It's pretty great, but I found it not to be quite as good as some people make it up to be, I have a GO model, and RetroArch crashes A LOT in it, which is bad because RetroArch has the only decent PC engine emulator for it that I'm aware of, the only other one I found runs worse than NitroGrafx on the DS which is unacceptable... However when RetroArch DOES work it wipes the floor with NitroGrafx! But it won't boot every game... PC engine aside, there's also the SNES which doesn't run great, I couldn't get a single game to boot with RetroArch, but a lot of games will boot on Snes9xTYL, but you have to turn off Vsync to get a decent speed, it's not ideal, but it works, and I can get a bit of a Ninja Warriors fix on-the-go that way... There's a bit of input lag though... Oh and, WonderSwan emulation on the PSP is abysmal! I try to boot Guilty Gear Petit 2 on the [e]Mulator, and I get 20fps at best when the game is supposed to run at 60... Those systems aside, everything else I tried runs surprisingly great! Mega Drive, Neo Geo, GBA, all of them run great! (And I have no idea why considering those systems are supposed to be considerably more powerful than the ones that run poorly) And they don't crash the system! There's also NES and Neo Geo Pocket Colour which also run pretty well on the system, but I don't play those nearly as much...
Michirin9801 I want the GO model because I use my PSP for downloads and as an MP3 player more than I use my UMD's. That and 16 GB out of the box is better than having to use a memory stick pro duo.
You could just buy an SD to Memory Stick adaptor, there's one particular model which has 2 micro SD card slots which support cards of up to 64GB each, so you could have 128GB of memory that way! You know, I almost regret having bought a PSP GO, because it doesn't support regular Memory Sticks or Memory Stick Pros, I have to use an M2 card, and the only SD card solution for PSP GO models involve an intrusive mod which I'm not capable of performing, and even if I was, I don't even think has parts is available anymore (I could be wrong though), so I'm stuck with M2 cards, which only go as high as 16GB, so with one of those I can only have up to 32GB on my PSP at a time... I don't quite regret it though because I get to play emulators on it on top of PS1 and PSP games~ Not to mention the PSP GO is quite small, it's even smaller than my small old 3DS, while having a slightly larger screen! (To be fair though, the 3DS has two screens, and the clamshell design protects them, the PSP GO has its screen always exposed, and mine already came scratched... Yeah, I got it used) I also found that putting RetroArch on an M2 card instead of loading it from the internal memory causes it to crash a lot less often... It still crashes though, but only if I switch the games too many times, never during a play session...
I put so much time into Peace Walker and Dissidia 012. And I experienced many great games like Locoroco 1 and 2, Daxter, Crisis Core, GTA: VCS, Maverick Hunter X, LBP, Ys Seven and Ghost of Sparta. It was a great platform.
The PSP was really ahead of it's time, I remember the last game that I bought before moving on was SOCOM: Fire Team bravo 3 and it was for just 10 dollars/euros (back when they were launching the Essentials titles) Now for the next DF Retro video. It would be interesting to look back at the Xbox 360 reveal (as you guys stated near the end.) or even the whole Xbox One debacle reveal in 2013.
I remember when the idea of Reggie being this tough, intimidating badass was basically a meme within the gaming community. There was this magazine I used to buy in the mid 2000s which joked about it pretty often. His public image really changed since then. i think the switch happened in 2007 or so. Btw, I found it funny how much cooler the prototype of the DS looks compared to the final product. I really like the first model of the ds, but I think it was really ugly looking, especially because of all of those holes for the audio. I would have really preferred that other design. Also, I think that the Wii still wasn't that well finalized at this point. Iwata in this conference said that they didn't want to focus on power, but he also said something like "don't worry, the graphics will still make you say "wow"". I think that they originally didn't intended to rehash the GameCube hardware. Some former Factor 5 employees confirm this theory: since they were working close to Nintendo back then, they had access to some of the first prototypes of the Revolution and apparently those were as powerful as the Xbox 360, more or less. Also, in one of his GDC talks, Iwata stated that back in 2004 they still didn't know precisely how they wanted the Revolution to be "revolutionary", they still had to design the Wiimote. So I suspect that the name of the "Revolution" wasn't a reference to its technology, but to its intent (which was to lure non-gamer to gaming).
darsirious yes he was and I thank him everything he did for the industry especially smash (he saved the development of the original smash) but he was the cause of Nintendo's darker days, I'm talking about shovelware and Wii u, gimmicks and bad kid marketing
yes i am aware, but i choose to value him more as a person, gamer, game developer, and all around a very capable person on every aspect of hardware and software than marketing. i choose to see the light rather than the dark.
