    I was surprised you didn't bring your tube kicker out. The original may well have been worn beyond redemption but you've had miracles before.

      This is a low hour monitor. You can tell by the lack of black dust on the CRT and on the inside of the plastic cabinet, and on the HV lead and flyback. The original CRT is not tired from use. It's tired from long term storage. Maybe the CRT is not perfectly sealed, has some gas in it, and that caused cathode poisoning. Definitely would worth a shot with the CRT tester, althogh if it's gassy, it won't last very long. If it's not gassy it might have been woken up just by using it for a few hours.

    I've always had a love for these little monochrome monitors. As a kid, I was always fascinated by the IBM and Siemens POS registers that used them. I recently came across one locally, but the guy wants the classic "eBay" price for it of $250. No thanks! Glad to see the tube swap solved the issue!

    This gave me the idea of swapping out the green CRT in a Compaq portable for the white one. I experience some discomfort if I look at a single actual color for too long. The world can have my share of green and amber screens!

    The original CRT was super clean, no dirty marks inside the plasic cabinet around the high voltage areas, very low hour monitor. The original tube would worth a shot of cathode cleaning with your CRT tester! Maybe it just got tired in the 27 years of storage.

    Interesting video. Thanks for showing how the magnets around the yoke affect the geometry of the image. I have two green monitors which exhibit a distorted image similar to what you showed. Hopefully (and carefully) I'll be able to adjust the magnets and compensate for it.

    Really enjoy all your videos and all the information about each product. If I may just add one little thing I noticed, the ground strap on the old crt had a spring tensioner that could have just been stretched a little to un-hoop it from the mounting tabs and placed on the replacement crt the same way with no need to have to cut/extend/solder the ground wire.

    Adrian: "a quick video about..."
    me: checks length, almost 20 minutes.. thats what most youtubers would call a long video...
    Adrian: "Ok that took longer than I thought"
    Hmm. yes... it always does :-) and that always makes for something interesting to watch, thanks.

    We used those exact monitors on benches with KVM switch boxes in the 90s. You used them to keep an eye on your other machines while you were actively working on one. This was back in the days even before Remote Desktop was added to NT 4 (codename Hydra). I'd almost forgotten about them!

    On a lot of monitors of the monochrome variety the Line output transformers fail and swell up like puddings. Back in the day you could buy thin plastic sheets to stick over your screen to change it to green or amber and anti-glare mesh. Some monitors came with the anti-glare mesh stuck to the screen.

    FCC website says Proview Electronics, maximum resolution 640x480. Has only the one pin for signal, instead of summing RGB. I have seen the rare amber VGA monitors on Ebay, but I don't think I have seen green.

  • @McTroyd

    I've never seen a VGA plug with that many pins missing. Clearly this was meant as a cheap display for some end-user terminal. Could be an interesting hack to average out R+G+B, and send the average down the green pin (either with an adapter, or a custom plug). Then it would at least be fully grayscale.

    Whenever I find that an LED or switch, or something stupidly simple that uses 1/2/3 wires and is soldered in--like that status LED--I reach in my bag of "RC Balance Plug Extension" bag, and grab a connector. I throw these in whenever I buy connectors online, just so I have a steady supply of these incredibly handy connectors whenever I need them.
    Balance wires use a standard plug (JST? I think) and wiring, which makes them super cheap to buy 'extensions' online. I just cut the extension in the middle, and BAM--you have a pre-soldered and crimped male-to-female pigtail set. It is so fast, and so cheap, I don't hesitate these days. The connectors lock in very well, so they won't wiggle loose like those "DuPoop" connectors will, and they are rated for a few amps worth of current... Not that a switch will need that, but it is nice if you have something that is "switched 12v power" you can actually handle the current with these connectors. I actually try and find the non-silicone wires, as I find they are quite annoying to work with. They are also more expensive, so that works out even better. I hope this helps you, because it has saved me oh so much headache and frustration over the years.
    And yes, for the people who want to comment that you can make your own crimping ends and all that--save it. I know.

    You can tell from the way the camera captures that monitor that the original tube used a mix of phosphors. Bright short-persistence blue combined with a dimmer long-persistence amber. That gave you a bright image with low persistence blur, and the amber helped reduce apparent flicker. Very easy on the eyes.

    In my experience, a white screen always narrows compared to a dark screen. I always assumed it had something to do with the beam taking a larger power draw overall which affects the power available to the deflection magnets.

    • @eDoc2020
      @eDoc2020 2 роки тому +1

      That's definitely odd. With an unregulated HV supply the increased beam power pulls down the HV (expanding the image) but only has a tiny effect on the deflection strength. These screens which shrink on a white screen must have _some_ sort of regulation or compensation. More insight might be gained by watching the vertical size to see if it changes differently than the horizontal size.

    • @fluffycritter
      @fluffycritter 2 роки тому +1

      @@eDoc2020 Interesting. It’s also quite possible I’m misremembering; I haven’t used a CRT for any significant amount of time in like 20 years.

