Pretty sure there's some around. I've heard that shift work is considered a carcinogenic so to speak, because shift workers have a higher probability for cancer. Might not be exclusively for sleep reasons though. Probably they are also more prone for eating on the run, less home cooked meals, less socials because they are out of sync with family and friends, etc.
I had always thought I was a night owl. In my teens I was up till 1am then in my 20's had a late shift job getting home like 1am. I didnt go to sleep until at least midnight through my 40s when I started getting really poor sleep. down to about 4/5hrs a day. It took me 4 months of implementing every sleep good habit early this year but I've been in bed 10pm and right to sleep, up naturally at 6am the last 9 months. Never felt better.
Great interview, Chris and Matthew. I work at the sleep institute in Vancouver and I love discovering new sleep related content. It's been exciting to see how influencers (like Andrew Huberman, Bryan Johnson, and Iron Patriot) are getting the general public interested in the world of sleep.

I’m a train driver with a shift pattern involving staggered start and finish times meaning a regular sleep pattern is impossible. I’ve read Mr Walkers book and listened to this podcast and actually feel concerned at what lies ahead regarding my health 😔 Try to keep myself fit and eat well but I get an overwhelming sense that not getting regular good quality sleep means lots of health related issues further down the line 😱
My breath work is during the day, put on my music and sing! It’s great because you have to be able to breathe in deep and hold it when you’re singing out long sentences. 😊
Great interview ! Loved listening to Dr. Walker. Learned a lot. Love the hair style. Don`t change it ! You are excellent at communicating the sleep science. Looking forward to your future discoveries ! Thankyou !
Dreaming is highly underrated and underutilized. It unlocks a new level of creativity, problem solving and skill building. Especially if you start practicing lucid dreaming, you can use it to gain higher self awareness, get rid of fears and nightmares and more. Some world changing inventions come from dreams as well like benzene and the periodic table
Good timing, this holiday break I got 5 or 6 days in a row of a solid 8 hours of deep restful sleep for the first time in probably 5 years. (12pm-8am) Sunday night came around, made a cup of tea and was in bed at 9pm. I was still up, went outside and sat outside at 3am, came in finally get some sleep. Woke up at 5:15am for work. (This happens multiple times a week) Tired but wired.....
I've had chronic fatigue my whole life. I had a period where everything lined up and I started sleeping for 10hours a night, within a few months I got onto the front foot with my energy levels. I was deeply and safely in my parasympathetic state and my body had banked all this deep rest and sleep. Normally with CFS you're on the backfoot. A big day requires you to become hyperstimulated because you're drawing from a complete lack of reserves and then that over activation results in even worse sleep and a crash the following day.
28:52 "How Much of this is me ? and how much of this should i identify myself with. and how much of this is just a byproduct of what's going on the moment? it's really intersting" hit my sould on this one, thanks for the modern wisdom! happy new year and best wishes to your success !
Tell Dr. Matthew Walker that his hairstyle suits him well. He should embrace it, it does give Bon Jovi vibes, but it suits him, as long as it makes him feel amazing about himself (to be honest, he looks ten years younger, whatever he is doing it suits him well- he should give us the secret of rejuvenating). The conversation was a delight, I could listen to another two more hours of the both of you conversing.
The point on coffees effectiveness stemming from the coffee bean not the caffeine due to individuals being so deprived of anti oxidants was revelatory!
I love the way this man talks, so intelligent, passionate with a real grasp of how to intertwine analogies while still keeping to the scientific language. He needs to do some voice overs for audible. Mother fucker had me falling asleep at midday.

While Dr. Matthew Walker's insights on sleep are certainly valuable, it's worth noting that there has been some controversy surrounding his work, particularly regarding the validity of some of his claims and the way he's presented certain studies. For example, some critics argue that his discussions on sleep deprivation might be oversimplified, and there's been some pushback from other researchers in the field. Is it addressed in the podcast? I don't see it in the timestamps. It could have been an interesting point of discussion for listeners to consider.
In fairness Chris isn't the one who's questioned his findings so for there to be a fair debate you would need participants from both sides, this isn't the environment for such a debate.
