But it seems to be much more a spiritual and philosophical question of why evil exists, and if it can possibly be justified through growth.
I agree that setting limits to wealth would be difficult however, I think an ethical and moral question comes to play when you're questioning the existence of billionaires. Is a billion dollars earned when using child labor? Exploitation? Could the billionaires of today have built their wealth without blurring the lines of ethics and morals? I think that's the more interesting question.
Also when people say "but thEy eArnEd iT" they're forgetting that (as you said) they exploit a lot of people and resources in the process and the systematic way in which they weed out competition. Moreover in many countries, the ultra rich pay lesser taxes (in ratio to their income ofc) as compared to the working class. Not to mention their political influence too so
@@shreyaanand9360 yes!! for real dude! and people wayyy underestimate how much money a billion dollars really is. There's less than 3,000 billionaires in the entire world!
If you support rules prohibiting the exploitation of people then you support rules prohibiting billionaires. There is no way anyone can become a billionaire without exploiting people. You are either against exploitation or you're not. Possessing a billion dollars is inherently unethical.
Annabeth yes! that’s what I was trying to say. If we had those rules we wouldn’t need wealth cap rules because then there would be little to no billionaires!
i love that you talked about america getting so much attention in the world because i'm from europe and i think about that a lot. why can i name 10 american fast food chains but not one national dish from uhhh el salvador for example. the imbalance is crazy
It’s also not good for us Americans because we are often viewed as dumb for not knowing much about other countries. It’s because we are totally absorbed with information from our own media that the only way to really know about current events in another country is by actively seeking out that information. It doesn’t just show up on Twitter, Facebook or Google for us unless we are searching it
@@clembark Right, so it's media is sadly skewed then to control thought. Not cool either. But also there isn't a general interest in the masses finding out more. That can also be perceived to be dumb too. But I understand living there, that the bustle and size is a clear obstacle just naturally. So big, It's a mini world in of itself.
Still, in America you can have access to all the information about every single country, nation, religion, languages, traditions, culture, food, habits in the world, and in many cases there are courses for every single of them in the best universities on the globe. Believe me, in certain countries it is still extremely hard, just see what is happening in a wealthy city like Hong Kong, and I don't even want to name countries like Iran, Syria etc etc etc etc etc. Also: I can name 10 American Nobel Prizes and none from El Salvador, Georgia, Gabon, Luxembourg etc (even though maybe there are some if I search on internet) I can name 10 American athletes that broke sports records, 10 American writers, 10 American outstanding actors, 10 American singers, 10 American generals, 10 American scientist, 10 American philanthropist, 10 American outstanding entrepreneurs etc etc. I can also name 10 ethnic groups that escaped wars based on religion that found a new home in America, and the name of 10 countries that were saved by America or were part of the Marshal plan during and after WW2. Yes, indeed the imbalance is crazy.
In recent times; there’s been so much focus on evolving technology but that hasn’t got us very far in terms of how we treat each other and our world. Hopefully in a century; we shift our focus to evolving spiritually
So, Buddhist meditation is sitting with "the feeling" until you notice that "the feeling" is changing of its own accord and the fundamental nature of everything is change and is impermanent and is emptiness. And the whole dream of your life that you thought was real was just a dream until you wake up and say, "Oh, yeah, it was just a dream. And now I'm awake." That's the first turning of the Dharma. This video is so satisfying and laid back, and doesn't even reflect half of Nathaniel's content quality, which is what I want to comment on. I just want to let you know, Nathaniel, that I am a huge fan of yours. The cinematography of your videos, the content you offer, how passionate you seem but especially your mind are incredibly inspiring. @@AlanisBraun ok thank you for replying. To be honest what I really like about Nathaniel is his ability to find the right words in the right contexts and also his uncommon vocabulary. I think I get a little bit underwhelmed when I read certain words used to express simple appreciations for a video.
"Should there be billionaires?" Is a pointless question. A better question might be "Can you ethically become a billionaire?" or "Should billionaires who exploit laborers and evade taxes be brought to justice?" or something like that. Every conversation that revolves around whether there should be a law against making a certain amount of money is missing the point.
