@James xxx that might be the case, it still got me to re-evaluate how I sleep and change my behaviour accordingly. I got additional information from the Huberman Lab podcast to fine tune my day even more. Whatever Matt might have gotten wrong, I don't know, but I applied his advice to my day to day life and kept following it, if I felt like it worked.

It's only looking back I realize how thankful I am to Matthew Walker. I was a perpetual 5-7 hr sleeper (usually 6ish) and was constantly caffeinated and tired. Hearing him on Joe Rogan's podcast, I decided to test out actually sticking to a routine of 8 hrs every night (min 7.5, some nights 9 or 10). And I can't say enough about the benefits this has given me. I thought I didn't have time for that extra hour due to work, but now with more sleep I'm so productive I have way more free time even with that hour lost. I no longer drink coffee, yet feel my focus, energy and overall willpower is 10x higher than when I had to caffeinate myself to get a job done. It just feels like I have more brainpower, my anxiety dropped incredibly lower, and I'm just way happier overall. So thanks again Matt Walker, keep spreading the gospel of sleep!
his confidence.. and humility are also quite endearing, he's calm about admitting he tackled an age old question with a 2 year timeframe, and humble in admitting he was at the 20 year mark.

I think he simply manages his time very well. He has a video about his daily schedule, and once you see that, it makes sense that he's able to be so productive over time.

His answer to the meaning of life really hit me, it's such a simplistic answer on the surface but I found it so profound at the same time. For whatever reason it really grabbed me, brought tears to my eyes while listening on the train.
Matt was the only person who educated me on the fact that weed suppresses rem sleep. My sleep and overall quality of life has improved drastically since I quit smoking and I have him to thank
Ironically this knowledge led me to smoke/vape MORE (in evenings) to avoid edibles with their longer-lasting effects. That said I'm low dose with either, and wouldn't recommend either for falling asleep.

Matthew is a great educator, one of the few books I gave 5/5 stars, it's that good. It totally changed my mind about the priority between diet, exercise and sleep.
Even if we take exercise out of the equation, before reading his book, I always thought that a good healthy diet is basically all you need and had a sort of "we sleep when we're dead" mentality. It turns out that sleep is much more important before my priority was like diet > exercise > sleep, now diet > sleep > exercise, but diet and exercise start to move on the same level tbh.

Did you see recent article in Apple news? Made the conclusion of sleeping alone is much wiser and better for my sleep I’d rather sleep on a hard floor with few blankets instead with my partner in a bed . Although I have extremely bad back and I’ve probably increased my % of getting dementia ten fold just past two years with averaging 2-4 hours of napping through the night . I only recently started sleeping on floor and felt it’s better .
I feel a kind of tranquil wisdom from Matt, he feels balanced between emotional intelligence and rationality. Balance is a beautiful thing. Hard to obtain, and hard to keep.

Actually about a month ago, I had an experience where I had no sense of identity in a dream, and awoke in the same state.... no sense of who I was, or what my past had been. It took about 10 seconds from upon waking (amid increasing concern) for everything to "snap back" into place. I've had this happen 4-5 times in my life, always when having what feels to be a very deep sleep. I have been experimenting with potassium supplementation lately, and have been experiencing sleep deeper than I have in quite a few years. I've asked several people whether they have experienced this, but have yet to find someone who has.
Look into Ramana Maharshi and forget about supplements. If you begin to meditate and investigate your identity you will likely make great progress. M.: Sleep is not ignorance; it is your pure state. Wakefulness is not knowledge; it is ignorance. There is full awareness in sleep; there is total ignorance in waking. Your real nature covers both, and extends beyond. The Self is beyond knowledge and ignorance. Sleep, dream and waking are only modes passing before the Self. They proceed whether you are aware or not. That is the state of the Jnani in whom pass the states of waking, samadhi, deep sleep and dream, like the bulls moving, standing or being unyoked when the passenger is asleep as aforesaid. These questions are from the point of view of the ajnani; otherwise these questions do not arise. (From 'Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi' 313)
I've experienced this multiple times generally because of a heroic dose of psilocybin the night before or excessive amounts of high grade marijuana. A few times from being awakened during night terrors or sleep walking.
This is often referred to as ego death and very common when taking high doses of psychedelics, infact some people intentionally try to experience this, just because of the many positive effects you can have after the experience. It can make you see life from a completely different perspective.
Mathew walker changed my life🙏. I struggle to begin to have words to describe. narcolepsy impacts every single aspect of life and is more terrifying then anyone can ever imagine, and that's just the day time sleepiness the handful of other symptoms are enough to consider giving up. My narcolepsy went from aggressively dangerous to nearly comfortable thanks to this wonderful human being. I've had many doctors who could clearly care less about my well-being: 1 doctor told me to stop my cataplexy just not to laugh or get angry. 2 none of them REALLY gave me actions or information to help... scientists are the best doctors..👍 THANKS MATTHEW WALKER! Oh and Lex is a bad ass too, your killing it! your an inspiration thanks for what your do and thanks for another great podcast 👍
I am, as a chemist that has a t-shirt that says : " eat, sleep, chemistry, repeat", utterly fascinated by your ideas about enjoying your life as a scientist even if it doesn't make any sense to other people. I really respect Matt for recognising and explaining that he sounded a bit puritanical in the book and in the public a few years ago. I actually got quite anxious about my own sleep, coffee (which I really enjoy), and circadian rythm.
Matt Walker and Lex Fridman are legends, and are as wise and fascinating as they are also humble and curious to keep learning and understanding. This conversation spans some very interesting, useful, sometimes even unexpected, territory, and is WELL worth watching and listening to, I would say, for anyone who can take the time to do so.
I just want to thank this man for making me feel like I'm not inferior for not being a morning person. I've been given so much shit my whole life called lazy and unmotivated and everything in between. But i'm productive as all hell. I'm just productive between noon and midnight.