I've averaged 5hr 45 mins of sleep for years now and I can function perfectly the next day. By your info I should be dead by the time I'm 60. I maybe have 7 hours sleep a handful of times per year. I want science to study my brain 😁😁
I mostly sleep okay, but after going through menopause,my hours changed. Can’t get to sleep until 2-3 am. Same as my mum and older sister. How does menopause affect sleeping?
Been a night owl all my life Slept around 1-2 am and my evening routine started at 7-7:30 and dinner at 10 But now my evening starts with sunset at 4:30-5 Dinner at 7 at sleep by 10:30-11 Still night owl but doing everything 3 hrs before Aligned myself with sunset
I generally have no trouble going to sleep and I stick to a regular routine. However I gradually developed a problem waking up roughly every 90mins to 2 hours after the first 4 hours or so, and I have trouble going back to sleep then. If all goes well I can manage another spell of almost 2 hours, otherwise that's it for that night. I worked nights for a couple of years and it messed up my sleep even more. Always been a very early morning person, even if I stay up to try to sleep later and be more in tune with the rest of humanity, can never sleep past 5am anyway. Should have been a dairy farmer. Would love to know why I have this regular waking up pattern and how to stop it.
What I want to know is can it be added up? Like if you sleep five, get up to pee and then go back to sleep is that seven? Or if you sleep twelve one night then four the next is that good/bad?
I did the sleep type test and it was difficult to answer some of the questions because my answers depend on the seasons…in the winter my energy levels are later in the day but summer it is morning… I also think for women our sleep changes based on where we are in our cycle so this test may not be as helpful or accurate for cycling women.
Matt is good but his content can be counterproductive because he says the worst things will happen if you don't sleep, which is a common automatic negative thought that puts pressure and makes people actually sleep worse. Other sleep experts are more like "if you don't sleep today, you won't die" and that makes whatever sleep you get more enjoyable.
I'm Swedish. We have always been doing the double duvet and the standard for double beds are with 2 separate bottoms and only the top mattresses are united. But the top is essentially two "cassettes" joined together. This is called a "Continental". But lots of people just put two singel beds together too and so far as I know that little divide is not what's causing the population decline....
We naturally wake up by facts and go to sleep by theory. That's why morning productivity is important, and after a long, hard day, you can kick back by the fire with entertainment and theories to fall asleep to. Your body is reset or refreshed as much as it can be after you wake up, and to not take advantage of this to be the most productive part of the day is not good. That and not getting enough physical activity is not good for men either. Sometimes, men just need to wear out their muscles to slow down the mind. Often, the most relaxed mind is from an exhausted body at the end of the day. It's hard not to feel accomplishment from an exhausted body when that normally means you have worked hard towards a goal and your mind knows this. When I'm not sleeping well, this is normally my problem and I know what I need to do.
Ding ding ding...💯 Here you go folks 👍don't know if this gentleman is a "sleep" expert or not??this is 💯 🙏 valuable info for some maybe not others...god bless you 🙏
Just finished his book, great timing for the interview. However I did stay up late to finish reading his book which I found fucking hilarious, sorry Matthew.
If we want to overthink the poorer sleep as we age idea, one possibility could be through behavioral genetics. If we are older, with one and possibly two generations of offspring, those who sleep less, or wake more easily could be at an advantage, in the sense of being better positioned to spot predictors or enemies.
12:04 It is categorically wrong that “most people don’t want to reach for a pill”, and it’s an absolutely central argument to the modern opioid epidemic. People will nearly always select a pill over changing behavioral routines.
People always take a pill instead of facing any kind of pain. Acid reflux? Pill instead of changing your diet. Fever? Pill instead of letting the body fight the infection and using other methods to keep body temperature down. Can't sleep? Pill with 4g+ of melatonin. Anxious? Xanax instead of fixing your life and stress. Fat? Ozempic instead of fixing your diet and moving more. Allergies? Antihistamine instead of finding the root cause. Like Captain America I could do this all day. Sure, when there's an acute symptom, you need a pill, but the problem usually started manifesting a long time ago, you just let it slide and didn't take action.
@@PiotrGołacki-t3s I cannot imagine how hard it is, especially for people with a family or single moms. But it is definitely possible by being humble and learning new skills, even if unrelated to the actual job or college degree. There's always hope

What if you have pain issues that make it hard to get to sleep?
