Koichiro Isezaki (b. 1974) is one of the most exciting potters working in Japan today. Born to a potting dynasty, Isezaki has combined his exposure to 20th century sculpture and his studies in the West with his deep roots in his local Bizen tradition, producing work that is at once fresh, contemporary and connected deeply with the past.

This work is so movig. thankyou for this excellent narrative.
While in Japan in ‘94 I stayed with a family who when they found I was a potter took me for a visit to a local potter. He was very gracious and I was treated to tour of his pottery (and tea and snacks!!) The 4 chamber anagama kiln was amazing! Later at my host family’s home a neighbor who was a ceramics collector gifted me with 3 five inch Bizen plates ❤️❤️❤️ I made a display for them when I got home where they remain a treasure visually and in use!!
I never paid much attention to pottery before but after numerous presentations from this gallery I now appreciate the beauty and subtlety of clay work.
That's great to hear, thanks!
I am just learning to appreciate the art of ceramics from these videos
Happy to hear that!
On a more practical, less aesthetic note, Bizen mugs are excellent for drinking traditional ales. Being unglazed stoneware the clay surface helps create a very good head on the beer that stays there longer. The thick, heavier stoneware, also keeps it cooler longer.Drinking from a fine Bizen mug is also a nice way to honour and do justice to a classic ale. Stoneware was probably the original vessel for ales too, so it seems such a natural and pleasant way to serve it and drink it.
Thanks for your comment
I just got back from Okayama last weekend and bought a Bizen pottery flower vase - it was so beautiful but I did not know anything about Bizen the art form, let alone the history behind it. I just felt a deep attraction that I couldnt explain. Your video explained so much, thank you