Lex, I don't know if you will read this, but, if I remember correctly, when I first saw one or two videos in which you appeared, I didn't like you. I think you were criticizing someone I admired, or whatever (not that you care). However, I have grown to love your vulnerability, mental acuity, and willingness to discuss things we the listeners either have battled with ourselves or didn't even think needed to be discussed! This interview, in particular, was simply amazing. Matt is a great guy with a huge heart. He is genuine (from what I can tell), just as you are. I really wish you success with your channel, teaching, and all you do. Your upbringing (Russian, if I am not mistaken) really seems to have prepared you to help us "Westerners" see things from a different perspective. This interview went way beyond sleep and has encouraged me to get back into my passions (while sustaining them with good sleep haha), some of which include research and asking big questions like you guys do. 10/10. I hope to watch this interview 2/3 more times.

Wow, Matt was super articulate and measured in his responses. I love his work and have read his book: Why We Sleep. I've seen lots of interviews with Matt, but Lex added a very unique and deep element that brought out aspects of Matt that I haven't seen before.
Dr Walker's book 'Why We Sleep'...is a fantastic insight to NOT only Why...but WHAT happens when going into the 'Daily Coma'. Sleeping well must be the single most important piece to staying awake for it.
This guy changed my life to the better. Three years ago I saw him on Joe Rogans Podcast and was in the " all nighter are ok now and then" and "sometimes you need to sacrifice sleep to get things done / increase your free time" attitdue big time. After I saw it I really tried to get 7.5 hours of sleep every day (it wasn't always possible to get it on one shot because of my shitty job but if I couldn't I tried to sleep after work that day). After all that time I can say I got way less sick and if I got sick it wasn't that bad. I became more productive and creative after all that time I now really can feel it if I'm sleep deprived and got "addicted" to get enough sleep. So if you are unsure I would say give it a try at least for 3 months after that you won't go back ever again. If you have to manage your time *do not cut your sleeping time* search for other things to cut but not sleep. If you skip sleep your wear and tear on your body is too high and you will pay the price either now (by becoming sick easier and thus loosing all your time you got from all nighter anyway) or later with heart attacks and brain failures.

Why We Sleep is one of my favorite books. It's incredibly heartfelt and compassionate. Even besides the vast amounts of referenced research, the advice is really impactful on a human level. It helped me make more conscientious choices about how to spend my time, awake and asleep, in general.

His points about Ramadan actually seem helpful when you look at it in the context of the goals of the spiritual month: it’s encouraged to stay up and pray. Sex is not allowed while fasting (sunrise to sunset), etc

47:00 I'm the same, very high tolerance for caffeine. Usually I drink about 1L of coffee a day but I've had plenty of days when I drank 2L. Most days it's 1L of coffee in the morning and 2L of green tea in the afternoon and evening :)
Well I've only started drinking coffee heavily when I quit smoking, about 8 and a half years ago; I did that from one day to the next after smoking 10-15 strong cigarettes a day for 10 years or so. My sleep patterns haven't changed that much. In fact if I drink less or not at all for a week or so I sleep exactly the same. My heart rate and blood pressure are also normal. So it doesn't seem to have a strong effect on me.
I was pretty chubby because of reduced physical activity during the pandemic so I cut my food intake by about 2/3 from ~1800 kcal to 600 kcal or less, single meal taken at mid day or slightly later. The reduced food intake and spacing the last meal to about 8 hours before I go to bed seemed to have added about an hour of sleep while drinking more/less coffee/tea doesn't seem to do much.
I just recently watched Matt Walker's interview with Andrew Huberman and it was just packed with biology. I find it quite interesting that this interview with Lex actually covers different aspects of sleep/brain. I thoroughly enjoyed both.

