  • My name is Alex and I am recovering from Mental Illness; Depression and Anxiety to be precise. I waited so long to get it sorted that sometimes I worry I have messed up so many things - and then I realised I have so much life to live and so many things left to do. With Sertraline in hand I make the most of each day and plan to get better and better as time passes.
It's been a tough journey but if you are struggling right now, there is no need to be alone. This Channel has a community of people like you, ready to take control of their lives and live it to the fullest; you wouldn't be reading this right now if you weren't ready to do something right?!
Whilst I take Sertraline (Zoloft) this isn't a channel just about antidepressants, in fact I would rather you see if as a place you can come when you need reassurance about any aspect of your Mental Wellbeing.
You are doing great and whilst it might not seem like it you are taking steps forward. Watching this rubbish trailer for a start.

Me too, probably about 20 years with anxiety. I’ve started taking cold showers and have noticed a marked improvement. I don’t feel the fear as much and most often forget I get anxious. The theory behind the cold shower is the initial shock is like a panic attack that overtime you control (I don’t get that fast breathing now when entering the cold shower) so you stay in until you are breathing normally.
So when you are in a situation that would usually trigger anxiety you are better equipped to cope or not even get triggered in the first place.
Maybe it’s a placebo but that’s good enough for me if I’m not feeling anxious.

Great advice, one of many steps to take to get control of your condition. DO NOT resort to SSRI's unless you understand the problems of worse depression once you stop.

I'm really bad with anxiety for the last 2 months brought on by a bad experience with weed. I'm on my 18th day of sertraline but can't say I've noticed much. I'm on 50mg and am going to phone doc to see if dose should be increased. The last 2 months has been the most horrifying time of my life.... I just want 'me' back.
Thanks for posting these videos as they are very informative and reassure those who are starting an SSRI treatment.

Hey Chris, thanks for taking the time to comment. Sertraline (unfortunately) takes about 6 weeks to work. This is the same for any drug in it's class - SSRI - so day 18 is still quite soon in the process. I would think you will start to feel benefits in 2-4 weeks and whilst this might seem like a long way away I really do recommend sticking with it for now and reassess at the end of May. Are you doing anything else non-medical to help?

@@AlexRobbMentalHealth hi thanks for reply. Yeah I'm exercising every day, meditating and trying deep breathing exercises. I'm a newbie to meditation etc though. I've also cut out caffeine and alcohol and never touching weed again. Yeah I've heard it can take a bit of time for medication to start to work. I just hope it's the right one for me and that I won't have to try several SSRIs. Have you suffered with anxiety or was it mainly low mood for you?

Hiya Chris, I'm not trying to piggy back of Alex's hard work. His videos and presentation are brilliant but if you have the time it might be worth checking out my channel. I keep a regular vlog of my experience with anti depressants. The vlog isn't finished yet! I'm no doctor but I believe anti depressants will work differently for everyone. You're not alone in the struggles. Stay strong and keep on keeping on.
