I think it's demented to pay a QB as much as they are paying Lawrence - it just prevents you from paying and retaining literally ANY other skill players. Any QB that actually wants to win isn't going to ask for that kind of absurd payday. Unless they separate skill positions into separate salary caps, paying a single player regardless of position 21.5% of the cap is just nuts and a recipe for failure. I'm not saying these players don't deserve to be paid - but the way the system is set up, it punishes the entire team if one player takes up that much of the cap. I don't believe any QB that has won the super bowl has been paid more than 15-17% of cap, and even that is prohibitively high. Tom Brady averaged 9% throughout his career, and only 7.8% in years that they won the super bowl - there's a reason his teams were so successful and it's that he knew if he took all the cap for himself, they couldn't build the pieces they needed around him and on the other side of the ball.
The “best case scenario” is not a 4 year deal. The best case is a Mahomes deal 6+ years with partial guarantees and every year he plays well the next year automatically fully guarantees. It’s literally pay for play with a big number and gives you a ton more restructure flexibility. I hope the packers aren’t looking at the Goff/lawrence deals as the bench mark. If you trust love which I do, lock him and make him guarantee his contract with his play like the chiefs did early in mahomes contract. It’s not rocket science
Every year QBs have to prove they are that Dude. Even then, a slew of things have to still go right or they are sitting a HOME, like mostly everyone else. Just look at what happen with the Eagles. He was that dude, then he wasn't.
Knowing how the Green Bay front office works, don’t be surprised if they wait. They made Gary wait before paying him last year and Gary was coming off an injury but looked dominating before it happened. I’d rather they get a deal done by camp but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they waited until week 8 to see how year 2 looks. If they do wait and he does dominate they’re gonna have to pay him a bunch
they are looking rather scary IMHO. Right now, it's all on paper, but I hope to god JL follows the TB12 philosophy and leaves enough $$ on the table to keep this incredible corp of WR's around for the next 5+ years. My god, they could dominate like no other.. I think they're just that good
I think anyone who actually paid attention to Love's performance last year would see that he's 100% going to be a force to reckon with for his entire career. Love is, without a doubt, going to be in the top 3 QBs this coming season. Pay the man!!
I finally agree with ESPN lol we have to stop the run. We have never been able to stop it the last 10-13 years. We just always were able to put up enough points or lead enough games late to reduce the rush attempts. I also agree they need to just get the deal done with Love. He isn’t gonna fall off a cliff and regress, at worst he will be a suitable starter and at best he will be a pro bowl mvp caliber. He listens to Matt and is a team player, and Matt calls perfect plays, which Jordan can execute and will follow the play so there should be minimal mistakes since he won’t be just doing what he wants
Gutey is smart. He wants to pay Love. He knows how fast the QB market keeps escalating. He’s gonna pay him. But he wants to make sure it’s 60mil. You’re gonna see QBs like Lawrence and Burrow wanting to rework their contracts in the next two years because of all the money that’s going to be dished out in that time. He wants to make sure Love is covered financially enough where his contract won’t need to be reworked for the full length of it
It's always interesting to hear Adam talk when he has no idea what's going on. I'm sure that he has some information, but he's almost always wrong when he has to expand on the stuff that he does know. Fact of the matter is that you have to look past the raw numbers of APY. Look at it as percentage of the annual salary cap instead. The Lawrence deal is way different from the Burrow deal.
