  • This was the 60th anniversary event at IRM, in which they brought in Lehigh Valley Coal Company 126, Central Pacific Railroad 63 (The Leviathan), and UP 6936 (DD40AX). All the running locomoitves include the Leviathan, LV 126, The Nebraska Zephyr, BN 3, CSS&SB 803 (Little Joe), and several other trains. The DD40AX and the UP Gas Turbine were also on display, but 6936 ran during the night shoot. Here's a photo I took of the DD40AX and the Turbine: www.railpictures.net/photo/449694

      BNSF-3001 It would be great to see, but I have heard that the noise from a turbine is substantial. For that reason, they may not try to restore it to running condition. I'm not sure about that, though.

    • @billchambers1456

      +Raymond Leggs No doubt it is, but there are environmental concerns such as noise pollution. I have read that when the UP used the turbines, it was roughly between Cheyenne and Ogden, which is almost all wide open country. If the IRM restores the turbine, it may have to get some kind of release to use it even on their rural track. But still it would be a neat thing to see, if not hear.

    When I visited the Illinois Railway Museum in 2006 there weren't a lot of these trains running. The B&O locomotives were still in restoration
    The Zephyr was still in a rail shed. The DD40AX was parked on a back siding track.

    I'd love to see a Turbine run under it's own power. That should be the next UP project. :-) Get The Big Boy up and going get 3985 back on it's feet and then do a turbine. I think GE should help them with that!

    • @ArchTeryx00
      @ArchTeryx00 5 років тому +1

      That would be extremely difficult, at least under turbine power. They had two settings: Katy Bar the Door and "off". The later-edition turbines did have a small prime mover in the head unit, though, so technically they COULD run under that, but you're never likely to see the turbine fired up like that in a display engine.

    • @valsyoutube3331
      @valsyoutube3331 4 роки тому

      Archibald Mirenopteryx - The turbine in those units also had several mechanical problems. The primary bearings were always the weak point.

    I landscape in Mount Prospect, IL and remember in the summer of 2015 I was mowing in a backyard where the house was next to to the tracks Im not sure if it belongs to CN or UP, but the Metra runs on it--this beautiful bright shiny yellow Union Pacific locomotive passing along with Union Pacific coach cars with it, they looked luxury with windows on top like a sky deck, wasn't any commuter coach car. It was amazing, I never saw that before, glad I saw that. Maybe you might know what I'm talking about? Id love to know what I saw.

    What impresses me about this design is how two carriages articulate over one truck. I would assume that this would make the vestibule less awkward going between the carriages. Am I wrong?

    • @metraf40c
      @metraf40c  9 років тому

      Not so much less awkward, as the conventional design works pretty much the same traveling between cars. But it does include some other advantages, such as cheaper production price and safer regarding a derailment. If you want to read about it, it's called a Jacobs Bogie.

      Jay Young I actually road the Nebraska Zephyr a lot back over 50 years ago when I was in college. As I recall, the aisle was constant throughout the train. With the cars being articulated, there was not the usual bouncing as you went from car to car. The aisle was a lot like a hall in a hotel. And the ride was very smooth also. It was truly a wonderful train.

    • @ccaammiinniiito2
      @ccaammiinniiito2 8 років тому

      Bill Chambers Hope I'm not repeating myelf. But I did manage to ride the SuperChief/ElCapitan from LA to Chicago. Then, on to New York aboard the Twentieth Century, Ltd. Little is known about the lines running between Los Angeles to SF, the morning train being The Daylight, the evening train being The Lark. Both getting you to and fro for no more than $10. Twelve dollars PSA from Santa Barbara to SF. Then much later in my life I was a guard for a train under R&D by the Sikorsky people in a barn in Providence, R.I. It was called the Turbo train, with articulated coaches and a great ride. I took it often from Providence to Boston. Never knew why it didn't go over in the US the way it did in Canada. A great product. I must be a jinx because later in life I worked on a temporary assignment for Boeing's BMS (a great job!) and was witness to another flop: the hydrofoil. Never took off here in the US. But in a Jack Lord series, I noticed it was being used to ferry passengers between Macao and some place I now forgot. Strange. Two GREAT advances in high speed technology. Smh!

      +The Nordic Stag They are putting the pantograph back up right there. They have to lower the pantograph for when they cross the junctions in the electric wire meant for street cars because the pantograph will rip those things up. Notice at 12:20, there is a metal thing on the wires, that's the junction for the street cars. As you notice, they lower it right then and they use 803's stored battery power to glide into the station. It's also effective for lowering the power bill too lol!
