- Hello UA-camrs! The British Rowing Trials episode is finally here. Been great training up to now. All that is needed is to put what has been going on in training into the 5000m row on the water in Yambo #5. As always I appreciate the support and excited to share the journey with the Yamsqaud! Enjoy!
Thanks to All Mark One for some sweet footage too!!

Nothing left in the tank there. No matter what the time was, you gave that everything, great work.
Enough about you, this morning I PB’d my 10,000m at 40.48
I’m over the moon for a 61 year old who’s only been rowing a year.
Seriously though, thanks for the inspiration.
Excellent job Colin!
Yay Cam! You did awesome and well done on the PB!
For the squeaky gates I spray some silicone spray on the gate side of my oar collars and it makes it nice and smooth and quiet. I hate when they squeak I can’t focus and I just end up rowing home to fix it if I forget to spray.
For sure! My silicone spray bottle had dissappeared to sort it out and haven't ordered new one! 😂
Your positive attitude is terrific. You are such an inspiration! You continue to show that achieving top performance requires the combination/balance of the physical, intellectual, and emotional. Best of luck to you Cam!
Well done Cam, you should be proud, very encouraging progress. The technique looking very solid and stable, really nice orange fuzzy outfit too! I am curious why British Rowing do these 5K rowing trials, given WC regatta's are 2k, and indeed will go down to 1500m for LA Olympics, doesn't it penalise the more anaerobic based athletes, who might do better in the shorter distances? In athletics, we wouldn't ask a 400m runner to do trials via the 1500m distance, for example, just interested to know your take, thanks!
A rowing regatta involves multiple 2k rows in one day, three days or even a week. The final is of course the last race of the regatta, so your aerobic capacity is really important as well.
I think the trails are also a 1,5k and 2k effort, to get the full picture of the athlete, but i am not sure.
I think the 5k is really important also to see how good a athlete is in training long distance and big miles, and to see how he/she absorbs that, you wont get race-fit without a lot of miles.
Bottom line, 5k is more important than you think and a good baseline to start off.
Thanks Johnny. It does disadvantage those that are begged at shorter pieces like the 2k but it does, like Klaas said, an indication of aerobic fitness since that can be really important too. There are are other trials that are shorter on the water, 2k, or 4k but they are invite only so even if you're the fastest over 2k on the water, if you can't do 5k quick enough you won't get invited there.
Armchair coach here. Well done Cam, what an improvement. There's still more speed to be had. There are some aspects of your stroke still to improve as the wobble is still there. Your right hand still drops too low at the catch, possibly from sweep muscle memory. Flip catch - recommend squaring a bit earlier. "V" splash at the catch - the forward splash is bad and indicative of the blade being dropped in whilst moving forward. Suggest de-energizing the catch. Do lots of miles by taking a light as a feather catch before the leg drive - then ease the legs in to it. This will also help with going too deep. Shorten stroke - take 6" off the front end. If you check your speed profile you'll see the speed starts to drop off as you approach the catch, so take the catch before the speed drops too much. All the big 6 HWTs do this. And, nice to see the smoothies back in the boat.
Thanks! Already doing the things you're suggesting. Smoothies only changed as comps were broken too. Appreciate it 👍
a fine product of the monkton rowing club. top effort!!
Cam, I am inspired by your focus on improvements and the journey to being your best. You are an excellent role model for that focus and a growth mindset. I always look forward to your installments. Great work and good luck from someone who started his rowing on the Hous in Kent.
Thank you! Just trying to see what I can do! Helps with the support of the Yamsqaud 💪
That was awesome, Tank Fully Emptied Very Inspirational. Thank you soooo much for sharing
Glad you liked it James!
That leg drive is looking so good Cam the mind muscle connection and just continual repetition from being in a single scull has really changed your body from when you were in sweep, I can literally see it. Sorry to hear about February trials but I wish you the best and I hope you enjoy your journey throughout the rest of the year, we'll continue to enjoy seeing the process of you going fast Cam. Way to leave it all out there on the water, haven't seen you go that hard in a while. Much love from America
Thanks Mason! Definitely an improvement here. Hopefully more to come! 💪
Fascinating! Bravo! I've never gone so hard that I actually had to v*mit - not sure I could push myself that hard. Impressive willpower!
Some people just can't! Doesn't mean they aren't pushing ☺
Well done Cam! Vomiting at the finish is a sign of an all out effort. Keep going, you're getting closer!
I don’t think we should celebrate vomiting because I’ve seen a lot of Henley Regatta races where no one throws up, but could be a useful proxy?
Thanks Peter! A sign for me that I've pushed hard but not necessarily for others.
Mate, when you're throwing up at the end of the run.....you gave it everything. good on ya!!
Good solid result, well done.