I have issues with stress and anxiety. If I don't get a good night's sleep, 8ish hours, it really increases my anxiety that next day. One of the reasons it's improved over the years is due to getting good sleep and rest in general.
I really enjoyed meditating on this quite observant notion that "anything we do today will seem foolish to the people 100 years from now". Touché, sir! Take it easy guys! (But take it ;-)

Unfortunately, even though sleep is vital and some stuff claimed by Walker is true, he systematically misinterpretes scientific data and commits research misconduct. Just search 'Matthew Walker Guzey' for a total debunk of his book Why We Sleep
Many people would assume that sleeping is a loss of productivity. The case to made is efficiency and optimization. LEX, sleep the neccessary amount according to how you feel. Just bc someone says you should sleep more doesnt mean you should produce less. I personally sleep 6-8 depending on how hard a day i had. Wake up every morning no alarm and always eat at the same times. It works for me on every level. I would love to see you try this. I also would like you to try and quit caffiene and coffee.

Ironically this knowledge led me to smoke/vape MORE (in evenings) to avoid edibles with their longer-lasting effects. That said I'm low dose with either, and wouldn't recommend either for falling asleep.

I never dreamed when I smoked weed. Alcohol has a similar affect on me as well. Probably a disruption in deep sleep.
But now you’re not smoking weed and giving yourself access to ultra rapid mind body improvement. (Yeah yeah, muh ‘can get that without weed just fine’, ok).

I keep imagine these two..out on the range roping calf's, returning to a campfire, then carrying on about memory enhancing, triple espresso's & skipping two days sleep in order to collaborate with silicon valley think tanks.., man Im so deeply grateful not to be so scattered as to what a valuable life means🎈

Matthew is a great educator, one of the few books I gave 5/5 stars, it's that good. It totally changed my mind about the priority between diet, exercise and sleep.

Even if we take exercise out of the equation, before reading his book, I always thought that a good healthy diet is basically all you need and had a sort of "we sleep when we're dead" mentality. It turns out that sleep is much more important before my priority was like diet > exercise > sleep, now diet > sleep > exercise, but diet and exercise start to move on the same level tbh.

Did you see recent article in Apple news? Made the conclusion of sleeping alone is much wiser and better for my sleep I’d rather sleep on a hard floor with few blankets instead with my partner in a bed . Although I have extremely bad back and I’ve probably increased my % of getting dementia ten fold just past two years with averaging 2-4 hours of napping through the night . I only recently started sleeping on floor and felt it’s better .

Actually about a month ago, I had an experience where I had no sense of identity in a dream, and awoke in the same state.... no sense of who I was, or what my past had been. It took about 10 seconds from upon waking (amid increasing concern) for everything to "snap back" into place. I've had this happen 4-5 times in my life, always when having what feels to be a very deep sleep. I have been experimenting with potassium supplementation lately, and have been experiencing sleep deeper than I have in quite a few years. I've asked several people whether they have experienced this, but have yet to find someone who has.
Don’t take too much potassium.
Look into Ramana Maharshi and forget about supplements. If you begin to meditate and investigate your identity you will likely make great progress.

I've experienced this multiple times generally because of a heroic dose of psilocybin the night before or excessive amounts of high grade marijuana. A few times from being awakened during night terrors or sleep walking.
This is often referred to as ego death and very common when taking high doses of psychedelics, infact some people intentionally try to experience this, just because of the many positive effects you can have after the experience. It can make you see life from a completely different perspective.
Mathew walker changed my life🙏. I struggle to begin to have words to describe. narcolepsy impacts every single aspect of life and is more terrifying then anyone can ever imagine, and that's just the day time sleepiness the handful of other symptoms are enough to consider giving up. My narcolepsy went from aggressively dangerous to nearly comfortable thanks to this wonderful human being. I've had many doctors who could clearly care less about my well-being: 1 doctor told me to stop my cataplexy just not to laugh or get angry. 2 none of them REALLY gave me actions or information to help... scientists are the best doctors..👍 THANKS MATTHEW WALKER! Oh and Lex is a bad ass too, your killing it! your an inspiration thanks for what your do and thanks for another great podcast 👍

I really respect Matt for recognising and explaining that he sounded a bit puritanical in the book and in the public a few years ago. I actually got quite anxious about my own sleep, coffee (which I really enjoy), and circadian rythm.
Matt Walker and Lex Fridman are legends, and are as wise and fascinating as they are also humble and curious to keep learning and understanding. This conversation spans some very interesting, useful, sometimes even unexpected, territory, and is WELL worth watching and listening to, I would say, for anyone who can take the time to do so.
I just want to thank this man for making me feel like I'm not inferior for not being a morning person. I've been given so much shit my whole life called lazy and unmotivated and everything in between. But i'm productive as all hell. I'm just productive between noon and midnight.

