The most incredible dog I ever owned was a border collie. I knew nothing of training, but he instinctively worked sheep following my hand signals. Watching him cut out a yearling ram from the small flock of about 50 sheep so a buyer could look at him was simply unreal: how he knew which ram I wanted is beyond me. The buyer said to me, "To hell with the ram, what'll you take for the dog?" The dog was with me until he died years later: there are no words to describe him.
Sorry for your loss. However, on a happier note, looks like the two of you made very fond memories to share with people like myself. I plan on owning a border in the very near future.
My first dog after i'm married was a border collie. She was so incredibly smart. I loved her dearly. She disappeared after her second litter And we believe she was bitten by a copperhead , she would have never left her babies. I couldn't even watch a dog food commercial for over two years.
My 2 year old Border Collie Winston thoroughly enjoyed watching this video with his feet up on the table in front of the big screen. He tries flanking the sheep as they get close to the edge of the screen. I never see him as intent as he is when watching herding videos.
@@theamericanjoeshow When I was growing up my father got a German Shepherd from a cattle rancher, the dog was a puppy and never set eye on a cow. This dog was bred with my aunt's Shepherd, and we adopted one of her pups. Father and son having never seen a cow instinctively knew what to do when they came upon some open range cattle that wandered on our property. They both ran half circles around the cattle and gathered them into a group without any prompting, so yeah after so many generations I guess they just know what they're supposed to do.
what a perfect dog life, good health, purpose, room to run, friendship and love.❤❤ If only people would be satisfied with these gifts, what a better world 🌎. Thank you.
We had a pet Border Collie who was not trained, but she was so smart. We had a small horse boarding business and she was so good with the horses. We allowed her to have total freedom on our 7 acres to come and go as she pleased and every morning she walked the entire perimeter never leaving our property. I still miss her after almost 40 years.😢
I’ll bet you do! We had an Aussie who was the same way! He would come & tell me when his Pit/Mastiff brother would sneak out the gate or was trying to get in the cat food! He knew which ball was which, tennis, soccer, basketball, etc. He always wanted everybody in the same room or all together outside so he would try & herd every one!
I always wonder who chooses the music to match the video. Stacy? Sean? I was a classic orchestra musician for almost entire life so I do pay a lot of attention and every video is matching with a beautiful music. Whoever it is , there is a very talented artist in your home. Bravo!!
Herding dogs like this fascinate me…they are so knowledgeable, agile, and focused. I was in Montana a few years ago when a group of cowboys was driving a large herd of cattle to a new pasture….and we were stopped on the highway as the herd was in our path. The dogs on command jumped off of the vehicles they were on, and moved that entire herd up and across the highway, and into their new grassland. It was amazing to watch those dogs…. They knew exactly where to go, what to do, and got the job done quickly. One of the cow men was riding his horse up the line of traffic and apologizing to the motorists for their delay. I told him no apology was necessary, and thanked him for the terrific show that the dogs put on for us.
It’s always so fascinating to see how completely distinct each dog is. From Echos youthful energy and drive (albeit sometimes appears quite stubborn) to how Kate is clearly experienced and knows a ton of what to do and even, at times, seems to say, “ chill, Sean, I got this…”… to storms and how calm and eager to please she is…
Saying an animal is a dog is like saying an animal is a human. Sure, there are some general features, but they have their own personalities. My Dad tells me border collies are also good at working cattle.
Absolutely exciting to watch true working dogs in action. Here in Australia there are too many of these dogs stuck in backyards not able to use their craft. I live in a rural area where I can see sheepdogs working cattle and sheep regularly. It raises up the hairs on my arms every time. Thank you for sharing your dogs, they are magnificent.
Wow, Storm comes across as so experienced in comparison to Kate's exuberance. Storm is quite content to lay down while Kate is moving the sheep and she isn't needed, or to slow down when the sheep require it. Kate comes across as thrilled to be out there and eager to please. They make a great team- I love watching how they work together without getting in each other's way!
