The festival of Dhanteras
officially marks the beginning of the five-day-long festivals of Diwali. It is the first day of the festive season and is marked to welcome in Danvantri Ji from Samudra Manthan. It is an auspicious day for all Hindus and it is believed that buying any kind of gold, silver or household utensils brings fortune and wealth. People buy expensive metals and ornaments and worship them on
Diwali before using them. Some people also buy a broom, which is believed to wipe out any kind of negative energy from the house and invite happiness and prosperity.
The festival of Dhanteras is celebrated on the 13th lunar day of the dark fortnight (Krishna paksha) of the Hindu month Kartik. This year the festival of Dhanteras will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 2. It is followed by Choti Diwali, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj.