Great effort! Congrats! Fantastic improvement!
Thanks as always Simon!
Great job and great progress! I'll have to try that technique for dealing with lactic acid. 🤮😄 Definitely maxxed out.
Looking good
Greets from Germany👍
Positive progress, Cam! Keep building on that and thanks for sharing! You keep me motivated!
Hey cam marlow rower here loving the new vid 😜
Always a good day watching cam after practice
you should add "clothing gear" to your list and provide details of that incredible blue and orange coat thanks.
Most of the stuff rowing gear is on the rival kit website. Should be a link in bio! Jacket was a present from my sister so will have to ask her!
So inspiring!
Can’t wait to see you at the Olympics one day cam ❤
That'd be epic!
Great effort yet again Cam and as you say, you don’t think you could have gone any faster on that day. Looking a lot more steady and symmetrical in the single now which has got to be a big bonus transferring all that power into boat speed🎉
What’s the cunning plan moving on from here then?😎
Thanks Steve yes, definitely faster but a while to go yet! Organising stuff now then will hopefully chat about it in next video!
Congratulations on a great row. I can see you made a lot of technical improvements between November and now in terms of stability coming forward, and that undoubtedly added boat speed. Being 207 cm it is difficult to stop a single from porpoising on the finish, but you do it really well, and there is not a lot of bow displacement, which is really impressive. Keep up the good work. P.S. My coach used to say to me that if you don't throw up or pass out after a what is scheduled to be a hard session then you haven't been trying. Well done on the throwing up as well!
great row cam!
that vomit after was incredible, well done cam!
Well done Cam good solid progress. Looking at the results and the guys you were competing against I’d say that’s a good result. You we’re about 24 seconds outside the top ten. 👏👍
Cam, bro, could you do a 7:30 2k row along pls? Lol your 8:00 2k vid helped me get sub 8, my mental game isn’t strong enough with out your guidance 😫
Hopefully can cover all the times at one point!
I hate it when people try to talk to me while I’m throwing up. Great race too!!!
Where did u get the LUSBC bobble hat from
From Coach at LUSBC
Well done! - the retching tells the story of how much you’re putting in to this! I’ve always wondered, how much is the rigger doing in terms of the blade being in the correct position? I.e. are you physically turning/twisting the oar after the stroke so that the blade goes horizontal (presumably to be aerodynamic and to minimise the risk of hitting the water in the recovery) and then twisting again before the onset of the stroke, or is the rigger doing this for you?
Feathering of the blades is done by the rower, for the reasons you mentioned. Riggers just set the angle of the blade (there's a square collar on the oar where it rests on the gate at the end of the rigger).
@@ivanae86 Thank you!
Well done Cam! I see you are using smoothie blades again instead of comp blades, which do you prefer?
Thanks Kahn. Yeah switched after just wanting to see difference again and then when I switched back we realised the comps I had are very off the measurements they should be so getting that looked at!
Your sculling has really improved
Thanks Noel! Hopefully can keep going 💪
Well done Cam, great row. I agree with Johnny Luk about 5k trials v actual 2k rows. I don't get it....
Have replied to Johnny. I think it makes sense to help test anaerobic abilities but there is a disadvantage to those relatively better at the shorter work.
@@gavinbrackley2248 whilst I agree there is a need for both power and endurance in rowing. It varies wildly what percentage of each is needed depending on what distances you're doing. The tests you mentioned are both still on the endurance side of things and have never heard of them being used outside of prep pieces vs actual tests or rate caps for younger/less experienced athletes.
@@gavinbrackley2248 yeah it's not rate capped for power or endurance reasons. It makes it easier to compare across juniors. As some juniors will have rowed for a long time and some not long. Much easier to rate 24 for 2k or 26 for 5k with less experience.
Hey man I’m a high school Rower I’m 5’8 145 pounds, what you u day is a solid split and /500
Really is a "how long is a piece of string" question. Depends on so many factors!
What’s next ? Outside of fixing the squeaks
Will have to stay tuned! Couple of things to wait on to make decisions on what's next
Great work cam, any chance you could do a week in the life so we get a real idea of all the training your doing? I’m curious as to how hard I need to work to get faster!
Thanks Tom. Everyone needs to get better at what their bad at. Not everyone is bad at the same thing! I do 3 rowing sessions a day, but doesn't mean you or everyone needs to.
Hello Cam, do you listen to specific BPM songs for rowing?
I do not. Just whatever I feel like when I do!
Cam! You should include gym music to your videos that way you’ll get more audience from fitness and grow bigger!!
When i put music on the videos they do worse
Why didn’t you go to Olympic game
Well after what I said in this video easy to know why. I mentioned I came 15th here. Plenty of people ahead of me for the 5k
@@CameronBuchan nice men good luck
