As someone who got laid off by the mouse: 1) the gap in your resume will be fine! Everyone understands a lay off isn't your fault and was out of your control. 2) File for unemployment. That is money for you that you have been paying into. It won't be used unless you use it so use it. 3) The first one is always the hardest because of that "coldness" you felt. It is the disconnect that the company doesn't feel the same way about you that you do of it. For "type-a" folks it can be a particularly hard blow since in school authority figures want to build you up and care about your success but your job doesn't and will never. REMEMBER THAT. 4) Apply/look for jobs daily BUT for a limited time (1 hr at most) use the rest of the time for you! Remember, You are going to be fine. Your job is not your life and you are not your job.
When I got laid off, my stepmom did the exact same thing by saying “well that’s business” so I understand your pain. What helped me get back up is knowing that a job will always do what makes sense to them financially, so I really took the time to evaluate what’s important for me and sharing more of what I’m going through with a therapy and friends rather than family.
I’m so so sorry and as someone who also has parents that see me as their retirement plan, I can seriously relate with the amount of stress and pressure that you may feel. I get bald patches when I think about it sometimes. Taking this month off I feel is a great idea and spend this time making plans ❤ good luck.
thank you for sharing your experience and being vulnerable. I started a 3 month LOA 2 weeks ago, and definitely resonated with the feeling of not having anything on your calendar and really having space for yourself. I didn't inform any of my family (Chinese) about my LOA, as far as they know, I'm still working my 9-5; I also support them financially (pay for half the mortgage). I'm fortunate enough to have enough saved and living below my means such that they wouldn't even notice any blimp on money flow and my spending habits. Because of this setup, I have the workweek to myself, I can do whatever I want during this time. And it's magical. Good on you for supporting your fam, use this gap on yourself! Rooting for you
i was also laid off from my remote management job earlier this year. i had been with the company for going on my tenth year, and my manager (whom i had also worked with directly for six of those years!) very coldly laid me off with help from an HR rando. neither one turned their camera on. it all happened very quickly, and to be honest with you several months later i'm still mentally healing from the experience. i don't think it really matters how often you've had this happen to you- getting laid off is deeply traumatic because ultimately your time, labor, and loyalty are discarded and reduced to a "business decision". i can relate to all of the emotions you're describing here so well- especially the overwhelming feeling of being ripped away from the schedule you're accustomed to, as well as your list of unfinished tasks. as others have said, i think re-investing some of this new time back into yourself and your own well-being will be really important. take care, better things are coming 💕
I felt that, as I had a similar situation, but after just 3.5 years of work. I can hardly imagine it being after 10 years. I understand that having to tell someone they're laid off is hard, but the people involved being cold and unattached only makes it worse. Anyway, I just wanted to wish you the very best in your healing process ♥
This is what peeves me a bit. At least have the basic respect of turning on your camera if you are going to mess with people's lives like this. I understand it was a business decision, but it's the very least you can do. Its such a coward move to have the camera off to tell people this.
Thank you for sharing this. I can imagine how shocking and overwhelming this experience must be, especially with the unexpected timing and the pressure of being the main support for your family. It’s completely understandable to feel lost right now. I work in tech too, and I’ve been feeling like a layoff might be coming next year. I actually went through a hypothetical “what if” plan just to mentally prepare myself. It’s not an easy thing to think about, so I really admire your strength in sharing this so openly. Take the time you need to breathe and reset. I’m sure you’ll come back stronger with even more clarity on your next steps. You’ve clearly got so much talent, and this is just one part of a bigger journey. Stay strong-I’ll be looking forward to seeing where you go next.
Take a deep breath, enjoy some time being idle (actually it is healthy and can provide so much personal insight and help with new strategy) and go back at it. You got this! Don't put too much stress on you that you need go back on the market with new added value. You are enough!
Sorry you're going through this. It will certainly make you a stronger person. Honestly, I prefer to get the "cold" layoff rather than the "heartfelt" one where they pretend to care. Try to enjoy the time off though. Enjoy it guilt free.
I just lost my remote IT job too on 12/3. Two weeks ago and I'm still trying to think and process the whole situation. Do not worry about the gap on resumes, right now in Tech, these layoffs are everywhere. We're all feeling it. I'm planning on jumping on the job-hunt after the 1st of the year and new business budgets open up possibilities for new hires. Hang in there! It'll be ok
Dear Charli, your youtube UX content, case studies and interview tips has helped me alot as I applied it in my own career. I'm very sure that good things will be coming your way!
felt!! i got laid off last year around this time and am still looking for work praying that things go well for you + that the time you take to process isn't too harsh the feeling is sucky asf and i completelyunderstand the telling your family part :/ comforting isn't the strong suit of chinese parents, and the questions they ask (even if they don't have ill intent) can be extremely hurtful
