Additional note: if you have a male doggo that you’re making this for... you should cut out a little semi-circle on the tummy piece, before sewing the two pieces together 😉 or make the front/tummy piece shorter! if the fabric is stretchy, you don’t need to worry much about fraying.
I have a hairless cat and you never realize how cold the house can sometimes get until your nakey. Dog sweaters don't really fit her right and they are never long enough. I used to cut up and use little baby jumpers but I have to try this now!
I must say, only thing I would do differently (as I make dog jumpers for my neighbourhood dogs all day every day) if you have a male dog you may want to make the tummy piece shorter, probably to end just after the ribs.... my first attempt at something like this was fine until my German shepherd pissed all over it then ran it dripping wet through the house 😂👌
You should do a romper! Rompers are fun but they can be really expensive. Loved the video. I don't think my dog would like a sweater, but his feet do get overly icy in the winter, so he might need boots, which I'll buy or make. (I live in the US, so I have a little time.)
Thank you so much Annika for being an inspiration for people with chronic illnesses, or people that just want to start a channel! You are a trooper and you are soo strong even through chemo, and you still manage to put out amazing videos on UA-cam!!! You have inspired me to maybe start my own channel( if I can find a good way to film on my iPhone, I don't have any good cameras!)and to sew things out of my comfort zone! I have been sewing since I was 7, and you just help me improve and learn new things that no one else has ever taught me! I also love how active you are with your fans! You have responded to me 3 times via Instagram direct message!! Thank you for being a great person Annika!!
You made the best video on making a dog pattern with sleeves that I've seen. Your explanations are very clear and easy to follow. Thank you so much for posting this video. Now I know what to do with the cashmere sweater I bought at the thrift store that was too small for me but I just couldn't pass it up because the fabric felt sooooo nice AND it was on sale for half-price!
A little tip, if you want to make the sweater longer make sure the belly piece still ends around the pups ribs so that if they have to pee they don't pee on the sweater. I work at a dog store that sells sweaters and that's a huge selling point!
One thing I've noticed with professionally made dog clothes is that you'll want to shorten the tummy piece by 4-6 inches so that they won't pee all over it when you're out on walks (especially in the case of male dogs). I've also seen large button holes stitched into the top about 2-3 inches from the collar to slip the leash through, which allows their collar/harness to be worn underneath the sweater.
s3-sa-east-1.amazonaws.com/loja2/3cf31131c184d1358688b0795f9ed894.png This pattern is the prettiest~ I've always wanted to make one myself because here where I live the ones that are for sale are too bright colored (the Slytherin green is so saturated and strong ç_ç) and the stripes and too big, they're kinda ugly :( and the ones like this one from the picture are very expensive. and Annika has the best sewing tutorials, they're very well explained and simple to understand. It would be awesome if she did it.
also, knitted jumpers became huge like this www.romwe.com/Cable-Knit-Loose-Wine-Red-Sweater-p-124010-cat-684.html?url_from=usplaRKNI150811210&gclid=CjwKEAjw8da8BRDssvyH8uPEgnoSJABJmwYokALlZulBz3Ed55X30pvV5OGITlwUEEcioDXeo3ZbdRoCvYPw_wcB I was wondering if you could find some way of making them maybe out of an old knitted blanket
dear annika... I just wanted to leave you this message because I wanted to say you have been a huge inspiration to me... I started watching your videos about a month ago and I have seen all of your videos and after that I got a sewing machine for my birthday... I have made two circle skirts and two square circle skirt but I turned one of them into a dress... lol... I am now fifteen and am working my way up to make my sewing skills great... thank you so so much for inspiring me
I bought a dog shirt pattern on an impulse at a craft store just to come home and find out that the measurements for the dogs were not big enough! So I’m incredibly thankful for this video! I’m going to make a cute tshirt for my dog with these instructions! Thank you so much! 🎉🎉🎉🐶🐶🐶 also your doggo is SO CUTE AND SUCH A GOOD DOGGO
This Make Thrift Buy is barking mad. I woof do this but I don't have a dog. I think Annika should take a bow-wow, this is an incredibly hard Make Thrift Buy. Paws off to anyone who will yell at me for these puns. Her diys arf amazing, and I canine believe she is this talented. Alright I'm done.
You did a wonderful job. Thankyou for being do detailed it really helps me as I’m starting and have made one dog pullover I believe I am doing well. So much to learn and your video is awesome ❤️
Now I want a sewing machine! This is easy, smart and so cute! Really liked how you used a marker instead of a pen or pencil (like others tend to do), which makes it difficult to see no matter how big the screen is.
Annika, you are very smart! I've never seen anyone 'measure' a dog like that for a pattern. Very impressive and I can see how well your pattern and final sweaters fit so well! Excellent video too! Thank you for sharing!
Edit: English subs are done! Help me add captions in other languages if you speak English & another language, by going here: ua-cam.com/users/timedtext_video?v=HcrErt9zaO8&ref=share
Thanks so much for this, again! I made one of these with your tutorial for my old dog before she passed a while ago and now my puppy has allergies and the vet told me to MAKE (Yes! Don't you love it when your vet understand your pet AND you?!) her a sweater with LONG sleeves (so she can't itch her armpits). This is exactly what I needed. Thank you again.
Doggie sweater looks really sharp (and the dog is adorable and so sweet). Thanks for sharing. This is just what I needed. Your video looks so professional, that is why I subscribed. Looking forward to more Thriftiness!
Annika I love your videos I'm 11 and I love to sew and I look at your videos to learn how to make dresses or skirts ,ect. I love your make ,thrift ,buy videos I love you so much if you replay my comment I'm going tone so happy