I saw a border collie that had never seen a sheep in her life do it out of instinct. No training needed with that dog to herd. However the training was only needed for giving directions to where the herd had to go. Keeping the sheep together was already ingrained in her DNA.
I had absolutely no idea how mesmerizing watching dogs herding sheep would be! It amazes me how one man and two dogs can maneuver a large number of sheep the way you do. Thank you for your channel. I’ve learned so much. I learned, along with how you tell the dogs what to do, that sheep run a lot! And that they follow each other, and get confused. It’s all just Wow! I love it all!
I can vouch for that as I have one. I also have three great pyrenees and bernese mountain dogs but pound for pound the strength and agility of the border collies surpasses. At least here on this farm. I enjoyed this video very mych.

My only real-life exposure to sheepdogs was in the 80’s in Germany watching a shepherd commanding his German Shepherds to move a flock that was grazing on the American post I was at. It was amazing. I get a little bit teary-eyed watching dogs do the work they were bred for and love. I’m thankful I saw it in real-life at least once. Thank you for bringing back a wonderful memory.
I just came upon this video. I love watching well trained border collies doing what they were born to do, herding animals. Your Kate and Storm are such well trained dogs and did a great job.
We love watching your border collies masterfully guiding and herding, even while keeping the quick moving a large herd through a complicated path. Great video! Love their constant vigil as well as they mind what you tell them, taking your calls and cues and translating them into controlling where you want the sheep.
That was amazing. The Go Pro footage on the dog shows how incredibly hard they work, not to mention the super herding skills. The way they look back at you - waiting for a command. Beautiful, intelligent Doggos who want to work and please you. Fabulous filming.
Lol the green tupp was a busy beaver!!! These two working together is a beautiful thing to watch! The way Storm stays behind and then becomes a guide at times is mindblowing!! Great video, Sean🤗
Immense sense of peace from watching sheeps getting herded. Love the collie camera angles... ear tips flopping 😍 Thank you for sharing a part of your day in the open pastures.
Border collies are just very simply, the best dogs in the world. It's been my privilege to have had 2 in my life some years ago. Loyal, smart, mischievous, nosy, loopy, brilliant, brilliant bundles of intelligent energy. Still missed to this day but watching these videos is just a joy!! Thank you.
"best dogs in the world"? That's a very thoughtless statement. I love all dogs (except pit bulls) and I appreciate border collies, but I sure would not want to own one.
@Thor Nil . No, sorry, it's my opinion that they're the best, that's all. I don't mind if you agree or not actually. And I don't think it's any different to saying you don't like pitbulls. And opinions are, of course, like butts, every has one, but sometimes they stink, but we should be able to express our opinions and respect each other's opinions. I think it's that simple, really. So let's not try to tell each other what to say. Goodnight!
Absolutely beautiful. Everything from Kate and Storm, to the lambs, scenery, music, your prompts, yes. The harness shots give up close dogs view of what they see. Thank you for sharing!
This is awesome to sit here in a big city in middle of USA and watch sheep herding with these beautiful dogs at 330am. Love your dogs, so smart just waiting on your next order doing their job and loving it.
It seems to my untrained eye that though they listen to your every word, being highly trained they know what they’re doing and the one sits down, he’s waiting to see what the sheep do before reacting. This saves energy too. They are so intelligent, it blows my mind! Beautiful to watch! Thank you. 💕👏💕👏💕
These border collies are so enjoyable to watch! It is wonderful to see a working breed working and enjoying it thoroughly!! Yes! It's great that Sean knows the personality of each dog and uses positive enforcement for them. The dogs know Sean so well! ❤
Sean, I’ve had a rough day of teaching 12-14 Agriculture. Thank you so much for this great video. You are living my dream. As a child, I always told my parents that I wanted to be a sheep herder in Montana. That’s a long way from Louisiana. I became an ag teacher instead and at 62 still teach my kids to shear sheep. I will share this with my classes tomorrow.
Absolutely beautiful to watch. What amazing dogs. My Australian Shepherd only has my young grand children to heard but he does a good job keeping them out of where they can’t be, thank you for sharing this 🙏🏻
That was tricky! Storm really understands the assignment 💕 Loved the doggie cam shame it got tangled in bushes. You should invent a doggie ear wig 😁. Thanks for sharing!
