Thanks to those who said the blades are on upside down. Sometimes when I’m making these videos I miss the forest for the trees. I was so gobsmacked by the fact they were brand new blades I didn’t even notice they were upside down!!! 😂
I started watching thinking "hey this guy sounds like the guitologist of Scar my guitar Dumpster Paul fame" and sure enough.. glad to find this, love the rescue and restore stuff.
Use carb cleaner to clean those pull start clutches. Lubing them up is a very short term fix. Oil just attracts 4 times as much dirt which you’ll be using carb cleaner on the next time. Leave them dry!
Blades are on upside down. As soon as you lifted it i saw the bogging down issue. I worked at a saw shop and people were changing blades themselves and putting them on upside down, then bring them to me because they didn't cut well and the engine was low on power. After a while, I looked at the blades first.
@dustinclary736 he has the balls to go outside of his comfort zone, which is guitar and guitar amp repair and Design, and I am always impressed at how he can figure things out as he goes along. Truly a man after my own heart.
nice mower, they generally make decent equipment troy built, Troy-Bilt products are manufactured in multiple locations across the United States, including Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi. The company's headquarters are in Valley City, Ohio. Troy-Bilt is part of the Stanley Black & Decker family of brands, which was acquired in 2021. .. so decent stuff compared to say chyna or taiwan
Man i need to get back out on trash nights... Our neighbor earlier this year happened upon a guy setting out a 5000 Watt generator said it quit running. He put in the shop and it was a couple of bad wires and old gas. For $160.00 in repairs he got himself a nice little generator.
@@Fixologist1I have the scheduled pick-up days now in my area in a four mile radius. M-Tu-W-Th trash goes out for pick-up the next day. I figure we'll do both a night run and early morning run.
You usually put those ball bearings in the starter dry. No grease, oil, nuttin! Lube can slow the balls from moving when trying to start. The only oil goes in that small hole on top of that starter shaft like you did. Man is that deck corroded. That's what happens when you put the mower away after mowing wet grass without cleaning. Needs to be stripped and repainted with Rustoleum paint. Looks they they ran over something which stopped the blades and cracked that timing pulley. Hence, new blades.
The filthy rich in my village destroy what they throw out, if they can't have it, neither will anybody else. I saw a snow blower/thrower/what ever with the auger so mangled they either took a BFH to it or ran over some bricks.
It's possible that one unit is plastic in order to be the deliberate weak spot. It'll crack and fail should a blade get caught, hopefully preventing damage to both spindles or other components.
Get ready to re-cap that bose thing! Eventually it will only sing the 60 Hz song o death. Local tech wanted 70% of new unit $ to fix mine, so it went on the curb for somebody else to pay for. The mowing action was way funnier at 2X speed.
I'm thinking the balls might not have rolled into place because they were sticking in the grease, which was probably not intended to e there in the first place. They probably took it apart when it was clogged with normal dirt and grass, then cleaned it up and put too heavy a lubricant in it...just a theory.
You put little too much oil into the clutch assembly you just need to keep the shaft oiled all the oil in house anytime you tip the mower over on it side good chance will leak out anyway
great mower but everything for that deck is EXPENSIVE, timing gears (originaly plastic and easy to break, but replaced with aluminum)near $150 each spindle assemblies if broken are also crazy spindle shafts and blades cost significantly more than other mowers as well.
should never be any grease or oil around those balls. under that hole in the top is a piece of felt you put a few drops of oil on to lubricate the shaft to keep the clutch from sticking to it.
Those mulcher/mowers are a pain, especially in damp grass, since there's no way for the clippings to get out from under the deck.😜 Watching you struggling with that blade clutch/drive clutch abomination would make me want to get rid of that blade clutch release and have it just lock in via the engagement handle. Those companies are so busy trying to protect people from themselves, that the product becomes almost unusable. Yet, people prove their stupidity all that much more, by suing the company for something that a little common sense would easily prevent.🙄 Those IC series Briggs are really good engines, and if you keep the oil changed, they'll practically last the life of the mower! I can't believe how much they want for that cast aluminum timing pulley.😲 That's just crazy considering most of the replacements come out of China anyway, even if the mower was produced in the U.S. As far as vintage commercial grade mowers, the only thing better than the Troy-bilt were the old Gravely tractor/mowers. They were practically indestructible!😎
You never put any kind of lube on the clutch balls. This will cause the balls to stick to the outside of the clutch housing. The balls and the clutch must remain dry.
@@Fixologist1 I probably let a conduit stop or if there’s a break hit the break and let it come to complete stop before shifting it into reverse. I just see like that’s gonna blow the tranny

There is a tool for the starter clutch, but I use a large pipe wrench
you should restream JCPS shcoolboards meetings with the chat on
that is definitely, without a doubt, one of the mowers of all time.
It is an all time mower.

I think you are supposed to at least oil the shaft a bit with thin oil. I probably did put a bit too much, but I think it'll be ok.
@@Fixologist1yes the shaft ,but not the bearings they must move freely. Sand the shaft if it continues to grab and squeal.
I am very glad you found that a excellent mower good for you .Their are people out there that rather buy a new than try to fix it ex video.

When you throw something away you usually end up needing it soon after
Wow what a great find!
Very!
I’m at 15:25… anyone else notice the blades were upside down or am I seeing things?
No grease ever in that clutch system.
Yes! That was the issue in the first place. Somebody greased it beforehand and it collected dirt and dust.
The sound that the Ratchet makes is very calming 😊
I’ve always liked that sound.

What a find Brad, I love your fixologist channel..🎸🎸🎻🎻
Glad you enjoy it!
Over complicated operation of the mower as it is , but its very good fined and repair ect , well done , all the best

Then installed new ones side up down! Curve goes towards deck.
I´m really surprised to find the Magnetron sticker on a motor from 1994, I always thought they only stuck them on there until 1989.
great score brad with that troy lawmore dude wow cool
Unreal what people throw out.

You should LS swap it
Great job on the repair but.....Looks like it would be better suited for areas with less obstacles. Commercial use maybe????
It's better on my front yard, which only has one tree. I am getting the hang of it the more I've used it. Not sure If I want to sell it yet or not.
The best was when you used an impact socket with the gun. Not a regular socket..Bravo Brad..
Got a bunch of them at estate auction.
Some people dump everything that quits working for whatever reason.
I wonder if the plastic pulley is intended as a failure point.
Its all ball bearings nowadays!
That mower looks like a PITA to operate
reminds me of a world lawn branded mower
It's possible that one unit is plastic in order to be the deliberate weak spot. It'll crack and fail should a blade get caught, hopefully preventing damage to both spindles or other components.
That's not a bad thought, but the service manual actually shows two of the aluminum cast spindles. I think the sacrificial part is the belt.
@@Fixologist1 in that case, yep, probably! Can't beat that curb find.
@@Fixologist1sweet machine!
the timing gears were originaly plastic, new version is aluminum, one of those has been replaced already as can be seen when he took the cover off.
The lightest oil only, and sparingly on those balls, no grease.

There is a chicken run off the side of the garage. Yes.
