I had 2 paramedic firefighters save my life 2 years ago when I was having a heart attack. Their quick thinking and rapid response prevented me from losing consciousness and my heart from stopping. They transferred me to the ambulance paramedics who got me to emergency and saved my life. I would not be here today if not for these real life heroes!
My dad was an assistant fire chief and started out as a firefighter and worked his way up the ranks over 30 years. We had a scanner at home and could hear him when he was on duty. I miss him so much. RIP Dad. 🙏🏼😇
My father was a fireman. He always said: the most important aspect of a firemen is to be able to carry a coworker with all his equipment on. Imagine his face when after 15 years of being a fireman they hired a women on their squad who couldnt even carry a teenager (true story).

I learned the same thing in EMT training. It jives with why I spent much of my adolescence and young adulthood as one of the go to babysitters in my rather large family. When I was little, my youngest sister at the time nearly died of asthma several times before she was even five. Combine that with an incident I witnessed in the Infant ICU, an infant's cry doesn't bother me at all. It means they're breathing and have the strength to cry. My calm demeanor calms the baby down as well. It also helps with adults in an emergency. Nothing calms people down, of any age, more than someone who is not just calm(which can be infuriating, depending on the situation) but knows what to do and communicates it clearly.
That's often true in Psychiatry too. And probably in police work. As long as someone is shouting, they are hoping to be heard and there's a chance that if you do respond and say the right thing calmly, you can de-escalate the situation. It's when they stop talking that they start an all or nothing physical attack. And I would imagine in hostage situations as long as you can keep the person talking, then the same hope is true. When they stop answering the phone or coming to the window or whatever, a decision Point has been reached... I would imagine it's true of animals as well, especially dogs who bark as a warning but stop barking when it's time to attack.
Two firefighters helped me after I collapsed. Although I regained consciousness, I couldn't stand up. They had me up on my feet like I was a feather and carefully sat me down. After a thorough assessment, they advised me to see my doctor the next day. Done! Forever grateful. 🙏

Teaching 15-16 year olds little techniques like this, along with basic first aid before they graduate, would really help make society that little bit more resilient in the face of crisis. (not advocating children rush into burning buildings, but knowledge like this, could be the difference between life and death, if you needed to get someone out of immediate danger, or out of a precarious situation ASAP)
I tried that with my husband he weighs 200 pounds and I weigh 116 I broke my back trying to save him so I grabbed his hair and his arms and pulled him out of a house fire and lost my pants in the process he started laughing

The thing people don’t understand about full time firemen is, they’re in incredible shape and always training. You actually have to be able to do a dead man’s lift! That’s picking up a totally unconscious person all while wearing 50-70 pounds of gear! Oh and there’s a fire raging behind you. True warriors! Much respect to these guys

Except for big urban departments that are extremely competitive in their hiring... most firemen are fat, lazy p.o.s. who like to brag about how they may be fat but can outwork gym bodies (which is not true). I was trapped in one corner of the room that had not yet been circum to the fire...I then passed out from lack of oxygen and woke up on the shoulders of the Fireman running through the Blazing Flames to get me to safety... Oh and he did that five times for five children. 4/5 Survived... Only lost 1

I’m a fire chief’s daughter & grew up wanting to be a fire fighter. I would not be able to do that. My daddy told me I could be the wife of a fire fighter or the mama of a fire fighter but I could never be a fire fighter. He wasn’t being mean, he in fact hired three first female in the department. He just knew a 5’2” 100 pound girl would never be able to do the work of a fire fighter. We all have a roll. I’m thankful for the first responders.
I dated a fire fighter.. he was such a sweetheart. If youd ask him he was always wanting to be the 1st on the scene. He was such a wonderful man. He was always thinking about putting others 1st before himself he was a selfless person. He was loved by many. Rip J.D. we miss you sooo

No really. They are usually just people who dropped out of highschool or didn't go to college, and we're looking for a path in life. If you can get accepted into one few week course, you can have a highly respected career. That's very appealing to a lot of people.

Not all of them, of course, but of course it’s appealing to people who don’t have a degree or a skill. These are whole career paths laid out that anyone who can pass the training can make a life out of. What, did you think they all did it because they are all heroes or something?

Today i remembered this video when my sister passed out while we were on a walk and i used the 2nd technique to get her as close to the road as i could so the ambulance could stop right beside us. Had to find this video to thank you for teaching me this.

I was trapped in one corner of the room that had not yet been circum to the fire...I then passed out from lack of oxygen and woke up on the shoulders of the Fireman running through the Blazing Flames to get me to safety...
Oh and he did that five times for five children. 4/5 Survived... Only lost 1

I’m a fire chief’s daughter & grew up wanting to be a fire fighter. I would not be able to do that. My daddy told me I could be the wife of a fire fighter or the mama of a fire fighter but I could never be a fire fighter. He wasn’t being mean, he in fact hired three first female in the department. He just knew a 5’2” 100 pound girl would never be able to do the work of a fire fighter. We all have a roll. I’m thankful for the first responders.
