    Chinese speaker here, Golden Finger is a literal translation of 金手指, which is an umbrella term for cheat devices (Game Genie, Action Replay etc.) here in Taiwan. Judging from this video, seems like Hong Kong gamers also called them by the same name. The name stems from the metal contacts on the cartridge looking like gold-colored fingers, but it only applies to the cheat devices and not the cartridges themselves.

      Kevin Wang Are you Norman's Asian counterpart? You should collaborate. And now to my Asian correspondent, "Kevin Wang" and then you pop up in a little box in the upper corner of the screen. It would be hilarious.

    • @kevwang0712
      @kevwang0712 6 років тому +13

      @pizzamon 79 Haha, I wish! My only retro gaming cred is that I still have a working NES (not Famicom btw, back in the day in Taiwan we had the Japanese version and carts, I grew up in Canada so our family had a North American NES), and my mom only ever allowed me to buy four NES games aside from the SMB1/Duck Hunt bundled cart, but if Norman does want to run anything related to the East Asia market through me I'd be more than willing to help out! (on an entirely unrelated side note, I've been speedrunning SMB1 and SMB3 on original equipment, but I've only just begun for about a year)

      Kevin Wang very interesting. I once had my hands on a Chinese Famiclone which came with a lot off rip-off games (original Famicom titles with some changed assets). It had some similar cheat code system. As a kid I never knew how to get it working, though. :P

    • @kevwang0712
      @kevwang0712 6 років тому +3

      Seems to be a common theme. Once when I was staying in a hostel in southern Taiwan, they also had a Famiclone that uses proper carts instead of having the games built in, and there also seemed to be some sort of mysterious cheat code system. Of course the games on the 70-in-1 cart were all ripoffs

      funny enough, I think people just referred to any game genie/shark type device as a 金手指 ...its a term I heard up until the 2000s with other canto speakers too. Can confirm we say that too in canto.

    I’d like to explain more about Golden finger. Golden finger is a straight translation from Chinese “金手指”. Basically, a golden finger includes two function. One is the same function as well as Game gene. Another is technologically a number detector. In mainland of China, it was pretty hard to have a real Nintendo licensed cartridge in 1990s and 2000s. In this case, most people use emulator. When the game was hard, people can use software to search specific number, then make the number change variously to make sure software does detect the number. Then the software will change the number. For this process there are two ways. One is by changing the save data , we used this way to cheat when we playing Pokémon. Another is by changing the actual game data when the game is running. I believe golden finger uses the second way.

      Thanks for explaining! I remember hearing about the golden finger as a kid and my friends thought it was this magical device that could translate Japanese games into English (I imported Pokemon Gold when it was first released which is how this came up at school). I guess it's more of a cheat device and not as magical as my 10-year-old mind made it seem back then. :)

      +EposVox Actually, it isn’t… Detel’s GBHunter (sorry, didn’t save the PAL region’s name; GBHunter wasn’t directly marketed by Detel) uses three channel, square wave only sound at a very low bitrate and with no real idea of what could have even been done with the completely lacklustre amount of playroom that gives you. Most of the keygens actually had decent music to them, even if it may not have been to your taste. About 90% of them actually use music from the demo scene back in the 8-bit era. Think about the famous c64 SID chip, or MOD- or StreamTracker modules from the Amiga, to name two of the main ‘providers’. Something that can definitely _NOT_ be said for whatever piece of junk has been used to compensate for the lack of audio support in Detel’s products. Speaking of audio, I actually was amazed to hear that absolutely _none_ of those devices even _tried_ to do anything with the original game’s audio in the first place. Apart from the GBA TV converter, that is…

System Menu 3.0 however prevented unofficial GC software from being used with the Wii, making the Advance Game Port unusable with the Wii.

    Weird that you don't know what V-sync means. It's a really common thing in gaming. It means the frames will be rounded down to what your monitor can display. With V-sync it slows it down slightly to make sure it won't push an image if the monitor isn't yet ready to display it. Without that you can get screen tearing where you have two halves of an image and you can see the seam because they are not identical.

