Started working with charcoal this year and I love it even more than pencil! I always used pencil because it was just the default medium I had around but I love the loose fluidity of charcoal, as well as how much better my line quality it is with it! It feels like my line weight and wuality is just intuitively so much better when I'm using charcoal, especially those compressed charcoal blocks. Charcoal is super fun for working on value as well. And a hard charcoal pencil works great for me too, because it prevents my paper from getting overcrowded and darkened with searching lines and too heavy handed marks, making it great for sketches or just more polished drawings.