Still have my Day 1(Europe launch, Sept. 1, 2005) PSP1000, still works flawlessly. For years it has been my go to emulation machine. I replayed so many of the old Gameboy, Ps1 and SNES games I played as a kid on it. The library of PSP games was also impressive. Even though it was outsold by the DS by 2:1, 80 million units sold for Sonys 1st handheld is extremely impressive. In fact, for my tastes, handheld gaming was so good last gen that I only very late in the gen got a home console. I think I only got a used Xbox360 and Ps3 in 2012 or something like that.
Best Reggie quote is from E3 2005. “To date, global sellthrough for Nintendo DS stands at over 5 million, or more than twice the level for the PSP. Now, I know what some of you are thinking: "Well, the PSP hasn't arrived in Europe yet." So we got there when we said we would, and they didn't. You know what? That's Sony's issue, not my problem.”
At the time of the release of the PSP, I was working at Sony DADC. We were making UMD's before we even knew what they were for. We could buy them for next to nothing so, I had a nice collection before the PSP even released. I could grab a UMD straight off the line and play it on my breaks. They actually encouraged that at the time. That was when physical media still reigned supreme and business was booming. I LOVED my PSP, especially working there.
These videos have been great. John and Rich make a good duo, and it's a lot of fun looking back on these presentations. Looking forward to the Xbox 360 video!
I loved how the DS was very multiplayer oriented. DS download play was amazing. With a lot of games you only needed 1 copy and you could play multiplayer. Not to mention the novelty of that little chat room where you could connect to your friends and draw stuff. Or playing Animal crossing and joining each other's towns. Pokemon diamond and pearl with their underground multiplayer crystal mining thing. Metroid Prime hunters is the only handheld FPS multiplayer game I can remember, and it's glorious once you get used to it. I have so many memories of playing DS with my friends.
In the case of the PSP, it WAS a plastic shell. More importantly the ones that were actually ON were also plastic shells, just built around an LCD displaying an external video feed, as of it were a frame on a small PC monitor. Notice the hard mounting and obviously fake button press. They didn't give specs because they werent final, beyond the dimensions. They didn't show games running on a PSP because those psps couldn't take input. It was all an illusion
PSP is a phenomenal device. The day I got mine and played Wipeout Pure for the first time was absolutely mind bending. Now I have the Ys games, Lunar, Breath Of fire, Gradius Collection, Valkyria Chronicles II... So many awesome games.
dajam9035 Hahaha, same as me! The demo disk was actually very good. It had a little of everything. I've started collecting PSP games, better do it now before they get insanely expensive. So far the Ys games are the most pricey, luckily I already got all of them at reasonable prices.
I just pulled my old psp from the drawers, and playing on it again made me realize what a revolutionary device this was. I spent so much time on this thing, I wish I could travel back in time and experience all this awesomeness from the psp as a kid again.
Awe man.. this takes me back to when I was 18. I worked a last minute job my dad's buddy needed. It was construction, hauling concrete into a truck and drilling holes with an auger (building a park). 10 hours later, $500 later I was at "target" buying a PSP, MLB, NHL and "hellboy" then off to the airport and flying to Texas on vacation. Good little system, saw "hellboy" on it for the first time, listened to mp3s on it. Way ahead of it's time.
The first time I saw the PSP was in an import tech shop next to Manchester Picadilly train station in February 2005, which was over 6 months before the official UK release. The guy in the shop kindly brought it out of the display case to let me have a go on it, and it genuinely felt like something from the future with all of its features, utterly jaw dropping. I'd say it impressed me even more than when I first tried out an iPhone back in 2008. I was tempted to buy it, but it was a Japanese import and the price was I think £350, maybe even more and 18 year old student me couldn't really afford it, so I decided to wait.
