One of the greatest Kings of Italy, he is still fondly remembered in Italian history, probably the only gothic ruler to enjoy such a positive reputation.
Don’t forget Theodoric I from the Visigoths, he actually died in battle fighting the Huns with the Romans. Tolkien actually made a character in LoTR based off of him too, not only that but the gothic language also inspired him to create one for LoTR.
That's very unfortunate, there are many more Gothic rulers that are also very deserving of that reputation. Alaric and Totila immediately come to mind. Totila especially deserves to be remembered as he was a ruler that those in charge today should strive to emulate, much more then vipers like Xeno, weaklings like Honorius, or Demons like Justinian.
I wouldn't say Theodoric's achievements died with him, rather they shaped his legacy to become a figure of legend in germanic folktales as Dietrich Von Bern.

The Visigoths eventually intermingled with the Hispano Romans in hispania during the rule of Leovilgildo (who just like Theodoric) set up Roman institutions while mixing gothic elements into it. Though because of this, ethnic distinction largely disappeared by the 7th and 8th century but it proved to be for the better since during the invasion of the Muslim caliphate, Hispano-goths went to create a small kingdom that later served as a bastion for Christian resistance against the Muslims. 10:45 so as a nice pure blooded goth boy, I feel the need to tell you that the Romans treated the Germanic tribes like shit for like 500 years before Theodoric was even born. On top of that, there were already Germanic people all throughout Italy, you seem to be thinking that it was like Spain where the Visigoths came in limited numbers. Theodoric moved like a quarter million Ostrogoths into Italy, and Odovacer had already been ruling over Italy as a Germanic general. You’re ignoring some geographical and population demographic nuances here. The city of Rome and some other cities in that general region of Italy were made up of very mixed populations since well before the empire started tanking. But the north by Ravenna and that whole region and especially anywhere north of the start of the alps was entirely Germanic. Atilla forced a ton of Germanic people’s south of the Alps for awhile. The goths (which I’m sure includes all Germanics) were NOT a minority in population demographics overall in Italy. At least not by any major metric. And Theodoric was ruling more than JUST Italy.
