    A quick walkthrough of my current darkroom setup. This is the second darkroom I have built. It has some really nice features and some things I can improve upon when I build my next darkroom!
    Sorry about the shaky footage. I will try to be better next time :)
    I learned photography in a darkroom and wanted to share my current setup and workflow. In this age of digital imaging it is hard for me to believe that traditional silver wet printing is basically now an alternative process.
    Film is having an amazing resurgence. Many people are shooting film and scanning negs with amazing results. I want to encourage people to keep the darkroom alive as well!

    Nice tour of your darkroom. I thought about installing a fan to recycle the air, but the fan drove me nuts. I found that the so-called dust issue is actually dissolved solids in the tap water. If you don't wash the negatives with distilled water you do get a lot of specks that I thought was dust. But doing several water washes with distilled water has almost totally eliminated the so-called dust issue. Of course if there is actual dust in the air it could show up on the negatives.

    very nice! suggestion: switch out those axial fans for centrifugal. axials have great velocity but don't do well with static pressures. that fume hood can work, it just needs enough air coming in to the room to match it's output. centrifugal fans are also much quieter

    Dude, love how you just nonchalantly walked through that set-up. It's as good (if only on a smaller scale) as what I used in school. Complete with foot switches and everything. Do you load film to be developed in that same room? I know some folks prefer to have a separate closet (totally sealed) for that sort of thing, but maybe you're doing all of your developing and printing in the same room.

    Just started printing this month! Took a few months to build out the darkroom and get all the tools. Absolutely love your setup! Quick question though, been working with only RC paper and hoping to get into fibre. Do you recommend I start with 5x7 or 8x10?

    • @Distphoto
      @Distphoto  Рік тому +1

      I personally never print much in 5x7. And do a lot on 8x10 and 11x14.
      I would look at it as how much you can save and is it worth it and do you like the size print?
      Also could depend on the format. Not sure I can easily print 5x7 from my 4x5 negs. Never tried. 35 mm and medium format make more sense to me.
      I guess why not try a pack of both and see what you like better.
      You will inevitably be putting some in the trash and it will be easier to learn how to handle fiber paper the smaller it is. It can get kinks fairly easily (the biggest prob)
      Sorry for the Vague answer. Have fun printing!

    • @seyyadwahabdeen
      @seyyadwahabdeen Рік тому

      @@Distphoto Thank you for the prompt response! Yes I do 35mm only. I would love to try both, but right now, given I have poured in a lot of cash into RC, which was just last month. So right now I am debating between 25 sheets of 8x10 and a 100 sheets of 5x7 FB paper.
      Kinks as in curling? So the bigger the paper the more it gets curled up?

    • @Distphoto
      @Distphoto  Рік тому +1

      @@seyyadwahabdeen In that case I would do the 5x7 as it will give you more opportunity to get to know the paper and decide if you want more or not.
      As for the “kinks” I was referring to the paper is just a bit more delicate when wet. With bigger sizes especially it is easier to put creases or bends in the paper and there is no fixing it. Not sure how well I am explaining that but nothing to really worry about. Something you get used to 👍

    • @seyyadwahabdeen
      @seyyadwahabdeen Рік тому

      @@Distphoto
      Understood! I’ll take that advice! Thank you very very much.
      Oh right, gotcha about the kinks. I’ll be careful.
      Last question is,
      I’ve seen videos, 8x10 curls quite a bit. Does 5x7 curl a lot. Only thing I am nervous about is the curling and flattening. I should have just bought a small stash of FB with my RC haul from B&H sigh
      I got quite a bit of RC paper both 8x10 and 5x7. Now I have to pay extra for shipping for just one stack of paper haha
      Thanks again for explaining so kindly!

    Really cool darkroom. I dream once making one. What is the cost of all the setup including matherials for sink and drying cabinet?

