e spinner but there so expensive. Love your vlogs!
It seems spinning tools have really increases in price over the past years. Thanks for watching! 😃
Have you seen the Electric Eel Nanos?
Thank you Lisa, love the podcast. Can you post the link to Josephine’s channel? Thank you....
Here is her web site. waltin.se/josefinwaltinspinner/
I move back and forth through the top and shorten the amount of draw as I get closer to the end of the top.
@@SoulfulSpinning Thank you!
@@SoulfulSpinning Thank you!
My dog’s name is ‘Peaches’. She is 11 years old this last month. I will give her a formal intro in the next video 🤗.
Looks like my hair when I comb it out 😊
I just enjoy all of your videos I have watched. What type of essential oil do you use for your antistatic spray?
I like lavender and rosemary with a drop of vetiver or holy basil.
Can u explain the washing process?
Yeah I don't think it's noisy at all :P
i've been spinning with the hansen craft espinner for the last 7 years... and i absolutely love it. it's nice and quiet and can go super fast. i have a louetS10 but never use it. i find i can spin tons of fibre in a shorter period of time with the espinner.... when you have a ton of fleece i find being able to spin huge amounts of fibre is so much more convenient with an espinner. if i want a quieter, slower, more mindful spin, i normally use one of my drop spindles. i do have a question for you, how do you count your yardage of spun yarn? have you tried any of those gadgets out there that counts it for you when you're skeining the yarn? i'm very tempted to try one of them. happy spinning.
Hi! How do you write the name of Josephine Valteen ??? Mentionned at the beginning of the podcast for support spinning on you tube..? Thanks!
It is Waltin. Her first is Josefin.
What is the difference between fine fibers and short stapled fibers help please 🙏
Breeds vary so much. Fine wool breeds tend to have a shorter staple length but it is not a direct correlation. If you have library nearby, I highly recommend you checking out, 'The Fleece and Fiber Source Book', for tons of information and various breeds. Or check out this website for an over view of the categories. www.sheep101.info/201/breedselection.htm
"Fine-wool sheep grow wool fibers with the smallest fiber diameter (usually less than 22 microns). Their fleeces tend to be shorter in length and contain the most lanolin (wool wax or grease). "
Thanks for watching!
I haven't seen many of your videos. However, you seem to use all natural colored wool. Do you ever go wild and use COLOR❓🤔
❤🧡💛💚💙💜
If you check out my Handspun Delights episodes you’ll see some art yarn experiments that are pretty colorful. Thanks for watching 🌈
Wich one do you prefer : comb or carder
I enjoy both preps. A pair of mini hand combs are great and pretty easy to use. Hand cards are nice too!
How do you spin so so thin on the drop spindle?? I have fiber with a long staple length but it wants to spin a thick no ply yarn.
