OMG!!! Talk about "someone just switched the light on". That triangle & square is beyond words.
I’ve been trying to learn this damn thing for decades. In about 35 minutes, I did. Instead of putting it back in a corner and have a drink, I’m actually doing stuff. Inventing stuff. Enjoying stuff. Thank you!
Thank you so much Brian. I've been playing songs with just chords for years but was always baffled and amazed by people who could play lead. I thought it was a black art, but you have broken it down into easily understandable concepts. I love the visualisation element to your lessons. You are a star.
Hands down the BEST Blues Lesson on YT. With just a simple triangle and box, you can start playing the blues. Just spent 20 minutes playing with it. Simple enough to get anyone playing blues. Thanks Brian.
it took me years to learn what brian just taught in 24 minutes .I stand by what I said in the past Brian has got to be one of the best teachers on UA-cam. looking forward to these upcomming and simple totally comprehensive lessons thanks again Brian. You keep putting the simple lessons out and make me want to pick my guitar back up again
It took you years to learn that?
Be quiet stevie @@StevieZero
It’s amazing he’s so humble that he doesn’t even know how good a teacher he is. Anyone looking to start learning guitar - find comprehensive ways to get around the guitar - learn different guitarist styles -learn different skills and techniques with a practical method of playing the skill whilst actually playing a piece, then you’ve just landed in the right place.
I’m thick and find it hard to remember and understand the guitar after years of playing. Brian has given me so many road maps to navigate through the fretboard. On word describes him .
AMAZING ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Paul Palmeri Thank you Paul! I appreciate that.
Agreed
Active Melody I only said what is true. You really make my week with always something new, a new angle. Such a different approach to most other guitar teachers and such a humble person. I really thank my lucky stars I came across you, because you make everything possible. I know you might think it too much praise but , really it’s just the truth.
Brian, for me, this was the Best Lesson/Video you've ever done! I rarely do a Post but this was a Light Bulb Moment for me. I had discontinued membership with you because I was getting So Frustrated that I could play half of the song you were demonstrating, then you would play a fast run or something I still could not do, and I could never complete the entire video. This Video brought me back and I signed up for a one year subscription. I can actually play this song but more important is the Triangle and Box lesson. It just turned on the Light Bulb in my head! Please throw in occasionally something easier like this one for us that are still Challenged, lol.
I just re-upped for about the 5th year in a row. Best teacher on the Internet. I’ve learned so much from Brian.
Amen to that.
Great stuff Brian, I’ve learnt so much from you. Great lesson.
Thank you!
I think you might be right!
Thanks for this lesson. It is really awesome. I can really hear your genuine excitement about teaching the lesson!
I've been playing for over 30 years, and I love it when I come to revelations (like how to play different modal scales, locating root notes along the fretboard, etc.) You're always learning something! I love the guitar so much. Great channel, boss! Keep rockin'
I almost passed you by on this but I'm glad I changed my mind. Sure love your Tele! You remind me of a friend of mine, now passed, who could sure pic! Larry Milton taught me in two afternoons how to go from a front man in a 5 piece, (always told to turn my volume down and pretend to play while I sang), to being the only guitar, ads bass, in a trio. I got a crash course of course but as the time went by I learned a whole lot more, using a few accidental bends and following my own ear. The first thing he taught me was how you used ONE chord all the way up the neck. Each chord you played moved up the neck to the 3,4 & 5. BAR CHORDS! Worked great. He taught me the scales you are teaching and how to START my runs from the tonic. Transposing came real easy after that and I sure built up a song list. I learned to play along with a record by finding the tonic note and listening to the changes. Minor to major scales were easy just by counting down three frets to start my runs. Make sense? I'm saving you video!
I like Brian because he is a great teacher who, unlike many other teachers, teach students at all levels, beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Also, his guitar string picking style is the same as mine.
For those with visual minds, like me, this is an amazing lesson that opens up whole new worlds on the fret board. The concept also works very well with finger style lead play and lends itself to mixing in transitional interval arrangements for variety. Thanks Brian!

I can’t believe I finally found this guy. My life is complete.
Today was my day. He has a great way to present some nice stuff.
I found this channel 3 weeks ago after playing for over half my life. It’s not exaggerating to say my skill has nearly doubled. This dude has helped me put so many pieces together it’s insane.
Right? Out of all the videos UA-cam suggested, this dude is from a different realm. Sharing the core and essences that gives you a lot of mileage.