    • @Distphoto
      @Distphoto  3 роки тому +1

      The sink and racks were a bit of time and prob (I am guessing as I built them many years ago) $200-300 The enlarger was I believe was around $2,000. ( I you can find nice enlargers for quite a bit cheaper) plumbing maybe $100. washer $300. Chemicals and Paper - A LOT!
      Most of my darkroom was built when I did not have much money for a darkroom.... It really was more of a time commitment and I built and bought things as I could. I was O.K with spending a couple hundred dollars here and there when I could save it up to get something I really wanted.
      I feel anyone could do it if they have a space to do it. I remember at one time I had 3- 4 enlargers people had just given me or I got as a lot sale on craigslist. You really can get set up pretty cheap. The biggest savings for me was making the sinks myself. I wanted a large sink and stainless was just way out of my budget.
      Making them was pretty easy. A mess but pretty easy. Hope that helps some!

    Nice darkroom, what are the inside dimensions of the sink? I've been planning to build one the same way, but can't decide on the dimensions...

    • @Distphoto
      @Distphoto  Рік тому

      It is roughly 8 ft by 30 inches deep. I made it out of mostly scrap wood. Th bottom is just old wall paneling. The fiberglass matting and epoxy coating are super strong so you do not need to get super concerned with making a extremely strong frame. Just strong enough. This sink is over 12 years old now and I have patched two areas twice but very minor. I also will put fresh oil based (Rustoleum gloss black) now and then… think I have once in that time and prob overdue for another. Hope that helps!

    • @ironmonkey1512
      @ironmonkey1512 Рік тому

      @@Distphoto Thanks for the ideas, the enlarger table I built is 3/4 melamine but now that you mention it I think the sink can be built much lighter. I've got some black epoxy pigment to mix in should be good and black.

    what compressor/air jet do you use?

    • @Distphoto
      @Distphoto  2 роки тому

      This is the nozzle I use : www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DCHA3R2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
      The compressor is a VERY old. Sears tank that I remember filling up my box tires with when I was like 10 years old. The thing is still truckin along. My father gave it to me years ago and I put it to use. (not sure of the size but about 3 -4 pancake compressors about.)
      I have two inline filters both I bought at Sears when they were still in business here. Quite a while ago. One filter at the tank side and another filter at the coupler side in the darkroom.
      Hope that helps!

    man, i just bring my enlarger( Meopta Opemus 5) in the batrhroom, then take out when finished. I wish i have darkroom like yours, great job. But that dust is killing me, man. I just accepted that dust will be part of every image i make, its for me, not for sale, so dust is ok

    • @Distphoto
      @Distphoto  2 роки тому +1

      I have found (at least for me) dust is somewhat inevitable. I try to be as clean and dust free as I can, but trying to eliminate every last speck is very energy intensive and time consuming.
      So for me on final prints I take extra time but in the end it is best to be able to also deal with specks on your prints. Taking the time to learn how to spy is a must.
      Thanks for watching.
      If I was you. Before you set up run the shower with Hot water and steam up the bathroom and then let it settle. Then set up the enlarger. This will help with dust floating around for sure 👍

    I'm planning to make a darkroom but guess what, I do not have access to running water any suggestions? plus from where you bought the air compressor and the vacuum I want to buy the same, can you share the link :) I live in the dustiest area in the world "KSA" so it will help me a lot

    • @Distphoto
      @Distphoto  3 роки тому

      You do not need running water in the room but would need water close by…. For washing things look up the Ilford method.. basically you fill and dump the tray 5 times for archival wash but could be done outside the darkroom. You can bring water in and use a holding tank… something like this. www.amazon.com/Coleman-2000014870-Water-Carrier-Gal/dp/B000088O9Y/ref=asc_df_B000088O9Y/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=194884170462&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2717229276828953823&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9019122&hvtargid=pla-310752838282&psc=1. Just a few ideas of the top of my head.

    • @Distphoto
      @Distphoto  3 роки тому

      The compressor is a really old craftsman tank… prob 40 years old…. The important thing is to have inline filters so you do not blast your negatives with water/dirt from the lines. The vacuum is a standard Rigid shopvac I bought at local homedepot . They are both outside the room in a small closet and I rigged up the lines through the wall. Hope that helps! I can try to get links when I get a chance👍
