This car was the first performance car I ever experienced as a kid. It was pretty much identical to this one. At the time, I had no idea a car was capable of slamming me into the seat the way this car did. The instant torque was so exhilarating it gave me a head ache from banging my head against the seat. I still hold this car on a pedestal in my mind of how a car should accelerate. Ive been chasing the dragon ever since and still have not found it.
My first muscle car was a 97 LT1 and after driving my LS1 there was something about that LT1 it was a fuckin animal. Love my 99 LS1 SLP but man that low end power of the LT wonder. The more you beat on it spinning around 37MPH that transmission wanted more. I went through 4 sets of rear tires in the 5 years owning it.

Personal review. I’ve owned 3 4th gen f-bodies. They handle the road better than you’d think for a muscle car, especially with some mild work like bilsteins, slightly lower springs. Seats desperately need more bolstering. Ive had a set reupholstered but still wish there was more bolstering. T-top is awesome if the sun isn’t directly overhead beating on you. Enjoy the simplicity, ease of maintenance, availability of parts, that LS1 roar.
I wish I had my 2001 Camaro Z/28. Held on to it as long as possible. Started to have too many issues outweighing the value of the car. Light pewter metallic with chrome wheels & t-top. Drove as often as possible with windows down & tops off. Missouri weather was not the best environment for a RWD sports car, but it was so, so , so much fun to drive!
I have a 2002 WS6 with a similar setup and I love it. I still get thumbs up from a lot of car guys because they know about them. It's a shame GM stopped ..because they are that damn good
In 2000, a friend of mine bought the Camaro SS, SLP edition. He wanted to show it off to me after he got it, man you really felt that power as it slammed you back in your seat. Its probably the fastest car I've ever been in. I had recently bought a used 1994 Corvette. SO naturally we had to race. Going down 45 South out of Houston he was able to pass me and slowly walk away. He let me catch up and we raced from side-by-side but this time he fucked up shifting gears and I was able to walk away briefly. But my corvette was certainly not as fast as his Camaro SS. Great memories!
Nice review man. I owned 11 of these (yes, you read that right), from a '93 LT1 Hardtop Trans-Am to a 2002 SOM SS with all the bells and whistles. The 4th gen f-body will forever have a special place in my heart.
I love my 98 Z28 6spd LS1. For a car that is on such an old chassis and not what you would call "the golden era" of American cars... they perform very well even today. It also takes very little to make them quicker than some of the newer muscle cars too mainly because of the relative light weight these cars have. Its an awesome feeling launching one of these with how the rear squats down and the front end raises up... I can tell he really enjoyed that part lol. Oh, side note... the "cup holder #2" as you called it, is more like the only useful cup holder in the damn car lol. Try putting a drink in the center console and shifting... yup, not happening.
I've read that these were originally were meant to have a longer wheelbase, so that's why the overhangs. Liked these when they came out, still do. There will probably never be a retro-modern generation based on this generation, but at least you can see out.
Man, makes me really miss my SLP Z28 =[ Some girl was texting and driving and came into my lane when I was coming up a hill, as soon as I crested she was in my bumper. $120k in hospital bill later I can walk again but no Z28.
I had an Asian teen that hit me on my ZX9R was in a wheel chair for 7 months 18 inch Titanium rod in my femur, no helmet and flew and hit the guard rail with my body and dented it at 50MPH.
I feel ya man. Mine was only 5.5 months but had to relearn to walk. My right leg had a shattered filbula (titanium plate with 10 screws, 9 stayed and one removed), right ankle had two dislocations and one shattered on the way out (two 4 inch nails/wires that came out and 3 screws still in). Girl hit me so hard I went through the seatbelt and the airbag and still slammed my head into the windshield. The driveshaft came out the back and the stock stereo landed in the back seat. Hopefully youre doing ok, I still need to get some muscle back. Going to try to jog again starting next week.
Not much of a fan of Camaro's, but I always did kind of like this body style and this one is about as clean as you're gonna find. And the special package helps obviously. I never heard of that package, gotta be kind of rare. Sounds pretty damn good and I dig it. Super clean!
Back when the 4th Gen came out I had one, 93 Z28. I really liked it, it ran great. Bang for the buck you really can't beat it. They kept getting better as time went by until it ended in 02.
Love the 4th gen Camaros! and all the 6 speed 4t gen Camaros had an option for that Hurst shifter knob and shifter linkage. the stock LS1s or all of them always had 350hp and 350tq.
