I absolutely agree with you. I don’t do “New Year’s resolutions.” It’s okay to think about what you want to achieve in the year, but a year is a long time, so you’re going to have some bad days or days that don’t go as planned. There’s no need to wait until the next year; you can start working on your goals whenever.
I think focusing on the languages that you’ve already been studying instead of starting new ones is a good idea! This year, I’m working on learning more Spanish. I’m currently at an A2 level, and I would like to get to at least a B2 level this year. Once I’m more advanced with that, I want to study more Japanese and Norwegian.

Hello, Iclal 🥰 I'm happy to see you again on UA-cam. For 2023, I didn't set any goals for my language learning. But in the last couples of months of 2023, I started learning German. In 2024, I want to reach B1 in German and improve my English skills, especially listening. I want to take an English exam in this year as well 🍀

Thank you so much for your video! Well, at the end of 2022 I started to learn German and I was so excited, I'd been really in love with this language for years! Sadly I was a prisoner of my family situation, yeah, shit happens, and I couldn't study, because I was so deeply depressed and emotionally drained. Somehow I started to feel that no matter what, I wanted to give it another try in 2024. However, I still don't have as much time as I would like to study. Sometimes I can barely find an hour. And as I remember, with English I studied 4 hours a day, it makes me sad very often. Languages are my safety blanket, I like to learn, to communicate with people, to learn historical aspects, etc...but as I cannot devote enough time, I feel like I cannot be able to reach a good level. Plus, I'm in my 40s and it's like, do I really have time to reach B2 in German. I know how it sounds, however it is what it is.

Hi! I'm not Iclal but I have experience in language learning.
      1. I would advise focusing on making language learning a habit and stay disciplined rather than hoping to stay motivated in the long run. Motivation is fickle and fluctuates whereas discipline is consistent and builds self-confidence. The more you do it, the easier it gets.
      2. Identify to what degree you want to be able to speak the language. Do you want to be able to start a conversation with a stranger/ survive in a city by yourself/understand complex pieces of academia-related works/describe the things you see and hear/move abroad/read novels in your target language? Depending on your goals you will need to learn different amounts of information (grammar rules, vocabulary, idioms, etc.). No need to waste time on topics and skills that don't interest you. Try to make some significant progress every time you work on the language. You should notice you have learned new things at the end of a study session.
      3. Work more on active skills (speaking and writing), as opposed to passive ones (listening and reading) starting day one. You can try to sum up what you have learned or talked about during your lesson, or practice reading and writing the content of your lesson again. You can also find short videos or audios in your target language and learn them by heart to acquire vocabulary, understand grammatical rules and structures better, practice your pronunciation and learn how to write the words you hear. Maybe start with a dialogue where people introduce themselves, talk about their habits and daily life, what they like and dislike and what they are doing for work/studying. These short dialogues or speeches are often what comes up first during a conversation of a stranger. You'll be able to start talking about a topic straight away, even if you only have an A2 level, and it will help you understand more complex vocabulary and tenses (B1-C1 level) even if you can't elaborate on them later on.
      4. Choose learning materials that you enjoy. Online classes, uni classes, language manuals, podcasts, TikTok... The possibilities are endless. Choose a medium that you enjoy. Consume and translate the content YOU like (music, UA-cam videos, movies, etc.), and make friends (on Tandem for example) that you genuinely enjoy speaking with. Yes language learning can be hard at times, but it shouldn't become the bane of your existence.
I hope the tips are going to help you. Enjoy and take care. God bless you!