God- I love Border Collies! So beautiful, athletic, smart! If I could figure out how to fit one into my active elderly life style I'd get one tomorrow! Such beautiful creatures!!
I got one from a rescue agency. She was an Amish puppy mill breeder and spent 3 years in a cage. She's now blossomed into a gorgeous, sweet, gentle, calm, and smart dog. Best dog I've ever had. I'm in my mid 60s and so happy I have her. She's my walking buddy too. Go for it!
You provide me with a much appreciated break from urban life, love to see how you work with your dogs, doing important work that I think is underappreciated in our modern world - a truly existential pleasure, many heartfelt thanks!
My great grandfather had sheep and the border collies up in the Highlands (Tain) - oh, I love these dogs, their intelligence and work ethic! Thank you for sharing!
Their eyes in that the thumbnail picture really show intensity and enjoyment. Herding does seem to give border collies maximal enjoyment. And when such a biological propensity is combined with a good and fair-minded pack leader, it's difficult to imagine a more happy dog.
Finally a video that just makes you feel good watching it. The dogs are incredible and obviously living their best lives; purpose, pride, excitement, and an amazing place to run! Your training skills are most impressive.
It is just so brilliant to see dogs doing what they have been bred to do...but also that they LOVE to do. I was once told that collie dogs are so intelligent that they can become depressed if they are not mentally challenged enough...love this channel!!
Absolutely fantastic, some of my favorite videos on UA-cam. I’ve had Rough and Smooth Coated Collies for years and always wanted to work sheep with them but we had horses and chickens, no sheep in the area…so they herded the chickens and they chased off foxes too 🤣🤣🤣 Your dogs are so nicely trained and intuitive, it’s so fun to watch you work them and the scenery…omg, that must be what heaven looks like !
I often cry, laugh and feel calmer after watching this channel. In fact, I have made a vow that if I watch a political video, I then have to watch one of these videos to balance it out. 😂 This is ssooo much healthier for us. Sean and Stacy are living the dream! I am grateful they’re sharing it with us.
I love how you love those babies(dogs) absolutely gorgeous animals. Perfect training and what a wonderful bond you have with your dogs and all your animals. Thank you so much for sharing your world with us
We had a fabulous Old English Sheepdog when we were first married. She would herd ANYTHING that moved that came in numbers of two or more. Btw, she gave us 16 beautiful puppies in the only litter she ever had. And last, when we visited Alaska the sled dogs were equally enthusiastic about hard labor and remarkably intelligent. Love your dogs❤❤❤!
Boarder collies are totally amazing .My Dad had Black Lab Retrievers, which were awesome but these sheep dogs blow my mind. How they just love to do their job. AWESOME !!
This is a master class on working collies. From the start they come off the ATV like they were shot out of a cannon then they get right to work...they never pamic the sheep and they move them so deftly and with such skill it blows my mind. The way they hold them in place at that fence break and at the gates is a thing of beauty. I tip my hat to you sir..those dogs are living there best life and the training you gave them shows through. Well done
Thanks for that! Just a beautiful thing to see. We have a border collie mix that my daughter rescued. Border collies don't like living as house dogs I can assure you, but it's a way better life she has now than with the previous owner who abused her. Every once in a while in her doggie dreams she'll desperately whine, shake, cry. . . I tried to wake her up when she does this, but l learned that it's just better to let her work out her dream, and then assure her that she's a good girl when she wakes up. Some people shouldn't be allowed to come within a mile of a dog! Oh well: Good girl Lena! My grand daughters are going to love your video when they come home.
