Even land prices fluctuate. Since there are property taxes, you are basically renting the land from the government. Stocks can be volatile but if you invest in solid companies then its like investing in land: its unlikely to go to zero. Sure land prices are generally not as volatile, but depending on what your neighbors do, it can also drop drastically. Volatility is a double edge blade: it can go down quickly but it can also go up quickly. In addition, with the Government actively trying to keep inflation positive, cash is a horrible investment strategy long term: if you want your buying power to maintain you have to invest in something. Stocks have the best history long term for growth. Real estate, so long as its getting rented out, is the next best option. But any leveraged investment is carries a hefty risk and with real estate you own the government annually independent of the returns whereas stocks if there is a loss can be ridden off your taxes.
Land AND stock can be good investments but you have to consider how you're in it. Land is a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG term investment (and you'll still be paying property taxes on it in the meantime). Yeah, you may lose in the short term with stocks, but you need to diversify, anyway. Stocks can be both long- and short-term investments, depending on the stocks. The real problem with investing in the stock market is that it's gambling. There's no product being produced. Your money goes into a bet that later you're going to be able to sell your stocks to someone else for more money than you paid. The money you invest goes to the people who you buy your stocks from. If the stock goes up you sell it and make a profit. But the guy who buys from you doesn't get anything,- just a chance to sell it later at a profit to someone else. If the price goes down and you sell the stocks you lose money. If you sell at a profit and the price goes down later, the guy who buys from you loses. It's a zero sum game. It's gambling! That's all there is to it. Is gambling how God wants us to make money? Say it, Phil "I don't think so!"