i couldn't have put it in better words... and probably it would generate more conversation cause then you're dealing with real chances. In the world we live in rn and at capitalism's current stage, its basically unavoidable to have even richer ppl taking advantage of much more laborers, but trying to get together a plan to make it stop is a good way to spend a conversation
A better question is "Can you ethically steal the money from someone because you think he has 'too much' money ?" Theft is Theft. Leftist ideologues always start by doing hatred speech against the wealthy and end up by making camps and stealing everyone.
@@shakya00 wage theft in the US totals more than any other kind of theft. rich people and employers steal more money than anyone else. I'm not sure what point you're trying to make but the US houses like 25% of the world's prisoners and not anywhere near a quarter of the world's people. In this paradise of workers : wages are way lower than in USA, stagnant while they rise in your country and employment is high (before the crisis a record low of 7.8% since 2007 vs 6.9% now for the US in crisis...). In conclusion that's not the evil employer which spoil you but the State. The more the State is involved in the economy the more it hurts the people and especially the poorest who can't find easily a job in France because they are expensive, hard to fire, the laws are too complex and the economy too slow to create enough jobs.
Loved the discussion, these are the conversations my husband and I have in our spare time. Love that others are asking these questions and pondering the directions and impacts.
I like how interested you look when listening to Damon talking Really interesting video overall, it is nice to hear you guys opinions on these different topics !
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I would say it's a combination of the conversational style of videos from Damon paired with Nathaniel's style. It's thoughtful, entertaining and inviting. Also, I feel that there was a range of emotions that flowed with the conversation so both people moved from heavy focus, excitement, banter, philosophy... It was just great, okay!
It is so freaking true that we're not really using technology to our advantage. We use it to improve and speed up our personal daily lives, but other than that I feel like we really haven't done much to progress humanity. When Elon Musk created Space X there was no competition and NASA wasn't even doing too much to progress space travel. I think there needs to be more people like Elon who use the newest technology to move the needle forwards instead of using technology selfishly. Also, what a great conversation.
I feel so intellectually stimulated after both of yall's conversations on your channels. in the midst of a 6 month quarantine. that's a big deal. thank you
As much as I love Nathan! I felt he needed to let Damon speak more than himself. I felt it even more when Nathan: "Is there a storm coming??!" Damon: "I HOPE SOOO!" 😂😂😂 I laughed out loud while feeling bad for Damon!
I realized that I could listen to you both talk for hours! This was such a great video. I wish i could have conversations like that with people around here.
Damon hittin us casually with the ''the way out of the simulation is when we ALL realize we're in it'' - t r u t h Nathaniel please continue these kinds of talks, because they are soul nurturing, elevating LOVE
If you enjoyed the topics discussed in this video I highly recommend checking out The Midnight Gospel on Netflix. Or, alternatively, if you're more into reading: 'When Things Fall Apart' by Pema Chödrön, 'The Will to Power' by Friedrich Nietzsche, and 'The Consolations of Philosophy' by Alain de Botton.
I love, LOVE having these types of discussions! I think I reflect on these types of questions a lot, but it's so rare to actually talk about them with other people, so it's refreshing to hear your and Damon's perspectives.
I think the difference on a foreigner criticizing the US and a foreigner criticizing Argentina, for exemple, is the fact that everything that the US does, it affects the rest of the world, in a good but most commonly in a bad way, cause America comes always first, no matter if the progress for americans will mean the destruction of the rest of the world. By that being said, I think anyone should be defensive when someone else is talking about your country, but not Americans, cause what the US does is actually what is gonna rule what is gonna happen in the rest of the world, which means, we all should be criticizing America.
I think that’s true that what they do will impact central and South America. But I don’t think their actions will always impact the rest of the world. America is very powerful now but they have not always been and that can change
I agree with this but I see a huge difference in someone from a country the US heavily effects negatively criticizing the US and it’s international actions as opposed to someone from Western Europe or Canada making fun of the American health system, school shootings, the failures of the American education system, etc. (which I see so much of) when those things are 1. Not in control of the citizens because of our electoral system and 2. Negatively affect Americans more than they affect others. I get defensive about the latter but the former is completely justified imo.

