Thanks for this one! I was a huge fan of Italian football at the time and wanted them to win the tournament (since England, my country, wasn't there). Albertini was on fine form here, and had a couple of very good shots, as well as making a good assist for Baggio's second goal. I didn't realise until seeing the highlights again on UA-cam in recent years how early Italy had gone ahead. My memories in the late 90s of the game were that all the goals had come in the second half. From this extended highlights video I can see there were a lot more close chances than I recalled as well. @5:26 Casiraghi was unfortunate to be wrongly judged offside, a very close call to be fair to the linesman. @7:34 poor Conte gets a head clashing with the back of his skull! Accidental by the looks of it, but it must have hurt a lot. It's weird for me to think of this as almost 30 years ago, it was probably the high point of my interest in football which waned at the end of the same decade.
Apparently you also didn’t recall Costacurta’s handball in the penalty area and the obvious penalty for Bulgaria that was not given.
@@mbojilov1 @2:33 What would the rules say for that, red card isn't it? Very deliberate foul on the last man, and I think he used his elbow too. I can't remember when the last man rule came in, but nonetheless Bulgaria were lucky not to go a man down at that point, don't you agree?

И можеха да ни бият и с повече - имаха доста пропуски. А на @5:35, примерно, ясно се вижда, че Казираги не е в засада. Освен това човекът е прав, че някои съдии като нищо биха дали червен картон на Хубчев @2:33.
There was a clear penalty for Bulgaria in the 2nd half, but the refferee clearly was against us.....We deserved to won the match, go to the final and won that World cup.....

If you deserved to win you need to learn to defense. Your defense was lost when Baggio dropped two quick bombs to your net. Better team won, your defense sucked
@@mickeyguide3112 Penalty is a penalty and should've been given. Then as we all saw in the final, Italy sucked at penalties , and the more deserving team would've been playing against Brazil. Just as Romario and Stoichkov promised each other. The injustice won here, not the better team . The referee was French, we cost them the WC qualifying, also FIFA wanted a big names final......
@@DAIMEX94 it's the what if, should have etc. These injusticies happen all the time in football but it definetly wasn't the decisive factor in the match. It's pretty hard to win a match if you let 2 goals in roughly 20 minutes of the game to your net. Where was the defense??
Penalties are always a lottery, it by no means solves anything like the 'more deserving team' won my goodness.

This was a very strong Bulgaria: they had beaten Argentina AND Germany to reach the semi-final against Italy in 1994.
I believe Italy would have walloped Brazil in the final if Baggio hadn't had to play with an injury and if it hadn't been for FIFA insisting on playing the Final at 3 pm in 40°C heat.
Instead, the Italians couldn't get out of second gear and Brazil won on penalties.

Baggio was so unlucky. He went into the tournament carrying an injury, and then picked up another in this game. Factor in the awful playing conditions; it was a miracle he managed to run, let alone produce those magical moments.
Italy did really well. This was in spite of Sacchi's rigid tactics and crazy decision to either play Signori - Serie A's top scorer for several seasons - on the left wing, or not at all. An Italy team using a 4321, with Baggio and the great Zola, playing just in behind Signori could have been both deadly and very entertaining to watch.

The french referee Joël Quiniou handed the match to Italy on a silver platter because Bulgaria eliminated france in the 90th minute at Parc De Princes on November 17 1993.
That is false. The referee gave a penalty for Bulgaria, he did not help Italy at all.

Where is the moment with the obvious handball in the penalty area by Costacurta? Sometime in the second half, as he tried to stop Kostadinov. It was clearly seen by the linesman too but no flag. Go and watch the tape again and re-do your video.

People can say whatever they want, but the truth is, Italy were the best team that year. Unfortunately, the best team does not always win. That said, I’m proud of how Italy played and what Baggio was able to do despite being heavily injured.
Overall it looked a very intense and tough match!

@@kafkick82 Italians got the 1st half, but not the 2nd one. Even the first half was 2:1. A do not see that as a beating. It is very close result and one goal or a penalty can decide the game. I do not understand why people try to dismiss the importance of penalties, and decision to give or not to give, when it can cost you the whole tournament.

I'm actually curious of what would have happened.
Pretty strong match,with too many tackles,good first half for Italy but there were situations with at least one(there were even 2 more) clear penalty for Bulgaria,sadly the referee had his own different reality over the match,prolly cause of the Bulgarian national team defeated France and threw them out of the World Cup....not a fair judging at some important moments in the match...we have to ask ourselves why the most of the bad referee`s decisions were over Kostadinov,two times for penalties,no one knows...btw,one of the most obvious situation for penalty is not on that video here-a clear handball аt the penalty area.....Good Match,though,brought back pretty nice memories