Had a 93 z28, which was first year of this gen and loved it. My buddy had a 98 ss and he loved his too. They were great performance cars for the era. Actually would love to have a late TA with t-tops as a toy.
I almost bought the doghouse off of a 93-97 because it reminded me of a 3rd gen (3rd gen may be the slowest but they look the best)..Wanted to put ground effects on it from RKSport but they were a lil pricey. lol I miss that car!
just sold my 2001 firebird formula i owned for 12 years and was feeling really sad about it. this review was dead on how these cars really feel and drive. thanks put a smile back on my face. I'm not selling my 98 trans am EVER!
These things were running 12 second quarter mile stock back in the day. and the Z28 which had the same running gear just not the same decklid and hood could be bought for like 23K. I was big on the bay area street racing scene back then as a youngin and these things pretty much ruled and gave a real jolt to the system whenever they would show up. Nice to see one taken care of so well. A lot of these got wrapped around poles by young inexperienced drivers.
Good vid, like the new intro as well. I had a 4th Gen Z28 with the LT1 285HP with 325 lb ft of torque which came at a low 2400 RPM. Car was a lot of fun had its issues was made in Canada. I hated the seats they looked nice were embossed with the 30 anniversary Logo. They had no neck support just not comfortable on any drive over an hour and likely not much whiplash protection. The Pontiac Trans Am had better seats with a proper headrest.
Epiccomedy Not as bad as people make it out to be, but if you love visibility a new camaro might not be your go to. A mustang would be a better option for visibility
Epiccomedy The Camaro is worse. From all three that I own (4th Gen, 5th Gen and Current 6th Gen). I could see more out of the 4th Gen. lucky my 2019 Camaro 2SS has features that helps me out so I can see lol
This and Firebird car are so friggin' fun to drive. Stick is a MUST. I had a few friends in high school who got these cars and I was pretty jealous. Woulda cut my pinky off to get a new one as a teenager.
Lol this guys reaction to a first and second gear pull... reminds me of that oxy clean commercial, but wait little buddy you got 3 more fun gears and a coaster gear while you wait for your nerves to calm down
Wanna talk about space? Including myself.. I once had 6 regular size people and a small small mini fridge in my 98 Camaro for a short distance emergency situation... suspension was so crushed we avoided pebbles on the road, but she got the job done! Love the car
I love my 98 z28.. got it from my best friend for 5k. It's got a t56, ls6 swap, h/c/i, suspension etc. Beautiful with 101k miles. Don't let the miles fool ya its a gem
Haha yeah you have been here for a while if you remember when I used to comment on the doors! People got sick of that so I quit talking about it, but for the record...the doors did feel nice and heavy on this one! lol
Every girl I date they always slam the doors lol! You can close these doors lightly with your pinky seriously! I forgot the weight but each door weighs 40-60 lbs. I had to do a window motor and and whole door is some sort of fiberglass or plastic like material.
I bought a 1998 Camaro SS new when it came out. It was loaded and had the SLP performance package. Owned it for 2 years and then sold it because I took a job that had me commuting long distance. I had a second car for commuting but but the job left me with very little time to enjoy the Camaro. It had less than 4,000 miles on it when I sold it. I regretted letting it go.
JaeDaGoD growing up my neighbor had 2 fitehawks. never thought they were anything special until I got older. he sold both an got a c7 Z06. I think I prefer the twin hawks
These cars are very attainable. Do what I'm doing bro. I'm saving up what I can every week. I have 3 kids at home and 2 car payments. I have a really hard time saving so I'm dumping 10 percent of my pay into 401k and my company is matching me 6 percent. So once I can pull out 5k its on! You can get a ls1 trans am or camaro for 4k and up. Depends on condition and mileage of course. Make it happen! I see plenty on Craigslist in good condition all the time. Also search surrounding areas. Sometimes they listed for 6500 but if you have 5k and they need the cash they will take it. Just make sure you inspect it good. If you dont know how pay an independent mechanic to do so. Also ask the seller for his id to match to title. Also match vin on title to cars. Check body and all fluids. Also have someone rev the car while you look at tailpipe, dont want to see no smoke. The dealz on these are out there so start saving and get you one!