Me watching this on new years probably not going to sleep any time soon
The triple click to red is an absolute must
Matt is my favorite Elden Ring build 🔥💪
St Trina's sword build 🔥
Is there a shorted or summary of this, it is 02:00 already ? 😩
What I want to know is can it be added up? Like if you sleep five, get up to pee and then go back to sleep is that seven? Or if you sleep twelve one night then four the next is that good/bad?
I did the sleep type test and it was difficult to answer some of the questions because my answers depend on the seasons…in the winter my energy levels are later in the day but summer it is morning…
I also think for women our sleep changes based on where we are in our cycle so this test may not be as helpful or accurate for cycling women.
Keith Urban!!❤
As a 48 year old shift worker (last 18 years) I have no hope for regular sleep
Matt is good but his content can be counterproductive because he says the worst things will happen if you don't sleep, which is a common automatic negative thought that puts pressure and makes people actually sleep worse. Other sleep experts are more like "if you don't sleep today, you won't die" and that makes whatever sleep you get more enjoyable.
WHATS GOING ON. WHY DOES IT LOOK LIKE THAT. I DONT WANT TO SLEEP ANYMORE
🤣🤣🤣
I'm Swedish. We have always been doing the double duvet and the standard for double beds are with 2 separate bottoms and only the top mattresses are united. But the top is essentially two "cassettes" joined together. This is called a "Continental".
But lots of people just put two singel beds together too and so far as I know that little divide is not what's causing the population decline....
Matt looks like Prince Charming from Shrek
Hahahahahhaahhahahahhahahhahahahhahaa
Why is Mickey Rourke talking so clearly ?
1:27:03 resumed the podcast when the video was on Chris and for a second there I wondered why the arm looked strange 😅
The audio is so crisp...
Keep the hair it's great 😃❤️
Hooray Matt Walker. It's been awhile 😊
This is so depressing, I haven't a hope in hell of ever getting good sleep based on this podcast
Thank you for sharing all of this for free! You’re helping more people than you know.
10 out 10 ❤
We naturally wake up by facts and go to sleep by theory.
Ding ding ding...💯 Here you go folks 👍don't know if this gentleman is a "sleep" expert or not??this is 💯 🙏 valuable info for some maybe not others...god bless you 🙏
Faf de Klerk 🤝🏼 Matthew Walker
Just finished his book, great timing for the interview. However I did stay up late to finish reading his book which I found fucking hilarious, sorry Matthew.
Never expected Will Ferrell to know so much about sleep
If we want to overthink the poorer sleep as we age idea, one possibility could be through behavioral genetics. If we are older, with one and possibly two generations of offspring, those who sleep less, or wake more easily could be at an advantage, in the sense of being better positioned to spot predictors or enemies.
12:04 It is categorically wrong that “most people don’t want to reach for a pill”, and it’s an absolutely central argument to the modern opioid epidemic. People will nearly always select a pill over changing behavioral routines.
Any data confirming your claim?
Thanks Matt for all your incredible knowledge!
25:38 I’ve never heard someone in the modern world use the word ‘fortnight’ unironically 😂
This will be interesting! Matthew is one knowledgeable dude.
Bro went to Zac Efron's doc
Bro's been getting such a good night sleep that he's turning into an Elf
These people live in a bubble…with respect…imagine a truck driver listening to this and trying to engage in a healthy sleep routine
It would be his duty to switch career if he cares enough about his longevity. I also do shifts at work and I am working on find a better job
@SalvatoreNicoFranco sure, but for too many people switching careers is not an option. There always will be people willing to work crazy schedules
@@PiotrGołacki-t3s I cannot imagine how hard it is, especially for people with a family or single moms. But it is definitely possible by being humble and learning new skills, even if unrelated to the actual job or college degree. There's always hope
@@SalvatoreNicoFrancoby that logic we’d have no truck drivers, no emergency services, no A&E, no hospitals, the world would fall apart
I spent half my life thinking I was a night owl... turns out I was a morning person who loved the early EARLY morning, just before the sun.
Dr. Mike catching strays in the ad read 😂
My drill sergeant solved this problem for me and hundreds other men years ago
Liz Schwartz: Hmmm. How long does it take with the tennis ball? I mean, give me some hope, man. A week? A year?
