I've been searching for this video again for almost two years and I'm absolutely delighted to have found it. Thank you for making this, what an awesome look into a beautiful town! I'll hopefully get to make it there myself one day.
I grew up in Bramwell from the early 70s until 1984. I went to the elementary school down by the church and also the middle and high school. I haven’t been back in many years. Thanks for giving me a look at home.
The building on the left after white church was the original elementary school, then Mr. Easterling ran a mine supply company there. In the 80's, Richard Painter was the Mayor/Sheriff/Water Commissioner and school bus driver. He drove that bus like he was in NASCAR, until he ran it off Coaldale Mountain Rd. As the Sheriff he used to chase my ass all over on my dirt bike....he never cought me...lol
thanks for the info, you must have been hell on wheels back then lol
Richard Painter was one of a kind. So many memories of Bramwell
This area is well kept. Homes and yards r well maintained. Nice !
Springtime isn't the best time of year for snow country in fact it is the worst. It is about the only time of year where everything looks a little depressing to folks who have never been in that part of the country in early spring. Once the leaves pop up the rest of the year looks pretty amazing. Leaves change and fall and are quickly replaced by beautiful white snow but early spring everything looks pretty dead. I'd like to see you go back and film any other time of year.
I'd like that town as well, thank you for the tour
My grandfather was a Italian and lived and died there .was a stone mason that helped on some of these
My husband is from Pocahontas. We visit there and Bramwell often.
Im a 26 year old african american who lives in Jackson,ms and i most say I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! ... if you ever plan on coming to MS. please let me know ❤️
Great!! Thanks for the support!
@@realappalachia i literally just finished the video!! thanks for the reply., really made my day !!
I grew up in this little ghost town. The big blue house before he crosses the bridge is supposedly haunted, I've even saw a picture where you can see what appears to be a ghost! They have now put in cabins and trails for atv riders so it's picked up a bit as far as visitors! The Old bramelwell school is also haunted and we weren't allowed in the old girls locker room for some reason.
These homes are spectacular!! I love driving these 2 Lane roads and finding gems like Bramwell.❤️
Would love to hear more 👻
We have so many of these beautiful towns here in WV! Alot of the times they'd even let you in during Halloween for candy and they look just as amazing once inside! There's even a graveyard in the woods behind my home that nobody but me and few others know about. The Graves are early 1900 and most appear to be that of children. I was camping up there with 2 friends and we can see a large orb clear as day just hovering in one spot. The same night something started throwing branches at us, you couldn't even see what it was when you shined the flashlight in the direction it came from. My childhood home in Bramwell on fletcher Street before the big rail track was haunted also. My sister was pregnant and woke up to hearing what sounded like an older fella yelling ambush in her face and my younger sister always saw a figure of a man standing in my door way looking into my bedroom at night. Everyone hated sleeping at our house lol
I just finished watching all the West Virginia videos, I can't wait for more. I used to spend a month there every other year. My dad's family is from Centralia, WV.
I have several more in the works, editing is a beast though lol. There's no other state quite like West Virginia
the walls along the streets are beautiful
good morning, thank you for your You Tube videos. I am new here in Kentucky from Illinois. I am going to be traveling on roadtrips here and surrounding area and you are helping me find my way. Subscibing is my best way of thanking you
I appreciate it more than you know, hope it helps out some in your familiarity
I love the stone walls leading up the hill.
The old Power Poles are cool too...
what an amazing place the houses still look amazing thanks for sharing 👍🏼👍🏼
they really take great care of the town
I grew up in Bramwell, left in 1984, mother worked for Norfolk & Western. It looks so much better in the spring and summer. My best friend owned the Freeman House. I wouldn't give up my memories of Bramwell for anything
U EVER BEEN TO OR THREW PALASTINE WV., THIS SIMPLE YET CLASSY GRAVE YARD HERE REMINDS ME OF THE ONE UP THERE IN Palastine , wva.,........
shane when you have time going and see Union west virginia just film a few videos there last week its a nice little town
I dont think I've ever been there before so I appreciate the tip
12:42 blue house on the left with the white deck was my house. went to the school k-4th in the 90s
I was in the fire department in Washinton Virginia. We used to have to put out two to three houses' fires every year from lightnin strikin the copper rooves. I wonder if maybe just the ligtnin rods had rusted out, or is it a hazard for everybody with a copper roof? Most of the other houses' fires were from buildin up of creosote in very old chimneys in the winter's time.
That's a very interesting looking town. Thanks for this vid.
Never been thru that area. I play Fallout 76 that takes place in an upside down, post apocalyptic Appalachia. Its cool to see these places in a real world environment. Enjoyed the video, Brother and drive on!
My great grandfather and his brothers were (most likely) those Italian stone masons. Their last name was Donelow and they came from the Florence, Italy area.
There's still a strong respect and appreciation of the Italian contribution to the area, which I enjoy seeing because it adds so much culture to the history. The masonry work is fantastic and a real tribute to the quality of work.
