Helplines should have a rule to protect staff and volunteers from notorious, abusive and rude callers. Over here our healthcare workers are usually protected. A sign is put up to inform patients and visitors to at least be polite and show some respect to healthcare workers. It is against the law to be notorious and rude or abusive to healthcare workers and they are liable for prosecution if they continue to behave in such a manner. This is especially so for volunteers. While staff are paid to do their work, volunteers are not and there is no justification for them to work for free yet be subjected to such treatment. Any organizations that do not have this basic law should seriously remove their older staff for refusing to change!