I'm really digging the stock looks of this car. I hate the way most people mod them. I feel the same way about Supras and 300ZX's. There's very few remaining as not that many were sold in the first place. My obtainable dream car is a 1997 Camaro Z28 30th anniversary with houndstooth cloth interior. My preference is manual but I wouldn't turn down an automatic if the cars in good shape
Actually, that hurst shifter does bounce around and respond to throttle. The exhaust has a bracket mounted to tailshaft and gives a bit of vibration constantly. All within a quarter inch or so.
Not sure about the aftermarket Pro 5.0 shifters. The one in this video's car looks to be the "stock" Hurst shifter that came with most 4th Gen SS & T/A models. (The shifter was actually a $325 factory option, but I have rarely heard of one without a Hurst shifter). The one in my 02 T/A would dance just like that all the time and started doing so within a month or two of buying the car. Every one of my buddies that had M6 4th gens had the same thing going with the stock shifter. The thing is with the exhaust attached to the transmission tail-shaft housing after the manifolds with nothing between transmits a lot of engine and exhaust vibration through the shifter, regardless of the specific type. An aftermarket with stiffer centering springs won't jiggle as much but you will still feel a lot of vibration through the shifter unless you ditch the tail-shaft exhaust mounting bracket.
I bought a brand new 1998 SS Camaro 6 speed and never lost a race. Rolled out of the dealer with less than 5 miles on it.I ordered it in like February and didn't get it until August or something, because they were on strike. It sat on a trailer for months. but it was well worth the wait. There were only two of us around my area that had one and I bought mine to rule the streets and it did. Everywhere I went people wanted me to roast the tires or they commented "there's the SS". Those were the cars to have back then.
@subaruwrxfan I had a 98 Z28 Convertible, with no cats and a Flowmaster and all the SLP intake goodies, Lid, Bellows Throttle body, hand held tuner n all!... I smiled everyday, and floored it everyday just to make sure the bitch was with me, and she ALWAYS was. Hated the looks, loved the platform. You should buy one! You will love it!
I have one 2002, but i still want a ss as well to daily drive. Id never daily my TA but id daily a camaro because parts are easy for a camaro not for a TA
I ran around with my two kids in this model Camaro. Even put the car seat in the back when my youngest was a baby. Owned that car 15 years. I still miss her and will buy another after I move.
98-02 4th gens will surprise some newer cars even today off the line, a bolt ons only car with a good tune and suspension will do mid to high 12s all damn day.
The difference between most people here and you is that they're just expressing that they hate it, whereas you actively went on to his comment about how he loves the car and tried to tell him he's wrong. If everyone bought in to the hive mentality about cars no one would ever drive original looking cars.
I absolutely love mine. Grew up with my brother having an 850whl model and always wanted one like it. Got a spitting image of it with 28k all original Miles. Red coupe with black t tops 6 speed. No where near as powerful but it is turbo and I love the thing.
Damn makes me wish I wasn't getting rid of my '02 Camaro with the 3.8. but with another kid comes the need for space so Friday I'll be welcoming an '06 dodge charger R/T

My Favorite Camaro of all time, this and the new 6th gen. Im glad to still have mine. 2000 Black Camaro f41 package with t-tops.
Nice!
Let me become a millionaire, im not buying no 2019 lambo, bently, Ferrari, etc Im buying an 02 Camaro SS, 02 Firehawk TA, 04 GTO.
Just My Opinion I’m with you but instead of the GTO I’ll take an 06 CTS-V, one of the biggest sleeper cars of the era.
I've read that these were originally were meant to have a longer wheelbase, so that's why the overhangs. Liked these when they came out, still do. There will probably never be a retro-modern generation based on this generation, but at least you can see out.
Man, makes me really miss my SLP Z28 =[
Some girl was texting and driving and came into my lane when I was coming up a hill, as soon as I crested she was in my bumper. $120k in hospital bill later I can walk again but no Z28.
Judge_Jon you need a gofundme for a new camaro!
Going to try to jog again starting next week.
hope you two are recovering strongly!
I’m sorry gentleman stay strong. Life can be a real bitch
Matt I love how excited you get about driving this car.
This is my second car, I have fun every time I drive it.
Hell yeah 🤟
Glad to see you reviewing some of these older generation muscle cars.
Love the 4th gen Camaros! and all the 6 speed 4t gen Camaros had an option for that Hurst shifter knob and shifter linkage. the stock LS1s or all of them always had 350hp and 350tq.
his reactions to the accelerations are Classics!
That LS1 sounds SOOOOOOOO GOOOD!!
