Ryse and Sunset Overdrive are amazing games. They (along with Quantum Break, Dead Rising 3, and Gears of War 4) were the reason to own an Xbox One last gen.
Gears 4 was so bad compared to the original trilogy. A shell of what it was at its peak. Hope the new 1 goes back to brutal warfare with weight to it again
Riddick escape from butcher game released on the OG Xbox. The graphics were mindblowing for the time and still look great even today. Makes we want to play it again on PC in 4k.
Patenting the nemesis system was such a dick move i genuinely will be happy when WB fall off from the gaming world (they're practically aiming for it anyway). Fuck them for that honestly.
The game that was a million years ahead of his time was Metal Gear Solid. MGS got out on PS1 1995. You won't find that kind of AI, stealth, story, gameplay for the next 15 years. Actually, you will on MGS 2. Pioneers of gaming if you ask me.
Why are you always forgeting HALF-LIFE 2 ? It deliver its story without using cinematics or cut scenes or notes around rooms ! No objective indicator and no map ! Yet you are living the story and understand everything ! It is the father off all modern sci-fi shooters with revolutionary story telling!
Yea this dude hates half-life games for some reason…both HL1 and 2 had some revolutionary things in them… HL2’s facial animations and physics are still better than some games that came out in the last 5 years… and he just skips them…
I can't believe you didn't put Driveclub in the list, that game's rain physics and lighting still looks better than today's racing games, it came out in 2014
Jak and Daxter: The precursor legacy was very good too, especially the animations they felt hella fluid for a 2001 game. Was also the first game I ever played, second one was Dynasty Warriors 4.
Shadow of Mordor was good concept but executed poorly, apart from a sound bite and a new resistance it didn't actually mean anything. As for jumping into Tolkiens world, it couldn't be further from it, it hijacked some names and that's about it
ryse son of rome super underrated , idk why people hate it , i really enjoy the combat very brutal satisfying ,ok maybe some execution bit repetitive need add more movement, but still concept really good , man i wish dynasty warrior combat is like that , the fact ryse should be series and focus make more game like that about dynasty , empire ,kingdom every country
Gothic. Definitely Gothic. It was defining game for a whole RPG genre. It took Shenmue systems and made it better. And then Gothic 2, which was just a pure evolution of the first instalment.
Shadow of war and shadow of mordor were the best games they've come out with since the ghost of tsushima. Like They should be the standard at which all games should be Judge by
I have 5 games out of this list & I liked them all Mirror's edge Bioshock Rage Shadow of morder Prince of Persia Sands of Time Out of these I loved Shadow of Mordor the most. Its nemesis system is one thing but I loved the polished gameplay, the combat & the parkour to name a few & the story was excellent.
Mirror’s edge is a such perfect game. I would love to have a sequel or a new game following the same idea and increased by gun fighters or even more focused in fire guns.
Carmac was so far ahead of everyone else. The making of Doom is such a great topic. I forget who in UA-cam but they made a tech presentation of graphics & like 25%of an hour long video was just about id software.
Great list. But IMO, Rage 2 was a much more refined and fun game to play as it introduced the crystallite powers in combat and movement. That really set things apart. Not sure how unique it was though for it's time but it was a significant departure from the first Rage game. Also, thanks for mentioning the combat and stealth system in ME:SoM as all anyone talks about is the nemesis system
Absolutely love Ryse. I heard/read a rumor that it's possible to see Ryse 2 sometime in the future. I wouldn't hold my breath, but they are making Gladiator 2, so who knows? Shadow of Mordor is just an amazing game. So, so good! Shadow of War was disappointing and I didn't even finish it. For me it seemed too loose, the main character's face was weird, the map all over the place... Shadow of the Colossus. What an unforgettable journey! Talk about satisfying battles... I wanted to love Rage, but I couldn't, because I got stuck and didn't care enough to get unstuck. :))) I'm glad Prince of Persia: Sands of Time made the list. I can still remember the credits song. :D Great list.
The thing about Prototype to me that made it seem ahead of its time was the ridiculous number of civilians on the street. AC Unity is the only game I've ever seen that can compare to how busy the city streets were.
Were they a ridiculous amount? Wasn't it similar to GTA? The absolutely crazy thing about prototype were the things we could do in the game, no other game had that kind of insane arsenal.
Ryse son of Rome have so much potential on it that at first I imagine him travelling accross the Roman empire at its height from Carthage to Judea and even reaching far beyond to Persian lands or Africa but nope it's all barbarians from beginning to end but at least they inputted variety on it when you've faced the proto Scottish people who probably built the stone henge. The coliseum gameplay also had potential and was imagining that you'll be facing Elephants, Eurasian and Barbary lions, Aurochs or Tigers but nah. I hope they make a game similar to this (yeah I know the new God of War exists) but I wanted it to be much more realistic but based on myth like fighting a minotaur but it's actually just a really big muscular man with a bull head for a helmet kind of thing.
you forgot "the witcher 3" on how it set a standard towards fantasy RPG's and is unbeatable to this day. The only one I can think of that rivals it is Cyberpunk 2077.
Though sands of time was unique warrior within is the goat, graphics were way ahead and optimisation was off the charts(soo good) the free style combat is still the most unique mechanic ever created better than the nemesis system
I always thought the first metal gear solid on PS1 was pretty ground breaking . The story line, the graphic, and the gameplay for its time set the bar high for others to follow.
Half life 2 was another for me the graphics and physics engine at the time was awesome and Mercenaries with carpet bombing citys like with red faction the destructive environments is something I hope to see more games use.
Ryse was a really good game, people really didnt give much though to it but now we like a similar game year after ryse was released and its god of war.
Ryse son of Rome was awesome game, from ballista shoot to at end, finishers are awesome. For me dont get why such great game dont get attention? Has no bugs, gameplay was smooth, interesting story. For bad things i must say that faces or people that use for finishers are 3-4 people so if you see finisher its some of them. After finish game you can go to coliseum and choose what battle you want to attend. Battle there its awesome, don't remember game like this to make want to try that. Its cheaper so give it try, im not talking to buy 3-ple AAA game, but this its good not perfect not awesome but good game.
This is a fantastic video but I'd make one correction. The developer you called "I.D." software is actually "id software". Id being "the primitive and instinctive component of personality" in psychology.
Ironic isn't it? Shenmue went from game that were ahead of it time to games that behind its time in their latest title called "Shenmue 3". Yu Suzuki is like Todd Howard at this point, Not knowing how gaming industry has advanced. It's not just about graphics, But also gameplay, Story, Mechanic, Core gameplay, Gameplay loop. Arkham Knight? Witcher 3? Witcher 3 inspired games like rdr2, AC odyssey and more. Wasn't that much ahead of it's time but it did set a bar for future games. And do I even have to write about Arkham Knight?
@@Fabohr I mean a few things like growing beard, talking/interacting to NPCs.. that kind of things not the whole concept of the game (rdr). And the contract thing that AC games have.. Man prototype was a blast I used to play it every day back then I really hope to see a reboot or prototype 3 someday
The “nemesis system” was patented so no other game developer could use it 🤓
Yep. God forbid EA actually comes up with something interesting, it'll be inaccessible to everyone forever.

Gears 4 was so bad compared to the original trilogy. A shell of what it was at its peak. Hope the new 1 goes back to brutal warfare with weight to it again
I personally think super hot should be on the list, because super hot's 'time only moves when you move' concept was the most unique at that time.
It's not a unique concept, just part of a "gameplay" time manipulation have been in games early on before super hot

Prototype, I wish they had just remastered The Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction. As basically thats what Prototype is