Totally agree! He’s an amazing teacher! No fluff!
Stellar lesson (EP 380), a true break-through lesson. The rhythm chords are just as important. It would be great to get a breakdown on those chords.
Hi Brian! I've learnt so much from your lessons! I just cannot express enough how thankful I am! You are amazing! Keep doing the great work! Thank you!
Just renewed for my 2nd month and really enjoying Brian's lessons. Without much to do on Friday nights, I really look forward to his lessons every week so I have new material to practice over the weekend.
Finally, a guitar instructor who can explain lead to me in a way i understand... Thank you, Bryan!
Very happy to subscribe to the best guitar teacher on the internet! I hope you're making a fine living doing this cause your lessons are helping the next generation of guitar legends find their sound. Speaking for EVERYONE who loves music... Thank you! And keep up the great work!
This is one of the best explained, most useful and beautiful lessons on UA-cam, thanks Brian!
This is one of the best explained, most useful and beautiful lessons on UA-cam, thanks Brian!
So simple and this is forever stuck in my head. Thanks a ton for this lesson.
By far this has been the best lesson I've watched on how to play blues riffs. Great Job!
Really simple but way cool lesson - I've played for just enough years to follow along - but totally enjoyed and learned some new tips - NICE work and thanks for sharing Bro !!
All I can say is WOW!!! This video is amazing! I just learned more about the fretboard than I thought I ever would! Amazing teaching and lesson 😱😱💯💯💯
This was a great lesson, Brian. Understanding how to find the shapes based on the root note of the chord aside, this really solidified for me when/why you switch from major to minor (1 to the 4 chord, major to minor) and your resolving to the root note on a lick while staying in the same key... I'm seeing that having a better understanding of note names on the fretboard is a good idea to become more familiar with. I never understood why my solos when playing in major pentatonic sounded not quite right when switching to the 4, now I do! I don't know if I would've been ready for a lesson like this a year or two ago, or would've gotten the most out of it. But lots of light bulbs went off for me on this one, looking forward to seeing more like this.
And for any of you reading this who aren't premium members, it is easily worth if you are truly interested in becoming a better player!
Mark Ostrowski thank you Mark :)
Hello Mark, the premium member. Is there a progressive structure to the lessons, or guidance, or is it a large and truly amazing array of resources, to dip into. I am looking for both. Cheers
WOW! Thank you Brian, what a great lesson. As an old boy learning late in life your explanation and demonstrations have made perfect sense to me. Very excited at trying to sound as cool as you make it!
Hi Brian, very smart lesson and making the E pentatonics very easy to understand. Your lessons are always good and the best on YT. Thanks. Peace.
I’ve seen a lot of Brian‘s videos but this one struck me as if I was watching Charlie Brown and Linus walking home from school… It has that Peanuts fall season feel… So great when you can take a simple concept and make it easy and understandable..Thank You
Hey been playing 4. 30yrs u just open my world up man ur a great teacher been struggling with tha blues but u rock dude I got it now
This guy is a good guitar player, the video is a good lesson and there are many more like it today. I did not have the advantage of being able to access tons of material for free and have guitar player after guitar player showing me how to play my favorite song anytime night or day in my home (like a private lesson). Sometimes you even get schooled by the Original Guitar Player. I didn't have all of these modern tools in 1974 when I started playing guitar so I had to take a different route. Lucky enough to be born with a little talent and a fairly good ear I learned Rock Songs (by ear) from records and radio. One time a friend told me I should learn to "sing the notes". The reason? He told me it would be easier to remember songs and how to figure out new ones. I tried it. Best piece of advice I ever got when it comes to playing with some original feeling and emotion. I can teach you all of the "standard modern electric guitar" blues licks, set you up with a Fender Strat, a good amp and have you playing in no time doing licks that will impress all of your friends. But to properly play the blues it has to have feeling. That's where singing the notes (not out loud but in you head) will cause you to be more creative in your playing rather than just going through your standard repertoire of blues licks. The guitar gives you different inversion's that can be used to play the same scale and that also can get lost when using the "box method" of learning how to play lead guitar. Learn the guitar neck notes (alphabetically) and memorize their tones (lyrically). When you can do these two things playing melodies off the top of you head will be much easier and when you try to learn a lesson like this it too will be much easier. No matter what, try to be your own musician and bring out what is within yourself. Very few have made it in the music business by sounding just like somebody else!
