Tip of the hat mister! It's the second restoration video that comes in handy as i owned and old Tyco F7 and a Shark Nose and now i know how to restore them. Those locos were bought by my grand father and never run. Unfortunatelly he was unable to finish his layout as he passed away six months ago. So now it's me who is working on the layout and bringing these locos back to life and giving them the place they deserve. Again thanks for this restoration videos. Cheers my friend
Great to see SMT Mainline developing an understanding for yourself and viewers that things break for a reason and can often be simply fixed. A great life skill that everyone can benefit by. Recommend you get some crocodile clips to help make a reliable test electrical connection. Does this Model Power loco have any Roco markings on it? Roco made many high standard models for Model Power and Atlas back in the 70s. Although this vid is titled Canadian National Shark Restoration, the important fact is that you are repairing a Model Power / Roco mechanism. Colour scheme is irrelevant to searches. A Tyco Shark would be a different kettle of fish and would give no where near the great result you achieved. There are sharks and sharks, some very good makes some not so good. In the 80s I assisted with a four day model railway exhibition where a 10 year old Model Power/ Roco Shark ran so well for all 4 days and some nights yet at the end showed no signs of wear and still ran great. A quality product.
wow! I admire your work! 25 years ago if not more I modeled some of these for my dad....using atlas RS11 underframes mounting the model power shells I made some great models of the EJ&E Railway.....I always loved model power, of course my father was into then NEW high performance models.....to this day I still have a itch for restoring these....
Another great fix Harrison, well done as another locomotive joins the fleet at a bargain of $10.00 and a bit of your patience Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍😎😎😎 Cary
Sometimes it can be as simple as old lubricants, Harrison. One still needs to know how to take the loco apart, relubricate it, and put it back together properly, and you are doing an awesome job sharing your expertise with all the "Folks" out there. 🌟 🌟 🌟 I haven't even attempted to run the Tyco 🦈 Nose Burlington Northern I picked up (new in box), but I imagine it may have the same issue. Nice CN 🦈 Nose by the way, and Bravo on another success! 👍👍👍
Plenty of nice weight, nice pickup mechanism, solid wires to take the current straight to the motor... That would make a good DCC/sound convert. It would do pretty well on grades too, I bet.
Those Model Power Shark Nose are sweet...way to stick with it and clean that mess up.....Thats similar to an Athearn Super Heavyweight with that Weight over the motor..... just Beast for pulling Big Consists! Good job and keep up the good work!!
When I find excessive hard yellow grease in a Chinese-built locomotive, I call it "yak fat". It happens in N scale locos, too. Not as common as it once was.
SMT Mainline shouldn’t affect you. All of your videos are too technical for kids. Like this one. Would you expect a 2 year old to disassemble and reassemble a HO Sharknose?
Nice! You'd like a project I'm working on. Old brass/bronze hybrid Varney mikado. Adding a whole bunch of detail, dcc sound, and giving it a personal spin.
That’s happened to me before . You can soak it in hot water and rubbing alcohol and if will come off , if you want to make the process faster you can scrub it at the same time with an old toothbrush. Btw love your videos and when will the give away winner be announced ?
What engine lubricant Zander grease do you use for your ho scale engines? Just got into the hobby with my dads old engines, and the engines need a tune up.
Awesome video!! I have some old HO locomotives that I have that I don’t use. Would you like to have them? I haven’t tested them so I’m not sure if they work.
Not surprised about the condition of the old grease. All the modern stuff is synthetic while the older oils and grease was not and would end up just like what you found. Just a suggestion though. I would have greased the gears because with out lubricant they will ware faster when they mesh. Other than that it was a cool restoration.
@@SMTMainline it isn't poor performance I am thinking about. Those gears will wear out fast if they are not greased up properly. I have seen that before.
SMT Mainline ....maybe you could do a video comparing the several different manufacturers you have and chat about the mechanical differences and detail. And why you prefer one over the others. Just a thought
@@alcopower5710 That's certainly a good idea, I've actually thought about doing a video like that however the thing that make it tough is that most of my favorite designs are old and are usually not made anymore.
SMT Mainline .....I still think it would make a great video because there is a whole lot of folks that buy locomotives off eBay used. Myself included. I’ll speak for everyone by saying that your insight into the different makes and models from a mechanical standpoint would be very valuable.
I have the same loco and it is tagged underneath as made in Austria RoCo. It has the same weight design inside, but the motor in it is smaller than your example. It is all original and can pull well over 26 cars. search "mercsnake roco" in youtube to see it pull.
Thanks for specifying what nos meant, I didn't know why people on ebay were always putting it in their listings - I knew they couldn't have been taking about nitrous oxide
If those gear boxes are metal...I would soak them overnight in a good degreaser, then wash them with warm water, and then hit them with a blow dryer. But hey...to each his own...
It generally depends on the manufacturer. Some outfits such as Athearn would use the same frame as a powered A or B and just use plastic wheelsets while some of the " toy" outfits might use a glorified freight car chassis. If it's some of the transition era ( about 25 30 years ago as Athearn transitioned from family ownership after Irv passed)blue box loco with a little work cleaning flash from gears and some simple tuning I was able to get those 30 40 dollar blue box locos running as quiet and with a creep speed on par with those 120 150 Stewart and Atlas locos
Great Restoration SMT, as always you solve what is wrong very nice shark nose, if you don't know yet you should check out Toms trains and things, Rons trains and things and Derral Eves channel about new rules from COPPA. Wouldnt want to see you lose your channel or get fined.

Great restoration. That motor is HUGE! I bet it can pull 15 to 20 cars easy. You should do a pulling challenge to see.

Glad it was just grease it was pretty simple restore glad ur shark nose runs better 👍
HO engines broken and not running
SMT Mainline: Well I can restore it

Glad you could get it working.

That shark nose looks old and fancy (also can you do a video on restoring a FP45 locomotive)
Misterdefault55 he did one 4 months ago.
That gearbox is exactly how my 2 model power sharks looked like when I got them. I wonder if that’s how much model power lubed them
Harrison was wondering if u knew where to get one of those can motors form or a good replacement for it thanks for ur help
I'm not sure. They were made by Roco if that helps.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen as much grease in a loco as that one. SMT to the rescue.......

I put a fair amount of synthetic oil so the gears are not completely lubricated, I might add some more if it shows signs of poor performance.