Lex, I don't know if you will read this, but, if I remember correctly, when I first saw one or two videos in which you appeared, I didn't like you. I think you were criticizing someone I admired, or whatever (not that you care). However, I have grown to love your vulnerability, mental acuity, and willingness to discuss things we the listeners either have battled with ourselves or didn't even think needed to be discussed!
This interview, in particular, was simply amazing. Matt is a great guy with a huge heart. He is genuine (from what I can tell), just as you are. I really wish you success with your channel, teaching, and all you do. Your upbringing (Russian, if I am not mistaken) really seems to have prepared you to help us "Westerners" see things from a different perspective.
This interview went way beyond sleep and has encouraged me to get back into my passions (while sustaining them with good sleep haha), some of which include research and asking big questions like you guys do. 10/10. I hope to watch this interview 2/3 more times.

I've seen lots of interviews with Matt, but Lex added a very unique and deep element that brought out aspects of Matt that I haven't seen before.
Dr Walker's book 'Why We Sleep'...is a fantastic insight to NOT only Why...but WHAT happens when going into the 'Daily Coma'. Sleeping well must be the single most important piece to staying awake for it.
Don’t ever change ~ Please always stay as genuine as you are.
This guy changed my life to the better. Three years ago I saw him on Joe Rogans Podcast and was in the " all nighter are ok now and then" and "sometimes you need to sacrifice sleep to get things done / increase your free time" attitdue big time. After I saw it I really tried to get 7.5 hours of sleep every day (it wasn't always possible to get it on one shot because of my shitty job but if I couldn't I tried to sleep after work that day). After all that time I can say I got way less sick and if I got sick it wasn't that bad. I became more productive and creative after all that time I now really can feel it if I'm sleep deprived and got "addicted" to get enough sleep. So if you are unsure I would say give it a try at least for 3 months after that you won't go back ever again. If you have to manage your time *do not cut your sleeping time* search for other things to cut but not sleep. If you skip sleep your wear and tear on your body is too high and you will pay the price either now (by becoming sick easier and thus loosing all your time you got from all nighter anyway) or later with heart attacks and brain failures.

Why We Sleep is one of my favorite books. It's incredibly heartfelt and compassionate. Even besides the vast amounts of referenced research, the advice is really impactful on a human level. It helped me make more conscientious choices about how to spend my time, awake and asleep, in general.

His points about Ramadan actually seem helpful when you look at it in the context of the goals of the spiritual month: it’s encouraged to stay up and pray. Sex is not allowed while fasting (sunrise to sunset), etc

Currently skipped a good night's sleep while listening to Matt Walker: Sleep podcast. Life is interesting. And so is sleep.
47:00 I'm the same, very high tolerance for caffeine. Usually I drink about 1L of coffee a day but I've had plenty of days when I drank 2L. Most days it's 1L of coffee in the morning and 2L of green tea in the afternoon and evening :)
Holy crap, how though?
Well I've only started drinking coffee heavily when I quit smoking, about 8 and a half years ago; I did that from one day to the next after smoking 10-15 strong cigarettes a day for 10 years or so. My sleep patterns haven't changed that much. In fact if I drink less or not at all for a week or so I sleep exactly the same. My heart rate and blood pressure are also normal. So it doesn't seem to have a strong effect on me.
I was pretty chubby because of reduced physical activity during the pandemic so I cut my food intake by about 2/3 from ~1800 kcal to 600 kcal or less, single meal taken at mid day or slightly later. The reduced food intake and spacing the last meal to about 8 hours before I go to bed seemed to have added about an hour of sleep while drinking more/less coffee/tea doesn't seem to do much.
I just recently watched Matt Walker's interview with Andrew Huberman and it was just packed with biology. I find it quite interesting that this interview with Lex actually covers different aspects of sleep/brain. I thoroughly enjoyed both.

I have issues with stress and anxiety. If I don't get a good night's sleep, 8ish hours, it really increases my anxiety that next day. One of the reasons it's improved over the years is due to getting good sleep and rest in general.

Lex this conversation was awesome. You have such a unique style of asking questions and sharing. Matt's work is so interesting.
Many people would assume that sleeping is a loss of productivity. The case to made is efficiency and optimization. LEX, sleep the neccessary amount according to how you feel. Just bc someone says you should sleep more doesnt mean you should produce less. I personally sleep 6-8 depending on how hard a day i had. Wake up every morning no alarm and always eat at the same times. It works for me on every level. I would love to see you try this. I also would like you to try and quit caffiene and coffee.