This is wonderful Mr. Brain. You are a special breed of a teacher of guitar. I have been trying to learn the triads or combination of frets for long time and most of the lessons on the UA-cam confuses me more until I click on your clips. Thanks, Thanks, and Thanks. You are a great guitarist sir!
Wow!! What a lesson! I started watching thinking I can’t do that and by the end of the video I was playing it! I’ve taken so much from this! Thanks mate 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I've been paying for Active Melody membership for several years now. Having checked out many sites from a multitude of guitar teachers over the years, Brian is the best I have found, without doubt. I look forward to each new lesson every week and never miss one. Certainly great value and hugely instructive. I just can't speak highly enough of Brian's ability to patiently and clearly explain the art of creating melodic music. My playing has improved significantly thanks to him and I'm so grateful.
I had active melody for 3- 4 yrs off and on and canceled it. I thought Brian was hard to follow and learned a lot in the beginning,so I’ve tried guitar tricks, guitar zoom and (Justin guitar, which I learned a lot from.)I rush through stuff too fast and after 5 yrs of playing, I do nothing well. I will be rejoining A M and stay there
That was beautiful. Thank you!
After years playing the acoustic rhythm guitar. I just played my first (but not last) blues lick today.
This one is a diamond in amongst a huge pile of pure gold. Thanks heaps from Downunder Brian. Cheers !
I love all these lessons... I ALWAYS come out playing something neat.. Thanks so much!
I feel this one video improved my playing more than all the videos and practice I did this past month
Great teacher and NO ads, fantastic.
The relentless ads kills most teaching guitar sites....just as I think I get something, boom ads
💡💡💡💡💡thank you from someone who's been playing the same 3 chords for the last 30 years!
A good lesson for a begginer is the one that hooks you buy having fun and making you believe that you are doing great. Mission accomplished. Saludos feom Madrid.
Your channel is by far the best for skilled and beginner guitarists. So well explained. Brilliant
I’m so glad I discovered your videos you’ve really opened my eyes to understanding the blues!
Brian! Thank you! I feel like another light just switched on in my head! So simple yet effective. 😇
Good Lesson! This is how I taught myself the fretboard....I became very aware of the patterns and would focus on certain strings up & down until it was solid...it is way easier to concentrate in smaller areas, then link them together as you go thru different material...it is like a lightbulb moment when you're starting out!
U play beautifully and the ◾+🔺️ is so helpful and u made it look so easy and I've been playing 30+yrs!!! Really helpful thank you!!
Absolutely terrific lesson that helped connect more of the fretboard for me. I loved the connection of the major triad to the triangle and also realized the minor triad fits the minor pattern in roughly the same way. Great stuff.
Thank you so much, my playing has progressed more in the last 2 months with you than in the past 2 years!
"Very easy, sounds awsome." You have my undivided attention! 🤠
Dave in the Adirondacks
3card Monty, ...I agree with you Brian is the best teacher online. Heck if I lived anywhere near him I’d be trying to get in person lessons. Thank you Brian 👍
You're a fantastic teacher, Brian. I've been your registered Active Melody student for 2 years now and I have made great progress on the guitar. Thank you so much for your awesome tutorials. Best regards from Spain. 🇪🇸🎸🎶
Brian you are the OB1 of guitar teachers. I want to express my gratitude for all the hard work you put into make these amazingly useful free vids. You have taken me from the monotony of running up and down scales that I could never make a melody of to being able to play some pretty sexy lead. Thanks again and God bless you brother.
Your teaching methods and human character are terrific. The lessons you give are simplified and clearly understandable. Also one hell of a musician you are. I enjoy listening to you play. Thanks man!!
Me 2 .. I thought so too.
Thank-you Anthony !!
Thank-you Brian !!
One of the best lessons I've come across. very simple and explained very well. thx
Really love that turnaround lick. The little slides and the way you pluck it give me a Wes Montgomery “bumpin” vibe. Awesome stuff.
Great lessons! Super well structured . Very easy to explain and understand !!
Call and response, very nice! Not just hitting notes, but making music!
Superb, what a way and what a pleasure to learn such a nice melody. Very motivating, thank you!
This is a great lesson ,i have to repeat it a few times for practice purposes but i can do everything here. Ace licks helped me with my string bending before i got here. I will stay here for a while Thank You!