my mum and I make our dog costumes for the local carnivals, this year we had a vegas theme so he was a Card shark (literally a shark, with playing cards all over him) It's super easy as he already has a couple of coats we can use as template, so we just lay those over the fabric to trace and go from there usually We've done a bird one, a tutu, Dogfish, Sniffer dog (fluorescent jacket with plastic noses all over it), priest, all to match our themes (can't remember the bird one but the others were granny ballet, penguins, air hostesses and nuns) and luckily both our current dog and our old one are/were super tolerant of their crazy owners and just love all the attention they get
A lot of dog-to-dog communication is done non-verbally. In a situation like a dog park, dogs communicate mainly though body language, a huge part of which is through the ears. So its usually in the dog's best interest of he/she doesn't like hoods. But doggy ears do get cold, so some dogs love wearing hoods at home or in the garden.
You inspired me to start sewing and so I am learning. When you said that sewing machine was what you learned on that's what I'm learning on now so thought that was cool
You are amazing. Thank you. I had been trying to figure out how to measure and make a pattern in 3 sections like you did. I have been driving myself mad trying to out where to put the arm, shoulder ,seam. My dog has a broad pitbull chest so everything always ride down her chest and I have to pull them back up. I've been trying to make her something that fits, so thank you so much for the pattern. I like how far back the arm seams are. Genius!! Haha . Thanks again
My dachshund is in my profile picture. Most of his fur is about a half inch long, so he gets pretty cold in the winter. He already has a sweater we picked up from Target but it doesn't fit him perfect. I know how much I procrastinate, so maybe if u start this now it will be finished by winter!
Its so funny how the world is so different, in Australia your temperature is below freezing and I'm here in Ontario Canada sweating buckets at almost 40 degrees Celsius
I have rehabilitated dogs in Flagstaff, AZ and Phoenix. Most dogs just don't like their paws to be extremely hot or extremely cold. Baby shoes work just fine to solve this problem and are pretty inexpensive.
I want to do this in memory of my father-in-law. He had a great idea of getting thrifted kids clothes and turning them into dog clothes and selling them. He was really excited about the idea for a long time. While watching this I just kept thinking about how much I wanted to be able to go to his house and show it to him. Thank you for this tutorial. He would have loved it.
you're such an inspiration, honestly you're one of my favorite people! just with your skill at sewing and your encouragement and tutorials, I've been learning to sew. And your fashion sense is also an inspiration for me! Thank you sew much for your pawsome videos, each one feels like a gift 😘🐾
This is going to be perfect for my 2 chihuahuas! Especially when I have a toddler that grows too much lol. Thanks so much! If you dont have a measuring tape just use a piece of string or scrap material and fold twice to divide by 4. Also boy dogs NEED more allowance for the tummy area so make sure you take that into consideration or you'll have a messy eww sweater for every walk.
I did this on my obese cat, but I didn't feel like doing math so I cut two holes in a bandana with skulls on it and I also didn't feel like sewing so I just forced her into it then safety pinned the back, it's a little (very) tight and she looked like a 400 pound woman trying to fit into size 2 pants. I have to drive her to therapy every week and I lost a lot of blood. Good DIY btw, keep up the good work!
your dog is so gosh darn adorable omg!! looks a lot like my pup haha!! do you know what breed she is? we're trying to figure out ours and all we've been able to agree on so far is "terrier mutt" LOL
There is a soooo much easier way of doing this! Most of the sewing pattern books in craft stores have pet patterns in them! I had a mini Weiner dog who was always cold when I took him out in the winter time! So I bought one of these sewing patterns out of a McCalls book. It's for dogs & cats & it has 4 sizes in the envelope! It also gives instructions on how to adjust it...but these patterns will fit dogs from Maltese to Grate Danes! You don't have to go through all this extra measuring! The pattern is one piece! You cut it out sew it around the edges & put in one button hole & sew on one button! No leg holes at all! If your creative you can make it reversible & do all sorts of things with the pattern! You can even use sweater fabric, fleece, Denim, corduroy any thing you want. This pattern here is way to much work. It took me about a half hour for the entire coat. It fits under the tummy and covers most of their legs. The pattern requires a tie or elastic piece under the tummy. It keeps the cold and breezes out and you don't need to cut anything extra for boy dogs. I've also made money with this pattern. Why anyone would go to this length for a pet sweater is beyond me. Especially when there is a so much easier way. Yes. You can use your oldT shirts ad sweaters. This pattern makes it all so much easier and quicker to make and it looks very nice. And the dog or cat doesn't have to stand around to be fitted. It doesn't have to be pulled over their heads, which dogs don't like any way , you don't have to struggle getting the dogs or cats legs through the arm holes because it doesn't have any. You make it as warm as you want with your choice of fabric. I even monogrammed some I made for friends.
She means divide the measurement by four. If the measurement is 12 inches, you would dived that by four and get 3 because 4 goes into 12 three times. (4+4+4=12)
Nicole Navarro let’s say it measured 10in around the collar , when you divide it by 4 it equals 2.5in then when you unfolded it’s going to total up to 5inches, since you’re gonna cut two pieces of fabric and sew then together it’s going to equal back to 10inches
Additional note: if you have a male doggo that you’re making this for... you should cut out a little semi-circle on the tummy piece, before sewing the two pieces together 😉 or make the front/tummy piece shorter! if the fabric is stretchy, you don’t need to worry much about fraying.
Awwwww cute dog
Thank goodness I read this part!!!! Lol! Awesome. Keep going. Dog hats please?????!!!! With ear holes as well or optional.... Tricky... Cara Scotland
i'm so surprised by how well ella stood for you that's awesome
I was about to comment the same :) she was really calm

