One belief that the extremely wealthy New York City mobster "Dave the Dude" holds dear is that the apples he purchases from Apple Annie, the drunken street vendor, would bring him good fortune. Annie tells the dude that his most recent acquisition is very fortunate. Then he meets Elizabeth "Queenie" Martin, a friend's daughter who was just killed for having large debts to the wrong people. Martin owned a speakeasy. To help him pay the $20,000 he is owing, Queenie promises to give him $5 every week from her cashier's paycheck. Instead, he chooses to turn Queenie into a nightclub star after accepting Annie's claim. He succeeds, much to the surprise of his right-hand man, "Joy Boy," and after two years, right before Prohibition expires, Queenie is able to settle all of her father's debts.

Produced and directed by Frank Capra, Pocketful of Miracles is a 1961 American comedy film that stars Bette Davis and Glenn Ford and was shot in Panavision. The 1929 Damon Runyon short tale "Madame La Gimp" served as the inspiration for Robert Riskin's script for the 1933 movie Lady for a Day, which Hal Kanter and Harry Tugend adapted. One of two movies that Capra initially helmed and then recreated was the 1933 original, along with Broadway Bill (1934) and its remake Riding High (1950).
The movie served as Capra and Thomas Mitchell's last collaboration. It was Ann-Margret's first time in a movie.
An Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor went to Peter Falk.