The PSP did have shaders 2 Pixel shaders and 1 Vertex shader! So impressive for a handheld of the era, not even the PS2 or 3DS actually had true shaders
I see the Switch as a spiritual successor the PSP consoles (including the Vita). The PSP was groundbreaking when it came out. Console quality games on the go is pretty much what the Switch is selling us today. And despite being a major source of headache, I loved the UMDs. When you bought a physical copy, it actually felt like you bought something tangible as opposed to the small cartridges of Vita and Switch. I mean I get why Sony and Nintendo went for cartridges but holding a UMD actually felt like I am holding something cool and awesome. Also, the PSP was built like a fucking tank. PSP and PS2 was the golden age for Sony Computer Entertainment.
It's not necessarily correct to say that "PSP has skipped a generation". Because GBA wasn't "basically SNES", it was in between SNES and N64 in terms of graphical capabilities. And PSP was right in between PS1 and PS2. So it was a generation, precisely and exactly.
Right? People calling GBA a portable SNES is stupid. GBA was easily able to run Doom while SNES was struggling in anything 3D. Even the 2d games looked much better on the GBA in terms of animations, color and resolution.
@@PurushNahiMahaPurush so what? Most games still looked like a snes game just as most psp games looked like a ps2 game Saying that anyone who calls it a protable ness are wrong is like saying doom is not a first person shoter because the engine renders it as a top down
@@dumitriman but it ran like trash. Have you seen Driver 3 on the GBA ? I looks almost as good as a very early PS1 game. That's impressive. So, GBA is between 4th (snes) and 5th (n64) gen, but a bit closer to 4th gen. DS is right between 5th (n64) and 6th (gamecube) gen and PSP is closer to 6th gen (ps2)
Great vid. Took me right back. I remember also paying a fortune for the PSP on import and being blown away by ridge racer; and then being quite disappointed when I got the DS (the 1st version wasn’t so pretty)....until I started playing and it was so much fun. Dr kawashima brain training was great.
i recently bought a psp very cheap, bought some secondhand classic gow umds and 2 64gb memory cards, popped up some jrpgs, emulators and maybe iam set for my gaming life, psp is certainly ahead of its time...glad i got that..anyone else missing out?grab a psp..u wont regret....
I remember seeing the PSP for the first time in a freshman college programming class. A friend just handed it to me and said hey check this thing out. I was blown away by Ridge Racer. I finally bought my own a year after it was released. I have fond memories of PSP. I really wish they would make a Ridge Racer for Switch.
I love how the psp used in the reveal panel looks like it's been used, with smudges and bits on the screen, that's something that just wouldn't be tolerated anymore, its like our expectations and standards have sub-consciously improved.
Everything seems kinda low budget and cobbled together. Especially the boring slides and shit. Looking back I remember it as an amazing, futuristic presentation and now it just seems kinda strange.
The PSP blew my away. The launch model had such an amazing build quality. Ridge Racer was amazing on the screen and Lumines was the killer puzzle games that Tetris was for the Game Boy.
Smartphone+a good controller can do the job better when it comes to emulation. I mean, if you really want a PSP, then go ahead. I just don't see the point of buying one nowadays unless you used to own one and lost it somehow since PSP is a 10 year old, smartphone-like gadget. I actually own one and it's still working. But even I prefer to use my phone instead.
Thank you SO MUCH Digital Foundry for making these kinds of videos!! I absolutely LOVE your analysis of gaming history. PLEASE continue to make more of these videos!!
Compared to ps2. Sony marketed it as a handheld console but it was far from that. I was largely disappointed because we never got the same games as ps2. and whenever we got a game of the same franchise it was some whack knock-off version of the game.
I'm talking about the year 2005/2006 when the PSP got liberty cities and vice city stories. China town came out in 2009 by that time it was already too late imo.
I always wanted a PSP, it looks like a pretty cool system. I’m definitely going to have to pick one up at some point. Still, the DS was just too amazing not to have back in the day.
3ds right now is easily the greatest pure handheld of all time when you look at its line up. If there was an HD 3ds I would be inclined to call it the greatest console of all time. I preferred my psp over my OG ds though. Where as I only played a few games like persona 4 and killzone on my vita and not much else.