Makes me crave a C5 or a 4th Gen Camaro even more :)
Ls power 👍
Had a 93 z28, which was first year of this gen and loved it. My buddy had a 98 ss and he loved his too. They were great performance cars for the era. Actually would love to have a late TA with t-tops as a toy.
I used to tell my friends that my 98 Z28 was fast only because Chevy didn't want you to see what the front looks like. LOL!
lynn thacks 😂😂😂😂
lynn thacks that's the one thing I'm not a fan of. The 93-97 front looks better for sure
all day! I thought about putting the 93- 97 front on mine.
Not sure what Chevy was thinking with the front end of this car. The Firebird of the same year looks awesome..
tc16169 yeah the firebird does look better
These things were running 12 second quarter mile stock back in the day. and the Z28 which had the same running gear just not the same decklid and hood could be bought for like 23K. I was big on the bay area street racing scene back then as a youngin and these things pretty much ruled and gave a real jolt to the system whenever they would show up. Nice to see one taken care of so well. A lot of these got wrapped around poles by young inexperienced drivers.
That's true👍
Good vid, like the new intro as well. I had a 4th Gen Z28 with the LT1 285HP with 325 lb ft of torque which came at a low 2400 RPM. Car was a lot of fun had its issues was made in Canada. I hated the seats they looked nice were embossed with the 30 anniversary
Logo. They had no neck support just not comfortable on any drive over an hour and likely not much whiplash protection. The Pontiac Trans Am had better seats with a proper headrest.
i really appreciate these reviews with these older muscle cars than the new cars in general
GM can learn from this Camaro, you can actually SEE OUT OF IT!!!
Are the new ones that bad?
Epiccomedy Not as bad as people make it out to be, but if you love visibility a new camaro might not be your go to. A mustang would be a better option for visibility
@@zachs652 i drove a 2014 mustang and the visibility was pretty good that's why i asked lol
Yes! the autos are boring
I love how flashy, loud cars like this always have some kind of law enforcement decal hoping they won't get a ticket lmao
What you mean?
Thanks for the review. Glad to hear it has an analog feel. I'm 72 so I'm an analog guy. Thanks again.
at least it looks more interesting than the 2000's mustang, not to mention much better handling.
Justin it's Danny this is my other account
Justin Bouche ikr? evryones like "its ugly" bit yet in reality they drive civics n shit
Thats your opinion
Brandon Goodman it's definitely not an opinion that it's faster and has better handling
The second may be but looks is an opinion. Should of been more specific sorry
Im glad you finally made a review of the fourth gen. Great job as always!
Hey Matt!! Thanks for another amazing video!
I love my 98 z28.. got it from my best friend for 5k. It's got a t56, ls6 swap, h/c/i, suspension etc. Beautiful with 101k miles. Don't let the miles fool ya its a gem
Matt--"You just slip it in, and it roars to life"
Me--"hehehe phrasing"
That hatch was indeed versatile. I had a 96 in college and one time fit 30 cases of Bud Light in that hatch with the rear seats folded down!
But are the doors nice and heavy? ;P just kidding I love this channel, been here for years
Haha yeah you have been here for a while if you remember when I used to comment on the doors! People got sick of that so I quit talking about it, but for the record...the doors did feel nice and heavy on this one! lol
mreastonmurphy bruh these doors cracked my phone in half...literally lol
Nope, doors are 90% plastic.
Dimitrios F lol me and you thought the same thing haha 4th Gen doors are just plastic skins with a small amount metal inside them
Every girl I date they always slam the doors lol!
Damn sounded like a nice car
Sounds so gooooddd
I like how you review old cars too. It's interesting.
I want one so bad
Same, but it's really hard to find a stockish low mile one that hasn't been beat to death.
JaeDaGoD growing up my neighbor had 2 fitehawks. never thought they were anything special until I got older. he sold both an got a c7 Z06. I think I prefer the twin hawks
You can pick one up pretty cheap
RS1 same lmao fuxk that sound was NASTY
I want this car bad!!
Usable in a pinch, his favorite phrase when talking about a small back seat.
shifter shouldn't be dancing... needs new bushings in the shifter or a new transmission mount.
Actually, that hurst shifter does bounce around and respond to throttle. The exhaust has a bracket mounted to tailshaft and gives a bit of vibration constantly. All within a quarter inch or so.
Opie G this is an after market 5.0 right?