I loved this lesson - it's such a great way to jump in to this scale. Thank you sir!
Another comprehensive lesson, Brian, the slow breakdown makes it easier for the students
Great lesson Thanks . You explained it so well my understanding went up a level and so simple to remember and put into use and so simple. So many lessons I've learned and forgot but I will be using this for the rest of my life .
Love your way of simplifying such awesome, sacred knowledge. TY
Thank you. This is helping me really mentally smooth out my leads... After 30 years. Sound like a new player👍
Nice analogy - shining a light on notes; very practical - THANKS!
Simple,effective...can be powerfull,can be soft...good lesson,explained by a very good teacher,thanks👍

You have to mention the new tele!! It’s a 1976! I wonder how I knew that??? But I love it. Very much like the one you had about 10 years ago. I love telecasters!
I'm impressed! The method you are teaching is excellent and unique, and I thank you, sir! Definitely tips I can put into play. Best!
Thanks Ernie :)

Wow my first time watching....What a excellent musician and teacher, a lot of musicians don’t want to share their talents. Thank you sir !
One of the best online lessons that I've seen. Great job,!
Thank you Brian … your teaching is the best … straight clean and simple … great !
I like your videos, especially this one. Great concept on the shapes and a good reminder on going up 3. Thanks for sharing.
This is so simple and sounds so good, great lesson man 🤙
Just what I’ve been looking for. This lesson sounds very Larry Carlton-esque. My favorite. Looking forward to learning with you, Brian.
You have provided MANY! great lessonsand i appreciate your teaching style. I dont play elec. guitar. but this fun on the acoustic too. excellent lesson .
This is definitely one of my favorite lessons
Oh, that rhythm guitar through headphones ... puts my head in spin! :)
GRAZIE Brian, You are THE Teacher!!!!! Cheers from Italy
Man I do not remember you calling me last week to ask what I needed to work on. How did you know? Unbelievable how you simplify but end up with such great sounds. I am all over this in the am.
I like the tone of this guitar. It's a nice full sound.
I really liked this video, it explains so much to me. Thanks Brian
Love this lesson. So many jj cale tones in there. A revelation thank you.
Thanks Brian
Your the king of @7:03 “let’s be as expressive as we can with this ”
Bottom line here’s stuff you can apply and have fun playing NOW not over complicating 👍
I'm glad I stumbled across this. I've been confused for years about whether to try to follow the chord on lead. This tells me just stick with the basic key, but alternate between major and minor. Much simpler, and will be more interesting than not switching between major and minor. Another good idea is the triangle and square. That lets you focus on bends/vibrato for once. I'm going to run with this approach for a bit and see how it works. Love that blues 101 lick also.
Just about the best video for learning the pentatonic
Lots of material covered but great teacher who intentionally wants to get you going without drilling into too much music theory. But underlying all these riffs are ton of it! Thanks!
Such a great lesson with clear and precise explanation. Thank you.
Thanks Brian. Cool lesson to look at combining shapes with major/minor pentatonic .
Nice, nice... KILLER! As a keyboard player composer, teaching myself guitar, this lesson really opened up my understanding of guitar shapes a Massive amount. Thank you kindly!
I just purchased a guitar and have been following lessons with Fender play. Watching this video I actually feel like I can play something. I think I'll have to become a member at activemelody.com.
Been binge watching this all morning to lock it in reeeeeeeal good.🤜🤛
Brilliant lesson!! Huge fan of the way you approach and teach somewhat difficult to understand aspects of guitar playing. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom.
Abhishek, very well said! I totally agree. Thanks.
You got a new subscriber, i may have to try out your lessons after a few more videos. I def enjoy your teaching style man.
Just got my first electric guitar and a spider V60 amp yeh!!!! I’m picking with my fingers coz it’s easier to control all the other string noises lol this is the perfect song and I’m doing Ok so thanks Brian your lessons are always fantastic 💃🎶💃🎶🇦🇺
Sounded good man. You struck me as the Fred Rogers of guitar teaching with a streak of funk; Love the tone
Fantastic video. I can see that I will be using this in my playing. Great tips on tying it together and how to move it around. Thanks much mate!
AWESOME, Brian! Mindblowin' lesson! Really appreciate it! Took me very long to get here... ;-) Thanks for sharing your wisdom!
Hey - I appreciate your teaching style and look forward to dedicating some time to watching more.