Yeah, seeing the PSP do the things that it did back then, was just mind blowing. I remember drooling over it in gaming magazines and being bummed out that I was too poor to own one lol. Years later, when the thing was already retro and I was in college, I finally bought it and had an absolute blast. Some of the best gaming memories I’ve ever had.
Oh hell yes! New DF Retro is always a treat! Gonna watch this now. Do you think one day you could do a DF Retro on Jet Set Radio? I think it would be really interesting to get a retrospective on the game that pretty much invented cel shading...
Sly2Cooper I don't recall ever seeing one and as far as I can tell I've seen all the DF Retro videos. Also just did a quick search and there's nothing on it. Maybe it featured briefly in another video, or another channel did it?
@DigitalFoundry Wow. Was it really 2004 when PSP and DS was announced? 14 years... I think the main weaknesses with the PSP is the UMD format, the proprietary charge cable, and the battery. The DS is basically like an overclocked GBA
I loved my PSP, but the lack of a second analog really limited gameplay possibilities. When the Vita came out with 2 sticks I was excited to buy one. However, by the time I got around to it I could see that Sony was basically abandoning the system. Really, Sony just failed to market the Vita properly, and they failed to support it with enough Triple A games to bring buyers in. What a shame.
I grew up with both systems. They were both just incredible. I would play bigger games on my PSP, and I would play Nintendo games on my DS. Personally, I preferred my DS. That's mostly due to how reliable the hardware was.
Omg I feel like crying. I was in Middle School when the PSP and DS were announced. I remember seeing both handhelds in the newspaper and bringing it to school to show everyone.
Well im still playing with my PSP a lot, tol many games and my favorite handheld of all time. Just think... you can play PS1 games on it, PS1 is my favorite console ever plus all PSP stuff simply made it my perfect handheld device.
That's the same reason it's the best handheld console to me, it can play PS1 games. All the games I missed as a kid, I can now play through, it wouldve costed a ton of money back in the day to buy and play these games. Now its a lot cheaper, and its portable, helll yea
Don't dis the vita. Sony may have fucked up but the Vita's developers sure as hell didn't. Cyber Sleuth, Lego Marvel Avengers and Yomawari are phenomenal games which really make the vita shine.
Actually it's got a pretty fucking stellar line up of horror and beat em ups as well. Marvel Vs Capcom, Street fighter X Tekken, Arcana Hearts, Skull Girls.
Actor Adam Anouer My vita got stolen. I was pissed off, cause I played pretty much EVERYTHING on there. Hell, being able to remote play with a PS3/PS4 and using it as a controller? Cool!! I used it at my friends house cause they have a PS4 and I have the Xbox One
"How could they launch a UMD Video as a video format with only stereo sound?" Because I always bring a 5.1 audio system with me to watch a movie on a handheld on the go, right? Right?
I know I'm coming in late, but UMD was intended to be a competitive disc format for video. While it never really left the PSP, it's ridiculous to expect it to actually compete as a home video format if it only offers stereo sound and the like.

I don't quite regret it though because I get to play emulators on it on top of PS1 and PSP games~
Not to mention the PSP GO is quite small, it's even smaller than my small old 3DS, while having a slightly larger screen! (To be fair though, the 3DS has two screens, and the clamshell design protects them, the PSP GO has its screen always exposed, and mine already came scratched... Yeah, I got it used)
I also found that putting RetroArch on an M2 card instead of loading it from the internal memory causes it to crash a lot less often...
The PSP was really ahead of it's time, I remember the last game that I bought before moving on was SOCOM: Fire Team bravo 3 and it was for just 10 dollars/euros (back when they were launching the Essentials titles)
Now for the next DF Retro video. It would be interesting to look back at the Xbox 360 reveal (as you guys stated near the end.) or even the whole Xbox One debacle reveal in 2013.
HarryTheGreekGamer Fireteam Bravo 3 was an amazing game. FTB2 was fun too if not for the horrible performance issues.
Watching this with my psp laying on my table 50cm away from me. Such a glorious device.
I remember playing nintendo ds as a teen and it was so cool having nintendo 64 graphics on a handheld in 2004.
