    Need a place to park some of that silly head-stuff? Do you like color, collage, and quotes? Art Journaling is a fun, cool, creative way to express and explore.
    I bet you've guessed that Art Journaling is more than just writing stuff in a diary. And it's a lot more than a place to collect and paste pictures of things you like or want to buy some day.
    Did you know you could get lost in a store brimming with arty goodness while trying to figure out what you need to get started with Art Journaling Supplies?
    Art Journaling Supplies in every aisle call your name. (Art Journaling Supplies do talk, you know!) This is where I come to your rescue! I'll show you exactly where to start and what you need. You don't need a ton of Art Journaling Supplies, either, but you gotta have some basic stuff.
    If you know what you need and where to look, it's easy and you'll save money when you know what to choose.
    After I show you about all that, I'll help you find some cool stuff at the grocery store. Did you know that the baby aisle of the grocery store has Art Journaling Supplies? Indeed it does! It's entirely possible that a big box of crayons might call your name in the grocery store, too.

    I really, really appreciate all the information you've given me. I have been collecting bits and pieces of stamps, inks, brushes and old calendars and magazines to get started. I heard your name from Noit Art and I'm so glad I took her advice to check out your channel. This was very informative because it is quite overwhelming when I've watched some people using such a variety of supplies without saying anything about it, or why it was chosen. You took the mystery out of getting started. Thank you.

      Hi Marilyn. Thanks so much for watching this sample video class from HowToGetCreative.com. The best advice I can give you about Art Journaling is just to enjoy it. You don't have to have any special supplies. They are fun to use, but you can definitely do some great pages with one pencil or pen. Noit is wonderful and an endless source of inspiration. It was very kind of her to suggest that you check out my channel. Thanks for watching.

    AWESOME video Barb. I just love the way you have made it simple, but informative for anyone to begin their art work. I am still FAIRLY new in the crafting world and so far, I am doing things with scrapbooking, card-making and journaling. I would love to pursue the world of mix media, but as I am on a extremely tight budget, I need to get my items when I can. Many BLESSINGS and thank you again for providing this video. God Bless, Angela, (from Australia).

    Hey there,
    This class gave me a sense of calmness while waiting hours in the airport for a delayed flight. You did an excellent job breaking up the class in digestible sections that was still heavy with details. I've watched several videos that were good but this class was just like a mother guide breaking down what can be a complex art form. Also, I felt like I could start today by just being open-minded to using things that I have. I think for some of us that use a creative form as our meditation or self expression, it is easy to be discouraged with all the expensive supplies that is normally presented in the art journaling videos. So the stencils suggestions and image collection was just brilliant...brilliant. You are beyond gracious for sharing your time, knowledge and great content. I appreciate it greatly.

    • @BarbOwenDesigns
      @BarbOwenDesigns  8 років тому

      +Danesha Burrows Hi Danesha! I'm so glad that the video class helped pass the time for you! There's nothing quite as frustrating for me as being stuck somewhere without anything to do. Thank you for your kind comments! Art journaling can be as expensive or inexpensive as we want it to be. Supplies can have a strong allure, for sure. Believe me, I own my share, too. ;-) The greatest challenge is to pare it down to just a few things and see what happens. There are no rules other than having a good time. And, if I don't have a good time, I just gesso over the page and start again.

    Thanks for this wonderful overview . It's very helpful. I was secretly collecting these kind of supplies for years & feeling guilty about it...I thought I was losing my mind. I have artist friends who only use professional paints & canvas. They scorn any other kind of supplies that are construed as made for hobby or craft. I really thought I was crazy, until I met the ladies on Utube. And realize, I m not alone. Thank you, Barb Owens .

