  • Agustin Barrios also known as Agustin Barrios Mangore or Nitsuga Mangore was a prolific Paraguayan composer of the 20th century. His many works were bought to light by the indefatigable efforts of the iconic classical guitarist John Williams.
    The piece represented here is Danza Paraguaya and it is quite challenging in places especially in when the opening melodic line is reinforced by an inner voice later in the piece after the B section.
    A score and classical guitar tutorial is here: nbnguitar.com/classical-guita...
    Please don't forget to check out my other piece by Barrios - Julia Florida.

    Kia ora koutou. I'm back from South Korea and ready to get into making videos more regularly. Here's a beautiful piece from the Paraguayan master of guitar - Agustin Barrios. Let your fingers fly!

      Well said Bogumil. He and Lauro are right up there. How's Thu Le though? What a guitarist she is! No doubt she'd offer a wonderful (and flawless) interpretation of this piece.

    Barrios, the human. Mangore, the magic made music. This piece of art in and itself represents the beauty of nature, the passion for life and the hope in a better tomorrow!

      Haha same name and similar resemblance - perhaps you two are related! I love Indian classical music. I used to listen to the Indian groups that performed in some of the hotels I worked in when I lived in Dubai, Bahrain, and Oman. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm happy to hear you're enjoying my videos :)

    You picked a hard one to play. it is not so fluent and confident as you normally play, are you learning this one still? Quite a few Barrios pieces I don't play as they are too difficult. Some of his other pieces are more forgiving! (but you know this already!!)

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  5 років тому +1

      I sure did haha. I've learned this confidently and committed it to memory but it's certainly tricky. When the melody repeats later in the piece with the added inner voice things become a real challenge especially with the awkward stretches that happen one after another across several bars. I miffed a couple of bits here and there but overall I'm happy to have done it in a single run without any studio fix ups :) Haha yeah he knew how to make us work that's for sure!

    Where did you find this easier arrangement? Did you just remove some voices? I'm pretty theres a lot of harmonic stuff that makes this piece challenging and I dont see why you did this version

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  5 років тому

      It's Richard Stover's arrangement. I'm thinking you didn't listen all the way through because the additional voices you're mentioning are absent are definitely there when I repeat the opening melodic line. Some arrangements begin with all the harmonies present but this version thickens the timbre when the opening melody is repeated after the B section. I did this because I prefer this version. There's no way this arrangement is 'easier' David.

    You play really good but I feel that you need to hear more traditional song from Paraguay to get a most precise interpretation I am a paraguayan guy and I don't speak ingles really well I hope I said good and you can understand me

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  5 років тому +1

      Thanks Isaac. You're undoubtedly correct. I had listened to a few interpretations of this piece by Berta Rojas, John Williams, and David Russell and I even read a bit about the area but I'll make sure to do more research prior to posting anything from that region again. I guess this means I better travel to Paraguay someday!

      Cdb Cdb Augustin Barrios Mangore was a contemporary of Segovia, definitely not a student. It is rumoured that the two met only once whilst Segovia was on a tour in South America. Apparently Segovia was quite taken with La Catedral - one of Mangore's compositions and promised to play it. Mangore then requested a friend send him a copy so that he might give it to Segovia but apparently there was no chance that the copy could arrive prior to Segovia' departure from South America. Thus it was never played by Segovia in any concerts or recordings. Popular belief is that Segovia tended to avoid music that was composed by the 'competition' and thus he remained restricted to his own transcriptions, works by deceased composers, or works specifically dedicated to him.
      Mangore was a known virtuoso and a master composer well-versed in many styles of composition and his compositions were bought to the world at large by the indefatigable efforts of John Williams during the 1970s.

      @@nbnguitar I'm reading Six Silver Moonbeams, and the book suggests that Segovia and Mangore met in Mexico... just read today, that Segovia said of the encounter "Barrios wanted to destroy himself but couldn't, because he is a genius." And he allegedly left a set of gut strings as a gift (but probably more likely a sort of hint that he didn't approve of Barrios' use of metal strings, which stems from his underprivileged roots)...
      anyway, good job on the interpretation!!!
