For over three decades now, Bernard Winsemius has been my favorite organist for (pre-)Baroque works, especially when he plays them on this truly magnificent and utterly unique instrument. To my ears, there is no better combination of player and instrument for these works. Winsemius plays with a boldness and freshness all his own, while the organ has a confident and aristocratic character all its own. A one-of-a-kind partnership!
What a stunning and breathtaking performance of this pinnacle work of the North German Style. By far the best performance I have heard of this work. As an amateur organist myself I watch this video in great admiration of Mr. Winsemius' eye watering technical finesse at the keyboard.
Oh my, what a wonderful, dramatic performance!!! One of the rare organists who truly PHRASES and shapes each note! That is the beauty of these organs with such responsive tracker action.
You are absolutely right Emlyn - just about my favourite clip on UA-cam. And the proof is when you watch it…think “well, come on - I can do that too”…go to the organ but just can never come close to this vibrancy and clear direction and drive! You really feel like you are watching the electric energy with which this would have been played in that period - it all suddenly makes sense.
I had never heard of Bruhns before...what a superb introduction - breathtaking playing. Mr Winsemius is superb, and this makes one sorry that so little has survived from Nikolaus Bruhns' compositions
Yes, few works survived, but of excellent quality. I remember when I read at first sight his wonderful chorale fantasia on "Nun komm', der Heiden Heiland": fantastic, above all I must consider more challenging to some organists the edition I have in my library, the manual parts only with C-clefs.
I keep returning to this majestic recording. Must have listened to it hundreds of times.... And I have watched EVERY other Bruhns e-minor great praeludium here on YT and contrebombarde. No-one, LITERALLY nobody can even dream of reaching what Mr. Winsemius accomplished here. This is just beyond exceptional.
Wow! What can I say? This is one truly enduring and sublime performance of a wonderful masterpiece by Bruhns. Mr Winsemius allows this instrument to fully breathe in those vitalicious moments of near silence in this enchanting work.
The best Prelude in E by Bruhns I have ever heard. And this spectacular, dramatic performance is on one of the heaviest keyboard actions I have ever played. Look at Bernard's hands and shoes!
Phantastic! And so nicely playd, many thanks indeed. Unfortunatly we do not know where nd which organ we listen to. Anyhow, it's a masterpiece and it's masterly playd, GREAT! Bruhns (1665-1697) unfortunatly died very young at 32y, he lived befor Bach, but what a fantastic composer he was. Listening to Bruhns music, sometimes Im shure Bach must have known him.. (!) ;)
Baroque music has been the love of my life for 50 years. While I pride myself in knowing and understanding it, never had I heard of this composer. Please accept my humble and sincere thanks for convincing me that a thing called "civilization" still lives and breathes, Bernard Winsemius! You, too, are a Master.
Vigor, clarity, turned phrasing and rhetorical sense. few organists have these qualities at the same time. Young organists, you have an example to learn from: listen carefully !
What a wonderful gift Nik Bruhns left us together with Buxtehude , a legacy seamlessly continued ang developed by Bach , BACH the greatest Genius in Music :D :D
Many are inclined to render a virturoso-esque performance of this piece. If you do that, you lose the heart-rending rubato, soul-searching uncertainty of the beginning passage. Slow it down guys, knock the socks off your audience, give them chills down their spines...C'mon guys, get some rubato drama...watch some theater organ music. Usually, Virgil Fox's dazzling virtuosity completely eclipsed the music he was playing. HEAR THE MUSIC, FEEL THE MUSIC, BREATHE DEEPLY, AND LET IT FLOW, and with metered steps, convey your feelings to your audience. WITH NO RUSH OR HURRY, You ain't out there to play more notes per minute than the other guy. Despite my suggestion to Herr Winsemius to "ham" it up in the beginning, his performance was utterly superb. Can't wait to visit the Netherlands, and see what Maestro Winsemius thinks about my orchestral transcription of Frank's Chorale # 2 in B minor. DUCK AND COVER....SHEPARD'S COMING
A master in the noblest meaning of the word (Meister). Europe culture still not dead. Nobody could write such pieces nowadays but at least remains understanding of it's grammar and ability to play it. "Für Gottes Ehre" und für die Nord Deutschland musikalische Schule.
It is such a shame that so little of Bruhns' organ music has been preserved. I have the DVD from which this is taken, a documentary on the two organs at Alkmaar, with some bonus material from other organs, such as this. I highly recommend it to all lovers of the organ.

Isn't this a baroque piece though?
100% true!!!
Thank you, Bernard Winsemius, for your vigorous and poetic performance of this great music on this splendid organ. I have never heard a better.
Dear Sefa, it seems that you have found a fine piece of musical art as we can see here. KEEP UP THE GOOD VIBE BOIIIIII

Emlyn Jessen totally agree
Yes. You noticed his deep understanding of the musical phrase. Really wonderful and amazing.

Sefa sent me here. This is great! Could listen to this all day long👌
Magnificent performance. The energy of it is totally thrilling.
A fantastic rendition! I know his interpretation on one of his cd recordings on this organ. This second recording is even more exciting.
07:45 the most epic ending in music history!
Wow! What can I say? This is one truly enduring and sublime performance of a wonderful masterpiece by Bruhns. Mr Winsemius allows this instrument to fully breathe in those vitalicious moments of near silence in this enchanting work.
Honestly, this is the most exciting and awesome interpretation of this work that I've ever listened to! BRAVISSIMO mr. Winsemius! You're my idol now!
The best Prelude in E by Bruhns I have ever heard. And this spectacular, dramatic performance is on one of the heaviest keyboard actions I have ever played. Look at Bernard's hands and shoes!
Great, masterful execution. Excellent interpretation. The recording was done very professionally. The sound is powerful and yet very detailed. Bravo.
brilliant, breathtaking, .... there aren’t the right words to describe this masterpiece ! It’s the perfect interpretation of Bruhn’s artwork
I really enjoyed your interpretation of this, one of my favourite pieces for organ.

Good music. Please make a Song wirh Sefa.
beautiful bassoon 16 in the pedal
Its not a bassoon but a bombarde
@@henkjansen9847 no, it's a "Bazuin 16 Vt", see it on a photo, e.g. one here: www.nieuwekerk.nl/orgelconcerten/ (background picture)
That's right but bazuin is Dutch for bombarde
