- A little departure from showing my usual classic offroad solo dirt bikes to this time take a look at a few Classic Offroad Sidecars or "Sidecarcross" as it is sometimes known around the UK.
I used to ride solos mx in schoolboy mx in the late seventies and also sidecar mx later ( Norton 850 wasp outfits) as a passenger from Reading Berkshire with a friend for a few years who had some success in the late eighties
That was a quick 26 minutes! I remember seeing the sidecars at Hillhouse Farm (near Linlithgow) in the late 70s, would love to see them again. I wonder if anybody in Scotland still has one?
I won two champions in canada, was in the movie,on eny sunday( the next chapter) and inducted into the maritime motosports hall of fame,I loved raceing sidecars, thanks for putting this video up
Ya never in America:( lol
I wish they did this in the USA . But we have great dirt bike tracks .
There is still a small, but dedicated Sidecar MX group in Los Angeles, CA USA. They are still racing motocross sidecars here in the USA.
Great video chris used live down rd from this place as kid I also used watch there in the woods twinshock trials they had in.70s early 80s great natural track love seing these racing videos and classic vintage bike in the paddock etc
Thanks for the info
At a guess I'd say it's a virago motor
The nr.18 V-twin engine is a Yamaha xv1000 tr1 1981-1986
Thanks Frank . . . as I said I wasnt sure but thanks for the info and for taking the time to watch.
Happy to help, i enjoy your videos and the story@@monticlassictv
I used to watch these guys with a mixture of awe and 'mad as a box for frogs' 😆 The Wasps are beautifully engineered machines. A friend, John Young, who does all those endurance events put a Triumph Trident motor in one for a Paris Dakar type thing, madness lol. Thanks for the video Chris.
Hi Sophie we used to have racing sidecarcross here in Scotland many years ago but their only raced in the south of England now. But they were exciting to watch although almost all of the unit's at that time were powered by the 850 Norton Commando engine which ran on Methanol.
@@monticlassictv Ahhh, the smell of methanol and Castrol R. Now you've got me all nostalgic 😄
I raced AMCA all over the country and there was usually sidecars at the meetings. Sad to hear they've become so rare now. Yes, Commandos running 920 kits. I have a spare Norton race engine and gearbox and after my recent ride on a TR6 Metisse I'm very tempted to try and build something similar myself. My partner and I run a tiny company making parts as one offs and new spares mainly for classic Nortons. Hopefully the Telford show will happen next year. I'll say hi if I spot you.
@@monticlassictv don't think they ever ran on methanol Chris.I raced a750 Norton then an 850 Weslake in the late "70s. I'm sure methanol would be against the rules. 5* leaded was the stuff.
Fantastic Chris! Thank you for all the great vids!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for taking the time to view.