Omg! Ella is so good! She stays still when you measure her and that's so adorable!
Every time you measure her, she has this distinct look of "What are you doing? I better getting treats for this.."
she hated it hahahaha.

I love border terriers and border terrier crosses. Ella is lovely and the jumper you made her is also very lovely.

Annika Victoria, what a beautiful name! Thank you very much!!! This is the best explanation for DIY dog sweater.

OMG ME TO sewing is my favorite thing in the worl sand I get tutorials from Annika she is my fav youtuber ever I'm 11 to
I love Annika's sewing tutorials too, and I'm 12.
my mum and I make our dog costumes for the local carnivals, this year we had a vegas theme so he was a Card shark (literally a shark, with playing cards all over him) It's super easy as he already has a couple of coats we can use as template, so we just lay those over the fabric to trace and go from there usually
We've done a bird one, a tutu, Dogfish, Sniffer dog (fluorescent jacket with plastic noses all over it), priest, all to match our themes (can't remember the bird one but the others were granny ballet, penguins, air hostesses and nuns)
and luckily both our current dog and our old one are/were super tolerant of their crazy owners and just love all the attention they get
I wonder if I could get my cat to wear one of these.....
Most cats will get dress up if they want to
The most my cat will tolerate is a collar haha
+Maryam Asfari My cat teached himself to get his collar off so we just gave up
mine wouldnt even wear a collar...
My cat chester let's me put clothes on him in exchange for treats, but he's usually only wearing the clothes long enough for a cute pic/vid
This is the quality content I needed. Ella is such a good doggo.
idk why but i found the shots of you measuring your dog extremely hilarious xD the sweater are super cute though! :)
lol me too. idk why, she's just so cute.
SHE IS SO GOOD. ELLA IS SO BEHAVED !!!

Good DIY btw, keep up the good work!
tbh i'm never going to make a dog sweater because my dog lives in far north queensland, but i just watched this because your voice is so calming
your dog is so gosh darn adorable omg!! looks a lot like my pup haha!! do you know what breed she is? we're trying to figure out ours and all we've been able to agree on so far is "terrier mutt" LOL
Yep we call ours a terrier mutt too hahaha. Maybe border terrier mixed with jack russell but we have nooooo idea :P
+Annika Victoria My dog is like yours but grey and blue and her ears are triangular and long
+Annika Victoria Btw can u make demon horns or demon wings for dogs and humans?
+Cas Asa I have a dog that looks like Annika's too and my dog is a dachshund/ terrier mix
Your dog is so calm! I made a sweater for my dad's dog some time ago, measuring him was an absolute hell XD
my dog would never sit still for this
There is a soooo much easier way of doing this!
I feel like this is just a math lesson
Hey Annika, have you ever thought about getting a rolled hem foot? I have one and it makes hemming circular edges on things like skirts SO easy!
Ooooh thank you for the tip! :)
My fog would never sit still for the mesureing
Fog is pretty hard to measure..
just eyeball it ;D
the puns in the description omg I rate 10/10
Oh. My. Gosh. Shut. Up.
This is so cute!!!!!
You have such a patient dog! She's so cute.
sorry what do you mean whit divided whit 4?
She means divide the measurement by four. If the measurement is 12 inches, you would dived that by four and get 3 because 4 goes into 12 three times. (4+4+4=12)
Why divide by 4? Why not divide by 2, since it's folded in half?
Nicole Navarro let’s say it measured 10in around the collar , when you divide it by 4 it equals 2.5in then when you unfolded it’s going to total up to 5inches, since you’re gonna cut two pieces of fabric and sew then together it’s going to equal back to 10inches