Thanks for all of the effort you put in to these videos guys!
satoru iwata was a gem
darsirious yes he was and I thank him everything he did for the industry especially smash (he saved the development of the original smash) but he was the cause of Nintendo's darker days, I'm talking about shovelware and Wii u, gimmicks and bad kid marketing
yes i am aware, but i choose to value him more as a person, gamer, game developer, and all around a very capable person on every aspect of hardware and software than marketing. i choose to see the light rather than the dark.
@@AtomicBoo yeap, but man he's one person that really does learn from his mistakes and pull a 180 at the end
If I'm not mistaken, the 3ds has yet to top the psp
Lolozo214 yup, goes to show the impact of smartphones in general. From mobile gaming to watching videos and social media apps.
I also bought mine then, saved my pocket money and birthday money up to buy it I was 15 at the time.
Absolutely love these videos! I never had PSP and deeply regret selling my OLED Vita.
An hour of DF Retro! Yes please! Love my PSP still, such a great console still to this day.
I'd listen to an entire Iwata retrospective
didyouknowgaming did an excellent one around the time of his passing.
Chris Richfield I knew that, thanks! I just ask for different perspectives, also because I'll never get bored of listening to the man's life
Best Reggie quote is from E3 2005.
What were you playing the UMDs on if you were playing them before the PSP released?
@@townsjim I didn't say I was playing them before the PSP released. I said I had a nice collection of UMDs before the PSP released
RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RACER!
fuck yes. someone gets it.
Remember that one?
These videos have been great. John and Rich make a good duo, and it's a lot of fun looking back on these presentations. Looking forward to the Xbox 360 video!
Cory Soto I'd like to see Tom get in on one of these.
I love these flash back commentaries from past E3s. This is a great lead up for E3 2018. Keep em coming.
PSP had some amazing games
"Had", so the amazing games have just vanished, huh?
Ethor ' salty af huh?
Ridge racer type 4 soundtrack at the beginning of the vid...awesome choice!
one hour of DF retro, here we go
You guys have tapped into a whole new nostalgic well. I think there will be plenty of fuel down there. I hope you guys keep doing videos like this.
It was all an illusion
the first porn i ever saw was on a psp
megazenn22 This is why you can't buy a pre owned psp :s
nah, just buy a white one you wont notice
Yeah, it was my first mobile fapping device.
Same here.
mofomanx10 it was all of ours flip phones was slow
PSP is a phenomenal device. The day I got mine and played Wipeout Pure for the first time was absolutely mind bending. Now I have the Ys games, Lunar, Breath Of fire, Gradius Collection, Valkyria Chronicles II... So many awesome games.
stonerdemon Lol I remember that I only had enough to buy the psp itself. I probably used that umd demo disk more than anyone 😅.
dajam9035 Hahaha, same as me! The demo disk was actually very good. It had a little of everything. I've started collecting PSP games, better do it now before they get insanely expensive. So far the Ys games are the most pricey, luckily I already got all of them at reasonable prices.
stonerdemon Wow I didn't know the price of the games were high.
stonerdemon wipeout pure was so good, plus it had gameshare.
Loundsify It was an incredible achievement for a portable of that era. And Burnout Legends was no slouch either.
You guys really should consider selling DF retro DVDs as merchandise. I'm sure they would fly off the shelf I absolutely love the show.
I'm still using my phat PSP, as a portable PSOne.
This is exactly why the Vita has value to it.
@@freeflowingacid5182 Vita has its own great games.
I'm still using my vita
*PSP WAS A GEM*
TheBlackItalianGamer PS VITA EVEN MORE SO
Bought a psp 1 month ago, downloaded 30gb of games, amazing system
psp IS* a gem
Word, PSP has an amazing library. Vita doesn't even compare.
truly a hidden gem of last gen
And here I was just looking online for a quality replacement housing to give my PSP 1000 life again. Well done!
I just pulled my old psp from the drawers, and playing on it again made me realize what a revolutionary device this was. I spent so much time on this thing, I wish I could travel back in time and experience all this awesomeness from the psp as a kid again.
I loved the last retro E3 throwback! Happy you guys did another one!
Love the Ridge Racer music!
