  • Not much has changed since the last Tacoma TRD Pro I had. It's an excellent off-roader and I always love putting something this capable to the test!

    Good review, as always. Would like to have heard more about the shocks and suspension.

      Thanks, and that's a great idea. Essentially the suspension is what sets this truck apart from it's competitors. I actually did a story on them a couple years ago.
      news.pickuptrucks.com/2020/09/whats-so-special-about-the-2020-toyota-tacoma-trd-pros-fox-shocks.html
      Here are some specs for you:
      Front: 1.5" taller from tuned coil springs, 2.5" Fox shocks with 8 bypass zones (5 compression, 3 rebound), 0.7" more travel in than standard Tacoma (maybe more for 2022 as it has new forged upper control arms), Front sway bar is slightly larger to help compensate for the softer tuned suspension
      Rear: 0.5" lift from tuned leaf springs, 2.5" Fox shocks with piggy-back reservoir with 11 bypass zones (7 compression, 4 rebound), 0.8" more travel than standard Tacoma.
      Tires are 265/70R16 (30.6" x 10.4") Goodyear Wrangler Territory ATs, which is interesting because the 4-Runner TRD Pro I'm testing right now has 265/70R17 (31.6" X 10.4") Nitto tires.

    This was an excellent demonstration of the crawl control features!!!
    I own a 2021 Tacoma TRD 4x4 premium and took it for some serious offroad, 16 hours to cover 20 miles very rough terrain. Incredible off road capable vehicle.
    Love mine.
    Did modified the standard suspension, Bilstein 6112 in the front and Bilstein 5100 with an Icon AAL in the back.
    Also installed a 9500lb winch in the front.
    BFG KO2 tyres 265/75/16.

    Even with all the ABS noise which I like, it gets the job done. It still needs better tires for the money but it's amazing what it can do.
    Love that color, not a big fan of the hood scoop.
    Off the showroom floor the Tacoma and the 4runner Pros are only a set of serious tires away from offroad perfection.
    Great review and offroad testing EA.

      Thanks for sharing! I agree that the computer systems that work with the ABS get the job done. Toyota has the best system I've tested, but I can't wait for the 4-Runner and Tacoma to get the ABS that's in the Tundra. It's much smoother, quieter and faster.

    This review concentrated on the efficacy of the suspension and the off-road capability, which is formidable.
    However, in regards to power, this truck has the 3.5, which is the same basic design/configuration as the GM 3.6 and Chrysler 3.6. What is your opinion of these three engines, comparatively, in a light-truck application?

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  2 роки тому

      Great question and something I hadn't thought of before. I'd say it depends on the application, I don't like these V6's in the bigger/off-road applications. The power and torque come on at higher rpm. While I don't like the V6 much in the Colorado, in the Blazer the V6 does pretty well. Same for the Wrangler/Gladiator and Tacoma, I don't like the V6 much in those applications but they were fine in the charger, minivans, Camry and Rav 4.

    I put my 2020 trd pro in “crawl mode”and went up a similar hill. Went upward about 3 feet and it just stops and holds. I tried all the speed settings (1-5) with no luck.
    Took to dealer and they said everything checks fine. It did the same thing next trip out. I heard other pro owners having same problem.

      Thanks for commenting, I've had others mention this issue in previous videos. I haven't experienced it at all.

      This happened on another review channel that was comparing the TRD Pro versus the Ford Ranger FX4. Upon further investigation (not in that particular video) It was discovered that Toyota’s crawl control needs to be at least in setting number three of five for up hill climbs.
      Until the crawl control system is updated to the one that’s in the Tundra, the engine will not rev high enough to produce enough torque for the crawl control to make steeper climbs in less than the third setting of the crawl control. Hope that clarifys some things.
      It did seem to work here, but perhaps just the right line was taken not to hang it up too much.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  2 роки тому +1

      Interesting, the climb in this test has spots that are more than a 45% grade, there are certainly steeper grades, but this is steeper than it looks on camera.

    it is interesting to see reviews comparing two cars, or a certain top list, maybe a distribution by places

      I agree! I typically only have one vehicle at a time and do most things on the channel solo

      I actually quite like the color! I think I've changed over the years, most vehicles are grey scale or red. Now when I get something different I tend to like it much more than I did when I started this line of work.

    Nice review! I wanted to get this model of Tacoma I like the way they look the 3.5 motor could definitely be better as in performance but reliability seems to be good on it & mine is 6-speed manual & after them making it so many years hopefully I got a good one even tho it's built in Guanajuato Mexico 🤔

    How did you like the performance of the front locker, the rear locker used in 2HI & 4HI, and terrain management features that can be used in 2HI & 4HI?

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  Рік тому

      No front locker, just rear (and no center differential). MTS is ok, but between each of the modes I don't notice a lot of difference. 3 modes is probably optimal In my opinion, one with lots of computer intervention, one with none, and one in-between.

    What do you think is the best all-around used mid-size vehicle: For hunting and camping trips into remote areas, I need it to handle trails rates 6/7 on the rating system (shelf roads climbing over rocks 18 to 24", I am fine with adding skid plates, suspension upgrades, and a winch, I would like it to comfortable tow 5K or more, lockers. budget 30K
    Prior vehicles were Tacomes and 4runners, all lifted 2.5 inches

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  2 роки тому

      Mid-size isn't my class for a few reasons. I'll take a shot at answering your question anyway. For towing 5k or more I would take the Ranger over the Tacoma. Off-road the TRD Pro will be smother, but both can get you to the same places. If you're upgrading suspension anyway the Ranger FX4 or Tacoma TRD Off-Road might be better options than the Tremor and TRD Pro respectively. The Colorado ZR2 is much better mannered on road than the Tacoma and probably tows better (I towed with a canyon diesel not a ZR2), but the Ranger has more power and better response. Ultimately test drive them all and see what you like the most, my opinion is just one in a sea of millions and yours will probably differ from mine.

      I use my Taco for hunting in remote areas and some off road fun. It take me everywhere I wanna go. One of my main reasons to choose the Tacoma TRD 4x4 was the positioning of the rear shocks, the lower attachment. All the other trucks except jeeps the shock mount is sticking out under the rear axle, bad rocky areas will bend the crap out of it.
      The 2021 Tacoma TRD 4x4 premium for me is a beast in the Bush.