    The highlight for me was seeing a trident card, those inexpensive cards with an inexpensive samsung color svga monitor (samsung was a more "afordable" brand in the 90's), enabled me to make my first quality svga setups and enjoy windows and some games in full glory... :-D, too bad trident was not able to transition to the 3d era, they tried blade 3d, but in the end it was beyond their expertise to make something worthwhile at the pricepoint their consumer market was used to, for some time s3 picked up the ball at that segment, but nowadays I dont think there is a discret low cost 3d card anymore, only those embeded into the cpus, but then it compromises your upgrade path when the embeded 3d card will always be inside the cpu, what you can try to do now is get an used 3d card from the last generation, but even those are still very expensive...

      You can typically upgrade integrated graphics with a cart..
      My gaming needs aren't high, and satisfied by a 5 year old middle of the road nvidia cart, and that is already an improvement over integrated graphics.. The later are by now totally fine for desktop use, and usable for some very light gaming.

  • @FightingForceSoulless

    Pretty neat. And yeah, a lot of people have turned to flipping on ebay, which means two things. You probably won't get much info on the items you are about to purchase, because the person selling them would have no idea, what they are actually selling (can go either way, you can either find a bargain of the century of a massive flop), and there's going to be more stuff available, which is great.
    Also, why didn't you try to revive the first tube before swapping, like you've done with some others before?

    Hey Adrian just want to say thanks for the hrs of content. This might be a stupid question, but have you noticed a charge that builds up in shadow mask CRTs tubes like a kind of solar particle collector. To me it seems like an almost missed opportunity here. Tiny CRTs could trickle charge our cellphones or strip hydrogen out of water. What do you have in your experience’s. Ps this is an on going effect.

    I miss just how sharp the text used to be on monochrome CRTs, back in the day. LCD just doesn't look the same. Or maybe it's my eyes that have changed!

    • @eDoc2020
      @eDoc2020 2 роки тому +1

      The anti-aliasing used with modern text renderers means text will never be sharp the same way, even on identical displays. The subpixels on color LCDs also limits apparent sharpness but it's still better than an equivalent color CRT in that regard.

    Watching this with a C64 on the bench. Just swapped out three RAM chips that had turned to fried eggs... still no boot tho. Somethin's pullin the 5v rail flat. I think it's the 6581 SID, sadly, it gets kiiinda warm kiiinda quick, and a multimeter on 2k resistance check shows ~126 ohms across VCC to GND. That's a weak short and therefore a burnt chip, ain't it...?
    If so, I'm not terribly cut up over it -- the other dead C64 I have, I'd honestly rather use as a parts board, somehow each and every one of the eight RAM chips has failed short -- Adrian, you'll love this, none of em are MT chips, they're all... I forget, some other 'M' brand. But the 6581 SID on *that* board is socketed... much easier to pull the dead one, if that's what it is, plunk down a new socket, and transplant the one from that other board, than to wrestle out eight toasted RAM chips, add in *eight* much smaller (and more fiddly) sockets, and plunk in new chips...
    After all, why take the time and sword-slinging to slay the hydra, when you can just stick it in a closet somewhere on its own and borrow a head once in a while when you need one...? ;)

    Not sure if other graphics drivers allow this, but Nvidia control panel will allow custom resolutions lower than 800 x 600. I think I've set my crt's resolution to 640x400 and 640x480 before to play dos games. I found the best way to fix it was to adjust the resolution and frame rate in dosbox I think, was able to get older dos games running perfectly at their proper resolution and 70hz!!

    • @metaleggman18

      That being said, my monitor is a Packard Bell I've had from childhood that can hit SVGA and XGA resolutions (came with our pentium 3.11 machine), so that might be part of why it works so well. I have it hooked up to my 2060 using a monoprice hdmi to vga adapter (that's funny enough actually hooked into the dvi-i port with an adapter since that port was the one left lol).
      Its an awesome set for retro pc gaming since it had that nice, rounded shape, as opposed to the later flat crts. I do have a newer (97? 98?) Sony trinitron my dad got with our old pentium 2 win 95 computer that I really want to get fixed up, but mostly for newer late 90s, early 00s gaming. I've seen the Sony go for a few hundred on eBay, so would be worth getting it looked at; apparently a guy in the south bay still fixes crts.

    Wow, an IBM Wheelwriter system with the integrated monitor and 720Kb external diskette drive is currently en route to me - and the IBM monitor and 4865 drive are reportedly not working. And speaking of small VGA monitors, I recently diagnosed one of IBM 7496 "Executive Workstation" systems (remember the 8-Bit Guy "Paperclip" video?), removing an added cover on the back to find a Sony Trinitron monitor hidden away underneath! It had an incorrectly set video input switch (among other deeper issues with the system) - the system displays video correctly now.
    That video is on my channel - and more content on the 7496 "Executive Workstation" is getting published! I will do videos on the IBM Wheelwriter system when I receive it too. But I may be needing some small monitor official help for things that aren't a simple switch incorrectly set!

    NEVER spray cleaner on the scream, unless you know FOR SURE there is no circuit board under the CRT or the cleaner could drip on it. I had to fix many TV that one would spray cleaner on it back in the day. NEVER spray anything on the CRT if it on or was just on, you could get one heck of a shock. ALL WAY spray the cleaner on the rag first.