It hurts for sure. Having been there myself I know the feeling of uncertainly. I'm here to tell you that it will barely be a thought a few years from now. All the best in the journey !!!
so sorry to hear that. I myself got laid off just this Thursday, and with my education and experience, it is difficult to find a reasonable employment. on a bright side, I didn't like the job and like you said, it is good time to sign up to some course. I hope you'll get fine very soon and find a good source of income either new job or streaming :)
Hi Charli, sorry to hear that as I can relate so much with my recent layoff. Please take time for yourself and enjoy your holiday seasons, I am sure you will find something nicer next year❤
I was in the same boat last year and I took a long break and took an equal amount of time looking for a new job, and even though I'm working in the org that I've always wanted to work in I'm finding myself second guessing myself. Just like you I was also supporting my parents (though they had their pension), and they did not understand that it wasn't just easy to get employment and I had to pay them out of my dwindling savings. I wish it was simple but even now I'm still processing losing my previous job.
The gap is fine. I've had a gap that was significant because I chose to omit the 3 months stint in my resume altogether. No one has questioned it at all and I'm going through another gap right now.
Embrace the journey and go full throttle with your channel! They’re not losing sleep over…don’t lose sleep over them! Become a full time creator. You can make way more focusing on your channel! ❤
you should not be your parents retirement plan. They should have saved something themselves, its on them if they didnt. Especially the last generation that had the opportunity to buy houses/apartments 20 years ago for 10% or less of what they are today.
Not necessarily an option for everyone. Especially in Asian countries it’s culturally expected for parents to depend on their children so companies and governments don’t need to actually provid or incentivize pensions
You are a champ Charli it's hard to forget everything but sth great is coming for you & ya do make a video on applying to jobs or sth like that. ALL THE BEST. 🙂
Charli, I'm so sorry this happened to you, it must be so jarring and anxiety inducing. I hope you can still find ways to enjoy the holiday with your family/friends. You are incredibly skilled and talented, so I'm confident you can find something else after you've had time to processed this. I think you could definitely lean more into streaming and making videos in the meantime, and I would love to see come co-working and application process videos from you! 💛
I think I am having this same feeling but in another field of my life, thinking about some possible scenarios where I would be feeling exactly like you, and i can feel you I think, how hard all of this change would be.... im so sorry for this but feeling like things will be better as they were before for you 💗💗💗
Hey! I just want to hug you and say that everything is for the better ❤ You are a very inspiring designer, take your time and have some rest to accumulate the energy 🫂
I almost got laid off this past month as well, I ended up getting offered another role instead within my organization, but I'll be honest I'm not sure how I feel about it. Have you tried going into analytics? I majored in CS as well and I knew from the start I didn't want to be a Software Engineer. I ended up getting a role in web analytics and enjoyed it so it's an option to look into.
Love your sincerity through the video, it's hard news and hard to process, but I'm pretty sure you will be fine, you seem like a hard working person and I'm sure anywhere your next venture leaves your it's going to be way better, loves and hugs ❤️
You are so beautiful and so wonderful. We all worry about all of these things. I'm experiencing something similar. I hope that the lord will have mercy on me.
I assume and have friends who are in Canada and work for a US based company remotely making USD and spending CAD as living expenses. It would be very difficult now to replace a US remote job earning USD at US market rates while living in Canada.
oof things are uncertain now, now is exactly the best time to look because your competition will be significantly down. once the new year kicks in it'll be full on pandemonium again for job competition. You're competeing with AI now, consider this thoughtfully, not just for your position but for it to read your CV. It's relatable af having parents who make you their retirement plan, very common... but the fact you've never been unemployed tells me that you're not really living in the current job climate, I'm 40, things have never been worse in my lifetime when it comes to acquiring a job in our industry. AI really did a number on things - keep your wits about you, you'll need every ounce of ingenuity to stand out. I felt bad about how cold you were treated, its likely the person firing you was AI driven. Remember, no corporation cares about you, they care about money. This seems doomer, because the climate is doom right now. Sorry if its harsh, but you need to be in reality right now. the comment alone will help your channel, if nothing else.
No shade to your parents, but why do I get the feeling Asian parents have kids (partially) so that they're not completely screwed when they're retired XD
So sorry that this happened to you! Honestly, the product design market is pretty volatile and scary right now. I am not a hiring manager myself, but if you wanted to connect over LinkedIn i'd be happy to shoot over any opportunities that I see come up. I am a product designer in the finance sector.