"Ridge Racer Type 4 - Move Me".....sickest videogame track EVER!
Zahid Tabassum Type 4... now THERE'S a game that deserves a remake or remaster!
It's About time Ridge Racee get it's own retrospective episode!
Awe man.. this takes me back to when I was 18.
I feel like the multimedia functionality of the psp and the touchscreen of the DS set the framework of what a modern smartphone is
The first time I saw the PSP was in an import tech shop next to Manchester Picadilly train station in February 2005, which was over 6 months before the official UK release.
2004, what a year for gaming. Halo 2 and the best handheld ever made in the same month? Take me back.
Also Gta Sa 🙌
The best handheld ever made? The DS!?!
i love this in-depth content on older moments in the gaming industry. keep this content up, it's probably my favorite thing to watch!
The PSP did have shaders
2 Pixel shaders and 1 Vertex shader!
So impressive for a handheld of the era, not even the PS2 or 3DS actually had true shaders
I love these types of videos, very relaxing and interesting look at history.
(PSP)First gaming device I ever owned. Will always have a soft spot in my heart
you must be really young then lol
Moses Jonson I'm 16
It's not necessarily correct to say that "PSP has skipped a generation". Because GBA wasn't "basically SNES", it was in between SNES and N64 in terms of graphical capabilities. And PSP was right in between PS1 and PS2. So it was a generation, precisely and exactly.
Right? People calling GBA a portable SNES is stupid. GBA was easily able to run Doom while SNES was struggling in anything 3D. Even the 2d games looked much better on the GBA in terms of animations, color and resolution.
Its not just a generation , the gba is closer to the snes than the n64 and the psp was closer to the ps2 than the ps1
@@PurushNahiMahaPurush so what? Most games still looked like a snes game just as most psp games looked like a ps2 game
Saying that anyone who calls it a protable ness are wrong is like saying doom is not a first person shoter because the engine renders it as a top down
@@PurushNahiMahaPurush Doom was on snes
Dr kawashima brain training was great.
referral madness you mean in your opinion which is just that - your opinion.
The two best handhelds in the 7th generation! I find both systems better than the 3DS & Vita.
But the 3ds can play ds gameboy 2ds and 3ds games?
@@sno19tux can’t play game boy games, and 2ds and 3ds games are the same. So it just plays ds and 3ds games. Plus a virtual console.
The PSP was the best handheld in the 7th generation.
It's great to see Iwata-san smiling as he's presenting the DS, after all these years :)
i recently bought a psp very cheap, bought some secondhand classic gow umds and 2 64gb memory cards, popped up some jrpgs, emulators and maybe iam set for my gaming life, psp is certainly ahead of its time...glad i got that..anyone else missing out?grab a psp..u wont regret....
Very true.
Everything seems kinda low budget and cobbled together. Especially the boring slides and shit. Looking back I remember it as an amazing, futuristic presentation and now it just seems kinda strange.
Hodthesenutz hodthesenutz
The PSP blew my away. The launch model had such an amazing build quality. Ridge Racer was amazing on the screen and Lumines was the killer puzzle games that Tetris was for the Game Boy.
PSPs are going up in value now. Being able to play the entire PS1 library and the entire retro emulator library is amazing.
mofomanx10 It can't play the entire library but it does do a good amount.
Psp go with ps3 controller over Bluetooth
@@myman7336 or you can use the switch
Thank you SO MUCH Digital Foundry for making these kinds of videos!! I absolutely LOVE your analysis of gaming history. PLEASE continue to make more of these videos!!
Im still using psp. I dont know you but psp never gets old. I dont think its a retro machine today. A psp go still feels a modern multimedia machine.
Are you kidding? I got one at launch and it felt outdated back then.
durkadur27
lol what ?
Compared to ps2. Sony marketed it as a handheld console but it was far from that. I was largely disappointed because we never got the same games as ps2. and whenever we got a game of the same franchise it was some whack knock-off version of the game.
durkadur27 dude did you compare psp with ps2? Seriously?
Nintendo fanboys nowadays.
This is great. Like two knowledgeable mates reliving gaming memories - keep it coming!
Yes! just what i needed to have a good sunday.