Hi Nathaniel and Damon! I LOVED this video and watched it while drawing on my sketchbook :) I really enjoyed the conversation as it seemed a typical conversation I might have with my friends, and the variety of important/taboo/philosophical subjects was very nice! As an Italian and half-French girl I can confirm that I feel like I love more France than Paris itself, I think it is a wonderful country that gives its best in the most wild and rural areas. Lots of love from Milan! :)
I find extremely dizzying to think about the fact that most of us, especially during this time, have allocated a mental space (for me it's a big space lol) to think about things happening virtually. It's just so crazy that most of the time in a day I'm thinking about a conversation between two people I "know" virtually and about what the other people like me are talking about in a virtual discussion. My mind is occupied by things that don't exist outside my phone or computer. Like, in my mind, I live on the internet.

“What if it’s us controlling us? Somebody make this book!” Reminds me a lot of Interstellar. In the movie, (future) humans have evolved to the point that they have mastered the laws of physics and existed within five dimensions, possessing the ability to create wormholes and placing one near Saturn in order to give humanity a chance to save itself from their dying (present day) world.

What you said about the simulation creator(s) being us from the future reminds me of the scene from Interstellar where Cooper is in the 5-dimensional tesseract and is interacting with his past self and daughter through the bookshelf.
I AGREE SO MUCH WITH YOU I CANT-
Also when people say "but thEy eArnEd iT" they're forgetting that (as you said) they exploit a lot of people and resources in the process and the systematic way in which they weed out competition.
If we had those rules we wouldn’t need wealth cap rules because then there would be little to no billionaires!

i love that you talked about america getting so much attention in the world because i'm from europe and i think about that a lot. why can i name 10 american fast food chains but not one national dish from uhhh el salvador for example. the imbalance is crazy
i was thinking about this the other day! sometimes i'm more aware of what's going on in the US than what's going on in Europe
It’s also not good for us Americans because we are often viewed as dumb for not knowing much about other countries. It’s because we are totally absorbed with information from our own media that the only way to really know about current events in another country is by actively seeking out that information. It doesn’t just show up on Twitter, Facebook or Google for us unless we are searching it
@@clembark good point!
Also: I can name 10 American Nobel Prizes and none from El Salvador, Georgia, Gabon, Luxembourg etc (even though maybe there are some if I search on internet)
I can name 10 American athletes that broke sports records, 10 American writers, 10 American outstanding actors, 10 American singers, 10 American generals, 10 American scientist, 10 American philanthropist, 10 American outstanding entrepreneurs etc etc.
I can also name 10 ethnic groups that escaped wars based on religion that found a new home in America, and the name of 10 countries that were saved by America or were part of the Marshal plan during and after WW2.
Yes, indeed the imbalance is crazy.

IKR, I love that about these two!
Damon is living in the present, which is needed.
In recent times; there’s been so much focus on evolving technology but that hasn’t got us very far in terms of how we treat each other and our world. Hopefully in a century; we shift our focus to evolving spiritually
I could not agree more. We must evolve to become more empathetic and inclusive
Reyna Singh This omg I wish people understood and felt how important being empathetic is, even more so than technology or material things
I feel like I’ve just witnessed what the perfect date looks like. Cute.

I hope to see this comment and get reminded once again how you inspire others and that what you're doing is definitely worth it. this video is so comforting. The conversation, the atmosphere, the bg music. MWAH
What a wonderful way to put it
i couldn't have put it in better words... and probably it would generate more conversation cause then you're dealing with real chances.
If you want to talk about horrible "re-education" camps, look at prisons in the US, look at the 3 strikes law, and listen to people talk about their experiences in prison.
@@robw6202 I'm not American, i'm from the most taxed country on Earth....France ! We know here what is a thief. When the State steal you close to 50% of your salary before tax, it hurts and we get a lot of "protections" against evil employers which would be a wet dream for your AOC and co. Guess what ? In this paradise of workers : wages are way lower than in USA, stagnant while they rise in your country and employment is high (before the crisis a record low of 7.8% since 2007 vs 6.9% now for the US in crisis...). In conclusion that's not the evil employer which spoil you but the State. The more the State is involved in the economy the more it hurts the people and especially the poorest who can't find easily a job in France because they are expensive, hard to fire, the laws are too complex and the economy too slow to create enough jobs.

I like how interested you look when listening to Damon talking
Really interesting video overall, it is nice to hear you guys opinions on these different topics !
Also, if you ever wanna visit 📍Tours 🇫🇷, hit me up 😺
I thoroughly enjoyed this video.
I think you need to do some research on Elon. He isn't like Tony Stark, he's more like Thomas Edison.
Anyone else wish they were there to talk too. There were so many times when I wanted to interject like they could actually hear me lol
I feel like my personality is somewhere between Nathaniel Drew and Damon Dominique and this is like two sides of me having a conversation. 😆
I feel so intellectually stimulated after both of yall's conversations on your channels. in the midst of a 6 month quarantine. that's a big deal. thank you
also "watch me change my own mind" gave me a huge laugh. that's also rare these days.
As much as I love Nathan! I felt he needed to let Damon speak more than himself.

Nathan: "Is there a storm coming??!"
Damon: "I HOPE SOOO!" 😂😂😂
I laughed out loud while feeling bad for Damon!
I realized that I could listen to you both talk for hours! This was such a great video. I wish i could have conversations like that with people around here.

What you said about the simulation creator(s) being us from the future reminds me of the scene from Interstellar where Cooper is in the 5-dimensional tesseract and is interacting with his past self and daughter through the bookshelf.