    Really learned so much and it all also inspired me and made me want to jump up & start gathering stuff. I've done a little thru the years. Like you l was making art journals & mixed media before l was aware of what it was called. I would see beautiful blank books at craft stores or book stores & would buy them just to glue things in, like ticket stubs from a special date with a boy, etc. also paper coasters from restaurants. I was glad to have all this stuff when everybody started art journals, usually thru the internet. When l discovered UA-cam l went to town. The internet has gone a long way to teach us stuff from recipes to craft projects & beyond. Thank you for kinda organizing my thoughts on what l needed to collect. This was a very informative video & l thourally enjoyed. So thanks for the time you put into making this.🖌🌈❤️👍🤗🌺🌸🌼🌻🌹🌷🥀😄

    Barb - thank you, thank you, thank you! Finally somebody has spelled it all out for me. I have watched countless videos about art journaling, but none of them really told me what types of stuff I might need to do it. I love your no-nonsense style. Plus, we're about the same age. I'm sorry, but I'm just a little tired of 20-somethings telling me how hard life is, so they have to journal. Been there, done that, please let me talk to someone who understands where I am NOW! Again, thank you. Loved your video and will look for more from you.

    Hi Barb. This was a wonderful video tutorial on getting started with Art Journaling. I just found you're videos today and they are fantastic. I've just started researching and collecting stuff to start my first art journal, seeing your suggestions I've discovered I already have some form of most of the items you talked about and didn't even realize it. Had to go retrieve the bubble wrap I had put in recycling. LOL. You didn't mention gesso is that a good staple to have? Thanks for all sharing your knowledge with us. You are delightful to watch. Now all I need to do is be brave enough to take the plunge.

      Mary Ann Oosterman Thanks for watching and for your nice comments! I'm always happy to know that someone is ready to start art journaling. You'll find what you like to do. I always incorporate words or quotes. Some people never do that. The best thing I can suggest is to simply start and try different techniques. Gesso is a great primer for pages. I don't always use it, but sometimes I definitely do. I highly recommend it as an art supply, too.

    I just looked up The Mega Hot Stencil Book at Amazon. It costs $55! You got a smoking hot deal on that book. New subscriber. I appreciate all the info. You explain/ teach well. I appreciate that you were prepared and stuck to your topic. I’m a potter and so many of the ideas and supplies used in art journaling can be used very effectively to create texture in clay. Check out the cake decorating section at Joanns. Lots of supplies there too. I carve designs for pottery work in plaster of paris sheets. Once the designs are created I roll clay into the plaster, dry and bisque the stamp. If the stamp ever breaks I can go back to the original plaster “page” and make another stamp.

    Thank you for such a lovely video. I watched it on and off the past few days and enjoyed it a lot. My problem is I am trying to find my creative spirit again to save my creative based business and I keep buying more and more supplies and just can't seem to sit down and start creating. I think the stress of a bad 2015 is giving me artistic writer's block. Thanks again and Happy New Year!

    • @BarbOwenDesigns

      +sweetboo1022 Tough times can certainly be challenging. I find that if I either write or put paint on something without a specific goal, it often unlocks me. Just the act of beginning gets me over that hump, usually. If not, I close the book and do it again another day. The important part, for me, is to keep doing it. Before long I have a journal filled with words or pages filled with art that I can repurpose for something. During one of my most challenging times, I began drawing mandalas. Then, I began coloring them. That was a life changer for me. Hope that gives you some ideas. And, thanks for watching and for your nice comment!

    • @CarolReidCA
      @CarolReidCA 7 років тому +2

      sweetboo1022 I know this post is a year old, but just get a brush right now, a tube of paint and a sheet of paper or a blank journal page. Squirt some paint on the page right this minute! (I know you have a minute, or you wouldn't be reading this). Push some paint around the paper! Now get another color and drip a few more drops on the page!
      Right now! Don't think about making anything, just put some paint on some paper!
      Leave it to dry on you bed & put some pens &/or pencils with it, so when you go to bed, you'll have something to do when you get there, and don't go to sleep until you have doodled all over the page, written out your philosophy on topics of your day, make spirals, or whatever you like to do in your journal (or perhaps get risky & do something you don't like in your journal!)
      Art supplies don't last forever, nor do we! Don't allow the paints to dry in the tubes because you thought you'd save them for later!
      Carpe dium! (Seize the day, do it now!)

