Thank you both so very much! This information was invaluable to me. Meeting with my MD in two weeks to discuss. I am shocked to learn at each trip to my medical providers for active surveillance of my low grade prostate cancer (and prostatitis and BPH with urinary problems and high PSA), that I am better informed than they are! Thank you!

As always, very informative and interesting. I have prostate cancer untreated by choice and my urinary symptoms really improved after starting Finestiride 9 years ago. Thanks for your excellent videos.

One interesting side effect is that you can't be a blood donor while taking Finasteride, as it can cause abnormal genital development for male babies when pregnant women are exposed to it. It may take a while for it to take effect on your PSA, and your prostate size, but it does happen. The thumb rule is you need to double the PSA number, so a rise in PSA if you are using it for BPH is probably a trigger to investigate with an MRI and biopsy.

I have been on finasteride for many years and was recently diagnosed with 4+3 Gleason prostate cancer. One week ago, I received a 6 month shot of Eligard to start my ADT treatment prior to actual brachy and radiation treatments. Should I discontinue the finasteride or continue to take it now? Will it have a positive, negative, or no effect at all on the ADT treatment or subsequent prostate focal treatments. My PSMA pet scan was negative for any metasis. Thank you!

I was on this drug for ten years. Some side effects I experienced were lower sex drive, depression and horrible anxiety attacks. Merck eventually put these side effects on the labelling of this medication.

Why no discussion of Dutasteride? Most clinical studies I have seen says it is superior to Finasteride, the same class of drug.

I'm untreated stage 4 terminal PCa I found low dose 10 mg Cialis to be a better alternative to Flomax no bad side effect... also has anti cancer effect per Pubmed, my doctor agreed after some reading.

    Great informative video as always.
My doctor prescribed Dutasteride three years ago for BPH and prostatitis.
It has been very effective in shrinking my prostate and lowering PSA.
I am still taking it and the side effects have been minimal.
I am wondering why my doctor prescribed Dutasteride instead of Finasteride and how they differ?

@@AussieInvestigator if your doctor prescribed it, why not ask your doctor their reason?

My GP several yrs ago prescribed finasteride as preventative to prevent enlarged prostate. No side effects. My current GP stopped the finasteride in Jan. saying it muddies the accuracy of PSA testing.

I'm 77 years old and was diagnosed with Gleason 6 PCa about four years ago and have been on active surveillance . About a year and a half ago I started on Dutasteride and Tamsulosin and have been very pleased with the results. PSA numbers went down a bit , prostate size went down and I can sleep through the night. The only downside is a reduction in semen volume. However, there is one possible effect that appears to be very unusual and possibly incorrect. I just had an MRI (3T at a research university) and the two lesions that had been previously identified (MRI and biopsy) as Gleason 6 appear to have disappeared! I've asked them to re-check the MRI (but they are quite proud of their abilities) and plan to have a follow-up biopsy in August. Has anyone seen a similar result?

Finasteride is a terrifying med. But there's simply no treatment for BPH that doesn't destroy one's quality of life. It's awful being old. It's hopeless.

It may also cause a more aggressive prostate cancer.

Proven to be not true ... The enlarged prostate hides the lesions and they become more apparent and detectable as the prostate shrinks ... The alternative to not taking the medication is to have an even larger prostate and more discomfort and reduced urine flow ... I'm going to consider a PAE procedure to reduce the size without medication. Very effective, virtually no side effects, has long term efficacy and a very low re-treatment rate. Also, you're in and out of the radiologist in a couple hours with nothing but a band-aid and back to normal life the next day...

I have been prescribed Tamsulosin, but it reduces my blood pressure, which is low normally as I practice sports regularly (110/65 is an average reading), so with Tamsulosin it went below 100 and I fainted twice. I stopped this class of drugs, and manage my BHP with lycopene and saw palmetto. I may try Finasteride...

If lower libido is the price to pay for shrinking the prostate and relieving pain, discomfort and easing of lower urinary tract symptoms then it's a price I'd be willing to pay... I doubt anyone will continue to have a healthy sex drive as the prostate continues to enlarge eventually needing a catheter or a TURP or worse a prostatectomy ...
