  • Yes, it's cool to talk about advanced ultrasound, echo, and all the things we discuss here. It's absolutely necessary, though, to have a solid base to put all that fun learning on......and it all starts with physics.
We know what you're thinking: "Please, not a physics lecture!" Well we kind of agree, but this is different. This is Mike Stone, @bedsidesono. He is pretty phenomenal at explaining this stuff. He's got his Doceri out and is going to be drawing and speaking us inch by inch towards an understanding of ultrasound physics that will enhance all of your ultrasound knowledge.

As a ultrasound physics instructor it is absolutely irritating to here this supposed "Sonographer" say you don't need to understand the physics to be a good sonographer. Although it does not use ionizing radiation, there are ways to harm an embryo and fetus with improper understanding of physics. I have been scanning for 40 years and I have seen lots of poor sonographers, most of them physicians because they don't understand the physics

I have been studying the side effects of ultrasound for nearly a decade and have come across this often. Many sonographers are not aware that, despite being 'non-ionizing' the side effects are quite dynamic. Ultrasound has been demonstrated to have numerous systemic side effects in animal models including effects on genetic material and changes in their hormones. It's a lot to learn about and I am hoping with greater education in general these issues will be naturally alleviated.

if you could provide links to references that would help prep for the physics part of the exam that would be fantastic! thank you for your videos !!

Dr. Stone, You mentioned that you had some helpful references for the ultrasound physics exam; could you please share the links? I am taking the ARDMS physics board soon. Thank you. I get a lot from your instruction, your style just works for me.

Starting a lecture about physics with " physics is not important" doesn't give you much hope in whats to come.
And as expected, it is a pretty average lecture. Not sure about sonographers but definitely not enough for the radiology trainees and doctors.

JK not sure exactly what you meant there. A sonographer who specialises is far far superior in diagnosing using ultrasound than a doctor would be. Nothing worse that a physician thinking they can dabble. You only get expert in this field by hours and hours of looking at different images every day. You really do need to understand the physics or you could make a serious error particularly when it comes to using colour Doppler and blood flow.