    Nobody's mentioned the etymology of "gold finger" yet, so here's what I managed to find out:
    There is no clear origin of the term. Although, supposedly, in Hong Kong, it referred to a criminal who would betray their partners for personal gain or to get lighter sentences, but using "gold finger" to mean a snitch has fallen out of use. When the James Bond movie Goldfinger was released, it came back into use and has gained several meanings, including "to cheat" or in the context of literature, a "mary sue".
    When video game cheat devices were starting to be more available to the consumer, a company made a cheat device for the original Playstation (very similar to the Gameshark), named it "Gold Finger" (the metal contacts on a cartridge look like golden fingers, incidentally), and the name has stuck since.

    The GB operator is a nice 3rd party Game Boy Player for PC. Not only does it play GB, GBC, and GBA games, but it also has emulation features like cheat codes and controller support. It has no dealbreakers at all, nothing that makes it worse than a Game Boy Player. It can be used on a smart TV with screen sharing tools if you don't like playing on your monitor. It also has support for features like putting your GB camera photos on your computer (and maybe you'll be able to use your GB camera as a webcam soon) and backing up your saves in case you need to replace a dead battery.

    Great video, as always!
    Every Game Boy player that uses emulation is pretty much terrible. I'd rather use a Game Boy Player instead. That last little add-on with composite output sounds great, if someone offered a service to solder it on. Other than that, I don't really care too much about playing them on a big screen. They're fine as handheld games on a backlit GBA SP.

    The GB Hunter's whole vibe feels so eerie and uncomfortable to me. The drowned out, staticky music loop trying desperately to clear the dead air of silence, only adding insult to injury on one of its primary faults as an emulator for a system that didn't even have complex sound capabilities for its time, especially. But also its _tiny_ screen window paired with the GameBOY's black and white color scheme, the strange warping text of its startup splash, its cheap-looking menus with the bright-red all caps impact font text...
    It's so strange, and I pity anyone who bought it to play GameBOY games back in the day, whether they had any other way to play it, or didn't and just wasted their money.
    As much as it does, though, I find it hilarious that they called action replay codes "Golden Finger Codes". I'm just imagining some kind of annual event show, where they give out the 'Golden Finger' award to the best cheats or something.

    There's also the Super Retro Advance Adapter by Retrobit, that plugs into an SNES. Sure, you need separate video cables to get picture and sound, but if you have a Super Retro Trio, you don't need them. The compatibility is quite strong, I've played around 30 or so games on it, and haven't had a single issue with it. But it only played GBA games.

    Good Video and nice too see that someone made another Video about this "Things". I also made one Video about the Playstation Version and had a hard Time with the Research, but can say that there are a least 4 Verison of this Adapter. The first one is like the N64 Version (and as far as I could find, also the only Version for the N64), the Second one is a Version with no Sound at all and the Third one is the one with the Build in CD Player Funktion. The forth one is an Version with an Switch on the Side, where you could toggle bethween the GB Booster and an Action Replay (Gold FInger) for the Playstation itself.
    The mysterious Save Backup Funktion is for the Gamesave. The Adapter is, like you sayd, an Software Emulator and dont uses the Module itself (you can unplug the Modul after the Game is loaded). The Save Backup Funktion writes the Savefile back to the GameBoy Game, if you dont do this, all Progress is gone.
    Little Fun Fact on the SIde. The inbuild Game is a Bootleg. Rebound Mission is known als Pokemission 97 and was programmed by Anders Granlund in the Mid 90s.

    I had the Advance Game Port as a kid, and none of the cheat, zoom, save states, built in games, or really any extra options were available. My disc only provided shoddy emulation, and the sound was often hilarious. Monsters Inc for the GBA, a game with normally a pretty alright soundtrack, becomes an orgy of loud sporadic brass instruments and it's kind of amazing. The games also ran typically in a really choppy manner.
    So, even if you got the AGP, you couldn't count on having really any of the things mentioned in this video. The AGP shown here looks INCREDIBLE in comparison to the one I had.
    Not to mention, I lost my disc and AGP for quite a while and I replaced it years later to relive these amusing and bewildering memories and the same applies to my second unit.

    It always struck me as odd that Nintendo never launched an N64 cartridge that would work with the Transfer Pack and let people play their games through that. The closest we got was a very limited set of N64 games (Pokémon Stadium) that would work with an equally limited set of GameBoy games (Pokémon R/B/Y/G/S). Even then, your GameBoy game needed to be saved in a Pokémon Centre to get to work.
    I heard rumours that Perfect Dark 64 would work with Perfect Dark GB and GameBoy Camera through the Transfer Pack, but apparently never materialized.