That's great you rescued her from abuse. Collies also need mental stimulation as they cdn get bored without a job to do. If you can find a place where you can set up an agility course and train her with commands to go round it this will keep her mind busy as well as physical exercise to tire her out. They were bred to work, as you can see from this amazing video. So sad that people buy these Dogs and expect them to be a couch potato. I hope you can give her some of the activities that will keep her physically and mentally healthy. 🙌😻🐾🐾🐾🐾
@@phoenixrising5088 Everything you said was spot on. Absolutely. However, I am this crippled old man who is trying his best, and she is not getting beaten. Oh well. I just hate it when she has her horrible dreams. However, she is still my sweetie pie. She warns me when scary people are coming to the door. . . I agree that it's not the best life for her, but we are now the best of friends. She looks after me and I look after her. She's my friend.
My grandfather gifted me a border collie when I was three years old. He would try to heard the neighbors dairy cows and such. Once pulled me out of an irrigation ditch that I had fallen into when I was 7. Never trained the animal not even a day, but was the most well behaved dog that I have ever had. I'm 66 years old now and still miss him. His name was Caesar.
These beautiful dogs are Gods gift to farmers. They are so intelligent and loyal, not only working hard but they are so loving. I've been blessed to have had three gorgeous collies over my life time.❤❤❤
I got to visit your beautiful country for a month once ,~ the people were warm and kind, the land so fantastic and your history, of course, like no other. This was a wonder to watch. Godspeed to you and your family, Sean. 🏴🐑🐕❤️
I’ve seen Border Collies in dog shows and doing things like catching freebees, but this the first time I’ve seen them actually working. It was truly amazing watching them do what they were bred to do……herd and move live stock. Fantastic!
Yup, the border collie loves their work, herding instinct is second nature to them. A marvellous breed of dog, and truly loveable. They're never happier than when they're running around , full of beans.

Finally a video that just makes you feel good watching it. The dogs are incredible and obviously living their best lives; purpose, pride, excitement, and an amazing place to run! Your training skills are most impressive.
That’s what these extremely smart dogs were born to do! Awesome to see them put through their paces. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🥰🥰
It is just so brilliant to see dogs doing what they have been bred to do...but also that they LOVE to do. I was once told that collie dogs are so intelligent that they can become depressed if they are not mentally challenged enough...love this channel!!
Amazing photography of dogs on the run!
Such an amazing family! Wonderful bond beautifully trained
❤
Absolutely amazing sir, thank you for sharing.
What a great team, so much fun to watch! Thank you!
Why am I crying watching this? Precious dogs so devoted and smart.
What speed and agility they are amazing .Love your channel
What a wonderful, magical life for the dogs and also the sheep herder.
I love how you love those babies(dogs) absolutely gorgeous animals. Perfect training and what a wonderful bond you have with your dogs and all your animals. Thank you so much for sharing your world with us
Love watching this! Amazing dogs you have!
a lot of instinct and a lot of training. The dogs love what they do, and they really listen to Sean The Sheepman.
Boarder collies are totally amazing .My Dad had Black Lab Retrievers, which were awesome
but these sheep dogs blow my mind. How they just love to do their job. AWESOME !!
So interesting to watch. Your dogs are amazing and you handle them well. Loved seeing the dog POV footage.
New subscriber! Lifted my spirits watching Storm and Kate work. They are such intelligent dogs.
Well done
Border collies are my favorite breed of dog. So intelligent and gentle with children! ❤
Amazing dogs ! Very well trained , you can tell they love what they do .
I am just in awe of watching these dogs work! What a treat…many thanks!❤️❤️❤️
Brilliant, my Border Collie “Miss Winnie the Pooch” loves to watch your dogs work! It is beautiful to watch, thanks for sharing. 🐑 🐕🐾❤️
These beautiful dogs are Gods gift to farmers. They are so intelligent and loyal, not only working hard but they are so loving. I've been blessed to have had three gorgeous collies over my life time.❤❤❤
I love the cross-over deployment they use each time the head towards the herd! It's like a dance!
I got to visit your beautiful country for a month once ,~ the people were warm and kind, the land so fantastic and your history, of course, like no other.
This was a wonder to watch.
Godspeed to you and your family, Sean. 🏴🐑🐕❤️
I absolutely love your videos… the bond you have your dogs is beautiful. Thank you❤
Amazing! Never get tired of watching these amazing dogs work. You handle them beautifully.