Over 1 hour long DF Retro episode. Oh boy, Christmas came early this year.
GTA on the go won me over the Nintendo DS. Such great memories made with the PSP.
xXanaXBloodXx GTA China Town on the DS?
I'm talking about the year 2005/2006 when the PSP got liberty cities and vice city stories. China town came out in 2009 by that time it was already too late imo.
Chinatown Wars is on the PSP but yes it originally was a DS exclusive
MoviesNGames007uk *timed exclusive
xXanaXBloodXx the PSP had 3d GTA, While the ds had top-down GTA lol.
That Ridge Racer remix at the end LMAO. John makes the best video editing in DF.
I see and hear Baten Kaitos :( Underrated gem
One of the many gamecube's gems.
this series is great! Even though I've been a Patreon before, this entry convinced me to come back permanently. Looking forward to future episodes
I always wanted a PSP, it looks like a pretty cool system. I’m definitely going to have to pick one up at some point. Still, the DS was just too amazing not to have back in the day.
Please keep these coming. They’re great!
I liked PSP, but DS was an all time great system.
it was for kids PSP was for cool teens and adults
3ds right now is easily the greatest pure handheld of all time when you look at its line up. If there was an HD 3ds I would be inclined to call it the greatest console of all time. I preferred my psp over my OG ds though. Where as I only played a few games like persona 4 and killzone on my vita and not much else.
Owen West switch.
Ivor Couisetyne switch isn't pure mobile. I mostly use my switch on my TV.
inuyasha you sound like a kid with that statement..
All these years later and I'm still playing my PSP and DS. Quality hardware with so many damn good games!
I remember the PSP launch so well. Took me about 4 PSPs to get it right because each one had dead pixel issues.
ron s My psvita has a similar problem
If I'm not mistaken, they featured JSR in on of their videos. I've definately seen a video about JSR on DF Retro.
Sly2Cooper I don't recall ever seeing one and as far as I can tell I've seen all the DF Retro videos. Also just did a quick search and there's nothing on it. Maybe it featured briefly in another video, or another channel did it?
Starting the video with some R4 bgm makes me feel like I'm really back at Real Racing Roots '99!
i love the R4 ost in the backround
I like the background music in this documentary length analysis.
The PSP was born with a dirty screen already. Anyway, for me, was the best handheld ever. Still playing today.
Thx for the awesome video DF!
I traded in my DS for a psp, because the DS had like 2 games for it's first 2 years. At least it felt like 2 years at the time.
Oh man that Iwata interview. What a blast from the past.
@DigitalFoundry
Wow. Was it really 2004 when PSP and DS was announced? 14 years...
I think the main weaknesses with the PSP is the UMD format, the proprietary charge cable, and the battery.
The DS is basically like an overclocked GBA
Gotta have the Nintendo gimmicks tho
Yeah, I remember being on the bus and three people had their DS systems playing MKDS all the time together, time really flies
"I'm about kicking ass, I'm about taking names, and we are about making games" - Reggie
Loved this video format. Looking forward for new ones.
That Iwata interview at the end. What a man he was during this career peak.
Kinda sad sony had to abandoned the handheld console bcoz of the unsuccessful vita.
Don't dis the vita. Sony may have fucked up but the Vita's developers sure as hell didn't. Cyber Sleuth, Lego Marvel Avengers and Yomawari are phenomenal games which really make the vita shine.
Actor Adam Anouer PS Vita is really only exceptional if you're a fan JRPGs tbh. Definitely top notch in that regard. In other areas, not so much.
Actually it's got a pretty fucking stellar line up of horror and beat em ups as well. Marvel Vs Capcom, Street fighter X Tekken, Arcana Hearts, Skull Girls.
Simple Buddy they discontinued it in 2015. I cried
Great format and retrospective. Thanks DF!
"How could they launch a UMD Video as a video format with only stereo sound?"
Because I always bring a 5.1 audio system with me to watch a movie on a handheld on the go, right? Right?
I know I'm coming in late, but UMD was intended to be a competitive disc format for video. While it never really left the PSP, it's ridiculous to expect it to actually compete as a home video format if it only offers stereo sound and the like.
This was GREAT guys, thanks!👍