@@realappalachia Thank you for letting me know that. 😊 I just discovered your videos on Appalachia and have been enjoying them. My grandfather was a cole miner and lived largely in the Beckley, Raleigh county area. Eventually he moved his family here to Michigan to work in the auto industry but kept strong ties to his WV roots, traveling back and forth frequently. I went there several times as a kid too.
@@sharondonelow5364 that is a pretty common story that people moved north once mining went down. Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoy it.
Do you know what the name was originally? Donelow doesn't sound Italian. The stone work is done beautifully. Great artists.
Graduated Bluefild WV in 1994. Miss it but got have job. Should go over east river mountain.
thanks for the suggestion, I will try to do that someday
I have putted this on my playin list "Appalachia bit 10 of 12".
The town is so quiet !
Jay Rockefeller's country house is/was in Pocahontas County near to Greenbank.
ooooh this would be awesome to see & watch in detail.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@jamieround2072 between Bartow and Arbovale, on the left if you are goin southward.
Wonder if it's on the Christmas tour 🎄
@@samanthab1923 You made me to laugh.
Tru Keesey 😉
was in blue field not to long ago and did not get to stop here
I enjoyed this video very much ... lovely town with interesting homes. The stone walls give detail to the ambience of Bramwell. Do you plan to give us a bit of history in a video about Bluefield?
Thanks so much, we definitely plan on doing a Bluefield in the future
@@realappalachia Okay, looking forward to it. Thank you.
What's with Bluefield?
I love to follow your route on Google Maps. The satellite view really brings out the terrain, and also nearby coal mines. I would love it if you could swing by one of the old mines and active mines. West Virginia is one of the few "Free" states left.
I will try to do that sometime when I get access to do it, I think a lot of folks would like to see that probably
what do ya mean by 1 of the free states still left .................. a lot of ppl,. can & will split hair's & their own vision of what u mean..... LOVE TO KNOW WHAT U HONESTLY MEAN BY THIS....................... PLZZ & THANK'S !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What did you mean by "free"?
@@samanthab1923 He means no minorities where people are "free" to be racist douchebags.
I'd love to buy a home down in and around these parts.
This looks like a nice town, I love these videos. Keep making them. One thing I notice, even in this bigger and more prosperous looking town, why don’t we see any people walking around the downtown area, not even near the diner? There are not many cars about either. Do you try to visit at off times when there is little traffic?
What do people do for a living now? Whats the population? Some beautiful stone walls along with homes.
There's not a whole lot of industry in town but many can drive to Bluefield and even Princeton for work and those arent too terribly far away
@@realappalachia thanks
Real Appalachia Cool
Thanks for making this video. Can you tell us about blue stone? What is it--a kind of limestone? Why is it blue? Where is it quarried? Where is it used? Are any famous buildings made from it? Imagine if an entire city were built from it--all of the buildings in the city. It would give the city a distinctive look and feel.
So pretty 🤩
West VIRGINIA almost HEAVEN
Just curious, Is that dogs barking in the background? Or is that turkeys goblin in the background. Sounds like turkeys to me. But I'm sure I'm wrong. I hear the turkeys goblin in the background when you are walking through the downtown area.
abandoned houses, lol, theres still cars on the side of the road since before i was born in Iaeger.
That was a really great video. I enjoyed it, but wondering where are people? I don't see any activity at all, and it isn't a ghost town, so what gives I wonder ?
a couple of factors - it was a pretty windy and cold day so not many people were out plus it was an off time of day. Having said that, it is very seldom overly busy these days
This is pretty much what you see in Bramwell unless it's summer as they recently added cabins an trails for atv riders!
I was wondering the same thing LoL
2:36 my mom went to that school when they started desegregation. her black friend, my grandmas friends daughter, was stabbed.
How terrible
Are these two lane roads or one lane
Very narrow two lane
the further u get in the hill's & valley's of the town's & villages & smal tiney town's a lot of the rds,. were just 1 big wide lane cus they didn't have the $$$ to center line paint any of the rds., no matter the time frame / era................ i love the wide 1 laner's to be honest....... cus it's wayyyyyy smoother then the old cobble stone rds,. which mainly why i was told that was their up-graded version's of the cobble stone rds,..........
speaking of 'ol swinging walk bridges on any side of now a day rds., r any of them in really good shape & used for the public......?? or they all pretty shot to crap cus of age & wear........ WHO 1 st built 'em & why any clue's honestly..............??? & r any of them still around & in use still or in some sort of museaum of some sort ................??????? THERE USE TO BE 2 SWINGING WALK BRIDGES IN WOOD COUNTY Parkersburg wv........ we use to cross 'em back in the early 90's the creeks then use to be wide & deep !!!!!!!!!!!! not sure anything is left any more from em...............
Very few swinging bridges are usable these days at least in this area
There is one right after the one that had fallen apart that is usable! I've scared quite a few friends and sibling on the swinging bridge lol.
