    Whenever I create a character, I tend to blend two arche-paths together. They seem a bit more multifaceted that way, so not just a soldier but a spiritual soldier, so they're on the path of the priest AND of the warrior. Or a scientist AND a lover. This in itself provides conflict within and without the character, inner turmoil that is delicious to dig through and have the character teach you about themself.

    She’s such a great speaker. And her perspective on this stuff is like right in line with what makes things interesting for me. Loved this interview! I’ve never heard someone speak and immediately searched for the books they wrote until now.

    Just a warning the title is inaccurate, it should be called *"Mythological Archetypes in Fiction"* ... when I clicked the link I was not expecting a discussion on the leveling systems of the occult.

    • @C.Church
      @C.Church 7 років тому +3

      Samuel Wallace ... title warning? you mean you expect people to tiptoe around your personal beliefs? not gonna happen.

    • @samwallaceart288
      @samwallaceart288 7 років тому +14

      No. But I do expect people to label their video with a more specific title. The archetypes she's referring to are more reflective of a specific subculture of mysticism than it is a overarching cross-section of all, or at least, classical, mythology. Only a small portion of the intended audience would correctly guess the subject based on this comparatively vague title.

    This woman is out cold. She seems to be very self aware and at ease with her light and dark side - the whole human. I was just thinking I would like to start with the villian for my story. I'm reflecting on John Truby's "double reversal".

      Film Courage Thank you for your reply.
      I have a request for you, if you're interested; would miss Smith be interested in doing another video with you in where you would ask her philosophical questions related to the structure, the background in her novel? I'm aiming at the universal structure here. I am for example curious to know if the philosophy in her books are based on characters with free will or that these very same characters follow a laid out path.
      Or better yet; does both options differ in her different books, and if yes, how will that be noticeable?

      @@filmcourage Thank you so much for your work and the quality of the questions. Pamela's tools are brilliant ! Plus she's managed to both simplify things and enrich the perception of the craft. One thing is most guests mention historical films being rejected... Would it be possible to know more about this please ?

    Perhaps, fate would have it. My video is about Orpheus and his love, he's dead and her alive. Heaven and hell, Omg. The irony! I knew nothing of this, when I wrote, my adaptation. I am God-smacked! And delighted, at the same time. Unbelievable, who the hell was I channeling?! Watch the video, it's uncanny! Lmao

    I bought her book The Power of the Dark Side. So dissapointing. She is cataloguing the types of villains, telling things we already know; she is misleading us to stereotypes instead of making us question the complex human psychology. She is neither taking risks nor making a real effort. Even the way she talks; is she babysitting someone? It is making me so upset she's got a room on this channel, where there are some real experts instead, like John Truby.

    It was all great until she started with the pseudoscientific nonsense, chakras, astrology, etc.

    • @maximeteppe7627
      @maximeteppe7627 7 років тому +1

      yeah, i wasn't expecting that. I believe the occult is an interzesting framwork, but when you bring astrology as the reason why the supernatuural is a popular theme, i'm out. I hope the book is more in depth, and doesn't go on too many similar tengeants. Has anyone read it?

    • @C.Church
      @C.Church 7 років тому +5

      manamaster6 ... Oh get over yourself. It's just a framework to scale characters. When she said (the oft repeated) "loin vs head" you were probably OK with that. All that chakra talk is the gradient between the loin and the head. You don't have to believe it to find it useful. After all, this is to help write fiction, things that didnt happen. But maybe we should run JK Rowling up a flagpole by her underpants for letting her brain fall out writing about magic and other pseudoscience. We dont want to lose our Skeptic Card.

    • @maximeteppe7627
      @maximeteppe7627 7 років тому +3

      The use of symbols and archetype is not the issue. It is the fact that she seems to apply that type of astrological thinking to real life as well. Again, quoting a change to the era of the mage or something, as the explanation for fantasy going mainstream.
      There is a nuance there.