Thanks for information @yebkamin
FYI people get laid off at this time of year usually to avoid giving them bonus's or so that the ceos can have a larger bonus.
Mate I've been unemployed from the last two year since I've graduated. Future looking pretty grim, not gonna lie.
Being laid off feels better than being singled out and fired. Take a break and enjoy your family.

I'm sorry your parents put that pressure on you. That's not really fair but I understand they're your parents and it's tough for everyone right now.
thank you for sharing your experience and being vulnerable.

I am sorry that happened to you. Healing takes a long time. I wish you success in achieving your goals.
I'm so sorry this happened to you. Thank you for your kind words and I wish you so much healing and success going forward
I got recommended this randomly, it was cool to watch something so casual and wholesome. Hope you find a new way to live soon!

Unfortunately, it happens all the time around this time of year. Use this time to rest, recharge, and move on. You will find a better place!
It hurts for sure. Having been there myself I know the feeling of uncertainly. I'm here to tell you that it will barely be a thought a few years from now. All the best in the journey !!!

Happened to me same time last year ... The few months that followed without work were the happiest lol
Hi Charli, sorry to hear that as I can relate so much with my recent layoff. Please take time for yourself and enjoy your holiday seasons, I am sure you will find something nicer next year❤
Same to you! It’s such a tough thing to go through but hopefully we’ll both find something we love next year 🙏
Take it easy and get ready for tomorrow, I am sure you'll have a great comeback story. Gonna stay tuned to watch that.
That sucks, I’m sorry. You’re young, you’ll be ok. Enjoy the holidays and don’t stress too much about finding another job asap.

it's definitely time for us tech folks to start our adventure

Welcome to the club. Some people are already ahead of the layoff game by never being hired yet.
I am really sorry this happened to you. Making a nest egg for you and your parents is really tough. All the best!
Well the good news is your channel is being picked up in the algorithm. Good luck on your job search.
Sorry to hear. This is going to happen many more times in life. It's good to have some savings for a rainy day to help through the process.
Maybe its a sign for you to go full time UA-camr :D
no worries at least you have a family and that is what really matters in life
That must be so hard to be your parents retirement plan, I had a son but this kind of obligation freaks me out.
Sorry to this happened to you. Take some time off and relax before job searching. Good luck!
Oh goodness :( I’m so sorry this happened so close to the holidays

You are so beautiful and so wonderful. We all worry about all of these things.

I am really sorry this happened to you. But i know that 2025 it will be better than you can imagine, stuff happens for a reason.
was the company also Canada based? Would be surprising for a US company to lay off Canadians right now given CAD weakness
I assume and have friends who are in Canada and work for a US based company remotely making USD and spending CAD as living expenses. It would be very difficult now to replace a US remote job earning USD at US market rates while living in Canada.
I don't understand how you feel but you will be fine.
where do you work?
I think you are anxious about getting things done. You need to focus on working on the things that you like to do.
