As long as people thought he was rich, he could continue to sell his name (even though he had 6 business bankruptcies total and hundreds of millions in personal debt). The most likely reason he won't release his returns isn't because he's got sinister intentions or didn't pay his taxes, but rather so his imaginary 10 billion dollar image that he fronts won't be replaced with a more modest 3 billion. He's made his own fortune based on people's assumptions that he's more successful than he is. He's faked it until he made it, so I guess in that regard he may be similar to the American dream. But our president-elect is no everyman