    This was a most delightful hour! Informative--Articulate--Straightforward--Felt like sitting with a friend and learning. THANK YOU so much for making it pleasant. Have been through so many videos that are a nightmare because the presenter stumbles, fumbles, "um-m-m's" and "uh-h-h's", rambles, gesticulates constantly, is more interested in preening her newly manicured acrylic nails, the list of nightmarish gaffes goes on and on until I turn it off, in complete disgust. But, Barb! Oh, Barb, the presentation was delightful--pleasant--CALM--professional--not hyper--well-modulated--and I WILL be on the lookout for more of her videos to further my learning. This was a breath of fresh air! I'm delighted. Thanks again.

    Barb: very informative - thanks
    What is the name of the product you showed that are the paint rollers. You stored them in a tin foil container. You attach a handle to them. Where can you buy them to please??

    • @BarbOwenDesigns
      @BarbOwenDesigns  9 років тому

      Sandy Roberts I think you are referring to the We R Memory Keeper Doodle Stampers. They can fit into a handle for easy continuous stamping.

    Basically, to sum up this video, try different products and see what works for you.
    I would suggest starting with the cheaper stuff because it is less intimidating to use and you aren't out a lot of money if you find it doesn't suit your style. It also gives you a chance to grow with your supplies and as you gain confidence you can move on to the more expensive, usually more defined, materials.

    Do you have a good tip to keeping your white ink pens flowing well. Mine tend to dry or freeze up between uses. I have discarded many a pen that still has lots of ink because I can't keep it flowing. :-/ So, any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

      @BarbOwenDesigns  9 років тому

      Patcrochets The age old problem - keeping gel pens flowing. I wish I had the magic answer, but so far the only one I know is to keep using them. If they sit for very long, they tend to stop working. Wish I had a better answer. I think we all have love-hate relationships with them!

    hey barb, thank u so much for this video! it was very informative!i was wondering if you could help me with something. i'm looking for a notebook/ art journal with soft cover in wich i can work with copic markers AND other mediums like paint, collage, ink,... wich journal would you suggest? thx xxx

    • @BarbOwenDesigns
      @BarbOwenDesigns  8 років тому +1

      Copic markers are a little tricky in art journals. They are solvent based and often show through the paper. I think you might have to look for a special marker paper and then create a journal with that paper. I'm not sure that one journal will work for all the mediums you suggested. I most often use a journal created with watercolor paper that I bind myself or a Strathmore Mixed-Media Journals. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching this sample video class. Gail A Ciesielski Yes! Baby wipes are awesome! People I know that don't have kids use them! They are great for around the house & in the car too!
      How would they know we aren't buying them for a grandchild? (I purposely buy the same kind the kids get for their kids, in case we need some for the little one, weather for their labelled use, or for cleaning up after the grand baby's completed his masterpiece in watercolors!
      Guys have an equivalent at the hardware, machining and auto parts stores too! A little different, perhaps, but perhaps not as much as some think!

    Your viewers might not know that anyone can create an art journal with something book-like, and a pencil, pen, or marker. Nothing else is necessary. Drawing, doodling, scribbling are all perfectly o.k. Black and white is perfectly o.k. Leonardo DaVinci used brown ink in his art journals. Color is way cool but it is not required. All these toys are way cool but not required. Sometimes all beginners want is simple, easy, and not intimidating. So this vid is 12 things that are fun and interesting for art journaling.

    Do you bother to add layer of gesso to your pages before you start painting?

    • @BarbOwenDesigns
      @BarbOwenDesigns  9 років тому

      +Peggy Lindenthaler I add gesso sometimes but not every time. It depends on whether I want the chosen art supply to absorb or move around on the page.

    It doesn't look like your stencils are washed off. Is washing of stencils not necessary?

    • @BarbOwenDesigns
      @BarbOwenDesigns  2 роки тому

      Most of the time I prefer to have clean stencils but if I'm in a hurry, I'll stick them back in their storage box. Some people always wash their stencils. Some never wash them. No hard and fast rules to follow.