An aftermarket with stiffer centering springs won't jiggle as much but you will still feel a lot of vibration through the shifter unless you ditch the tail-shaft exhaust mounting bracket.
did an ls swap on my 93Z and upgraded to the newer ls style 6spd console and absolutely love the extra cup holders
I have a 2002 camaro Z28 and it run's 11.90 on mortor I did an HC pack,long tub's, with a 37.3 in the ass.
Pinkie Holschuh man I finally got one after all these years. I was one of the guys that would point them out lol.
@@Texas_Cruiser that's awesome 👍
Needs 4x4 delete.
One of the first mods I did to my F-body. A spring and shock swap.
+Unbearable Pain 2nd for me. I usually start with subframe connectors
Kyle Webre F-body springs are made from linguine.
I've never liked the look of these dumped on the ground. I love the way the SS looks at stock height with those beautiful wheels.
Not a fan of them being too low, personally, mine is only dropped 1.25"
@subaruwrxfan I had a 98 Z28 Convertible, with no cats and a Flowmaster and all the SLP intake goodies, Lid, Bellows Throttle body, hand held tuner n all!... I smiled everyday, and floored it everyday just to make sure the bitch was with me, and she ALWAYS was. Hated the looks, loved the platform. You should buy one! You will love it!
Trans am WS6 was better looking.
Paul Suzio This is true lol
Paul Suzio imagine how sick a 2018 Trans Am could look.
Hell yes i own a navy blue 02 ws6 TA with 27k original miles
I have one 2002. But the camaro will always have a place in my heart i need one. Vert ! 01-02 i need both fbodys
I have one 2002, but i still want a ss as well to daily drive. Id never daily my TA but id daily a camaro because parts are easy for a camaro not for a TA
Finally a positive review of a fourth gen
Catfish
Which is now the trend these days. It was way ahead of its time.
lmao Larry
+Larry That's actually very true. look at Hyundai, Ford, Audi, etc., their cars look like they're trying to gulp a smaller fish.
Yea look at the 2018 mustang it looks just like a catfish minus the feelers.
DODGE = Bathtub on wheels.
Intoxicating: 8:30 Intoxicating: 12:34
"ByePony" licence plate ;)
I ran around with my two kids in this model Camaro. Even put the car seat in the back when my youngest was a baby. Owned that car 15 years. I still miss her and will buy another after I move.
fbody or No body!
98-02 4th gens will surprise some newer cars even today off the line, a bolt ons only car with a good tune and suspension will do mid to high 12s all damn day.
Or some sticky tires!
😂😂😂😂fish tail get it because it looks like a catfish
😭😭
Wilfredo Enamorado just another copied comment. I think these cars are fucken sweet
Wilfredo Enamorado that's wasn't his intention
Wilfredo Enamorado
Catfish huh, smoke another lid
I had an ss convertible when I was 20 in 2000. pulled so much tail with that car on the beach living in San Diego.
This is my second dream car
looks like shit bro
Same here
Andreas, you're everything wrong with the car community.
explain why, because most of the people here are thrashing this gen camaro! its soooo ugly.
The difference between most people here and you is that they're just expressing that they hate it, whereas you actively went on to his comment about how he loves the car and tried to tell him he's wrong. If everyone bought in to the hive mentality about cars no one would ever drive original looking cars.
Best Camaros ever made. The LS1 is a beast and when built is an animal. 20 years old and still kicking ass, Chevy got it right.
ride height Looks ready for off-road
Bill Phillips monstertrucking
It’s been 20 years so I can finally say this is a retro muscle car
can u do a third gen review?
I'd like to if someone offers a nice, well kept one.
subaruwrxfan I know someone with a 12,000 original mile 1992 Camaro, but it has an LS3 swap
One of my child hood favorites!!
you should review a toyota celica
MrGarbageHole that would change my UA-cam life, a gts and manual = watched multiple times
Michael H nice! Was the 3.8 pretty fast?
GunGuyTKD it was OK. Not v8 fast. But fast enough for a few giggles and reliable
Michael H thanks I've always been curious. I'm rebuilding a 97 z28 right now
GunGuyTKD lucky! Tryna find a clean z28 in Cleveland is like tryna find a needle in a hay stack
Michael H good luck 👍 mine was a deal that popped up for 1 grand and came with two engines new magnaflow exhaust and newish z rated tires!
Great review ! I did not realize that camaro of that era were so much fun to drive.
All the drug dealers near me rock these. A couple are donked out
Dalton v Say no to Donk.
the 4th gen trans am was the best looking. the pop up headlights made all the difference!
