  • At the Venice Film Festival, Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen and director Nikolaj Arcel discussed their latest film, 'The Promised Land', a historical drama set in the 18th century. They also addressed the question of diversity requirements in Hollywood and how they affect their creative choices. Arcel said that he was not opposed to diversity, but that he wanted to tell stories that were authentic to the Nordic culture and history. Mikkelsen agreed, saying that he was proud of his heritage and that he hoped to share it with the world through his films.

It's almost like because they're white and it is placed during 1750s Denmark they have to have some form of racism or some shit. Like if these woke ass journalists actually read history of any European country you'll find its roots in BEING enslaved by Africans and Middle Eastern nations and paid little to no attention to the slave trade. The fact people actually believe European countries were extremely racist in the 1700s is astonishing. The most racist people during that time WERE the very same people they claim were 'oppressed' then and are 'oppressed' today. There is SO much propoganda pushed by a small group of ignorant black people who claim to be fighting racism while they're the ones KEEPING IT ALIVE.

Diversity = Not white. This isn't complicated. That shouldn't be what it means, but it unfortunately is. And this is the problem. You cannot tell an authentic European historical story and cast it accurately and qualify for awards. But you could tell an authentic Japanese story and win all the awards. An authentic African story and win all the awards. They will never ask you to "diversify" a story set in ancient China, because it is already 100% "diverse" even though you are reality seeing one race of people. That is a double standard that needs to go away. It's beyond stupid, and nobody can mention it in public because dishonest weasels will call them racist. The insanity of Hollywood is why I recommend watching less movies and reading more novels. They're better anyway, and free from agendas for the most part.

They made a movie in my country about a woman rediscovering herself in her 50s, with a plot heavily attached to our culture and customs which I think is the reason why people liked it so much, nationally and internationally, and also the reason this movie went on film festivals around the world, earned a bunch of nominations and even won some of those.
Years later they made an American remake with a fancy American actress on front. They "adapted" the storyline and writing to fit American audiences' standards (god forbid them of doing anything for anybody else) meaning they moved the whole story to an American city, but while also trying to keep the "spicy input" of our culture (it's not Mexico, sorry for misleading you), a mixture that resulted in a box office flop. I'm sure Americans were confused about choosing to digest the movie as an artistic representation of the culture they were born in, inviting them to celebrate themselves, against an artistic representation of a culture unknown to them, inviting them to bask in other people's lifestyles. For me it takes a different mindset to watch national, foreign or Hollywood blockbuster films. It would be very weird for me watching a french film about burgers and semiautomatic weapons.
Both movies, original and remake, have the same name. The original is the one that succeeded and gave birth to the unsuccessful remake, but guess which one pops up if I type in the name on Google.
Now, feel free to come here and talk to us about diversity and cultural appropriation.

However, I hope directors, casting, producers, whoever, would go and say out aloud, "I didn't get a diverse cast because I don't give a flying f about diversity. I choose the actors better suited for the roles. It is MY job to do that. If somebody wants a movie to answer to their ideals, they can make their own movie". And, by the way, whatever competition demands compliance or imposes restrictions to movie makers - or any artist, for that matter - should be left to themselves and be ignored by artists and public.

The new rule for films is that they must be inclusive and diverse with characters and set crew and others involved in making a movie. The movie Promised Land with Mads Mikkelsen is about class structure and saving a Romany girl from racism as part of the story. That it is about Danish people of Denmark in the 1700’s there was not a lot of diversity, or that it was not about the slave trade at that time, because there was a slave trade. But this is not a story about that.
So, what does a totally inclusive and diverse team look like? Will it need to have a white, black, brown, Asian, Indian, Arab, every other person the planet, man or woman, a trans, someone with dwarfism, a disabled person, a deaf person, a blind person, a deaf and blind person who is a mute as well. The list is endless.
Where does creative license fit in story telling? The fact is that film making must fit the new rules to be in the running for an Oscar. Does getting an Oscar mean anything really, is it relevant. Do people want to get awards just because they fit a check box?
I loved the debate about Snow White with the replacement of the dwarves, and a Little person stated that those are the only roles for people with dwarfism.
I mean there are black, white, brown, gay, lesbian, and trans people with dwarfism and not one them got a look in. Stating that there aren’t many roles for them, they are not going to be the leading man or woman, the love interest or hero. So, inclusivity is blind to the reality of the human experience and discriminatory.
Seriously the woke are so boring. That everyone must have a pronoun is vile, people must do it to keep a job. Tragic to have to play along, that is not true acceptance of others. It is lip service.

i agree with the overall sentiments from Mads and the director Nikolaj Arcel. However in the 1750´ies Denmark was a slave trading nation and the danish royal court did have slaves of color so she isnt "the only person of color in the whole of Denmark at the time". But as Arcel says they where very few of them, and the movie does indeed put a focus on superstiton and racism about the color of skin. But again this is sort of like "a western based in Denmark" about the cultivation of the danish heath, a barren part of the contry in the 1750ies - its a plot point, but not the overall story.

The reporter's question was evidently about how they plan to compete with films considered diverse, like "Parasite," which he specifically mentioned. The concern raised was whether a movie with an all-Nordic cast would receive the same recognition and be seen as diverse enough. If people could approach the topic of 'diversity' with less emotional reaction, they might have been able to better grasp the reporter's perspective.
